China: on the brink of war with the US? An expert explains

This week the country announced it was increasing military spending, and its newly installed foreign minister warned that if the US did not change course soon, there would be conflict.
But China also recently published a 12-point plan for ending the conflict in Ukraine, despite not condemning Russia’s invasion. Ukrainian president Volodmyr Zelenskyy even said he would meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss the plans.
So is this the moment where Beijing asserts itself on the world stage after being locked away during Zero Covid for so long?
In today’s episode, Kiran Moodley speaks to Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at the University of Oxford, about China’s growing frustration with Moscow and the likelihood of a new Cold War.

You do realise other counties shipping cargo enters those ports as well right. The whole purposes of a port is to allow a flow of import and export from A to B.

As someone who has lived under a dictatorship (Argentina), I can say that civil liberties are not disjointed from economic development. Without civil liberties, press freedom, economic freedom (creating your own business) and decent and accessible education for all, there is no oversight of what the government does, corruption thrives, tax money is embezzled, productive businesses get extorted or confiscated, and their is no incentive to be creative. Democracy alone will not stop corruption, you need a population educated in civics and critical thinking (something absent in Argentina now) and a truly diverse and independent media with high journalistic standards (unlike a lot of corporate media who have other financial interests beyond the purely journalistic ones).

The Communist Party in China is neither communist nor a political party in the sense of a western party. The best way to understand the governance of China is to imagine the re-emergence of a non.hereditary-dynasty. The dynasty is in fact the governance of China. This dynasty is endemically efficiency oriented and accepts its responsibility for being the guarantors of the Peace, harmony and well being of the Chinese people. The Communist party sees itself as part of the people. The Party makes sure that the needs of the villagers are safeguarded. When people in any locality complain, it is usually about the local leaders who may or may not be party members. While dissent is discouraged any problem that reaches the regional governments is usually resolved immediately and the party leader for the area may be disciplined. Best practices were used by China before Europe existed as an entity. Being entrepreneurial was and is endemic to Chinese culture. You could say that China used capitalism before the West discovered the term. The SILK ROAD was all about business and trade. Xi´s ONE BELT ONE ROAD INITIATIVE is a re-emergence of the same concept on steroids. China is modern now. Many of its businesspeop´lke and leaders have Western Education. They have experimented with many political systems and are now a work in progress that I call an evolving SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC MERITOCRACY. One of the results of Chinese tradition is the need to have experienced, knowledgeable leaders. If you are not impressed easily you will be impressed by the seasoned leadership of China. One of the reasons for China´s dynastic longevity has been its meritocratic system of leadership. Another characteristic of China´s growth is an endemic view of commerce and hegemony. China is steeped in Confusian/Buddhist culture. It wants to become the center of culture and commerce again. China developed by attracting commerce and trade to its markets. Today China is the worlds largest market. IT DOES NOT NEED TO CONQUER AND STEAL TO GROW AS THE WEST HAS. IT GROWS EXPONENTIALY BY ATRACTING BUSINESS AND TRADE. If the US became a little more educated about Chinese culture the US would discover that China will never be a rival. There is nothing that China wants or needs fronm the US except for fair trade and commerce. If The US wanted to unite with the US in research and development on climate change, poverty eradication, pandemics, the world would be better for it. Space travel could be a joint venture. There is really really no benefit to artificially create problems for China. THERE IS NO REASON FOR CREATING THEATERS FOR WAR!

The expert’s views are non-thought-provoking, unimaginative and filled with bias: 1. On the Taiwan issue. “Taiwan is not a threat to China” he stated, and therefore China ought to tone down it’s military show of force. That’s a rather odd way of framing the situation. Not a single person in China regards Taiwan as a threat. Rather, they regard Taiwan as a long lost kin whom they would love to welcome back into the family with open arms. The crux of the matter is that US is playing its duplicity game, say one thing and do another. While it says it upholds the one-China policy, in complete contradiction to what it says, it’s trying its darnedest to prevent a peaceful unification of China. It continues to sell more weapons to Taiwan and stoke the separatist sentiments in Taiwan at every opportunity. Is China supposed to just shut up and take it? Can you imagine what would happen if China were to sell arms to the native Hawaiian separatist movement? No leadership in China would be able to maintain power if they just sit idle and do nothing about it. Be real. 2. He “marveled” at how deafening the Chinese propaganda machine is in that nobody utters zero-COVID anymore. He’s implying that the leadership is afraid to mention it because it was such a disastrous policy. The truth of the matter is: China was able to avoid millions of unnecessary deaths by this policy. The people are thankful for the government’s cautious and firm actions. One can argue that they could have relaxed the zero-COVID policy a few months earlier. But that’s neither here nor there. No doubt, their economy will roar back in full throttle in short order. To put things in perspective, those hundreds of thousands of people who have died unnecessarily in the US due to COVID, for instance, were lost forever; there is no recovery for them. China has moved on; zero-COVID was necessary but it’s now behind them. 3. Speaking of propaganda, I would assert that it is 10 times worse in the west than in China. We’ve been told Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction; it was a lie. We’ve been told that Putin is evil and invaded Ukraine unprovoked. The fact that NATO had been expanding further and further east since the fall of the soviets and presented a serious security threat to Russia was swept under the rug. The drama and the media circus from a harmless Chinese weather balloon was pathetic, hysteric and absurd. Around the world outside of the west, people were laughing their pants off. In contrary, a serious expose by a Pulitzer award-winning journalist about the bombing of the Nordstream pipelines was shunned by the collective mainstream media. If all this is not clear state directed propaganda, I don’t know what is. 4. China’s one-party system. It is not the number of parties or number of elections that counts. It is the quality, sincerity and effectiveness of the leadership that matters. China’s ruling class possesses those attributes in spades. In contrast, how many Prime Ministers has the UK had in the last 3 years? I lost track. It did diddly squat for the country and the people. The truth is: the whole lot is incompetent, hubris, lacks courage and vision. 5. It’s clear that China is outdoing the collective west in all dimensions. It has a clear vision of a just, harmonious and prosperous world. It is working tirelessly towards achieving that vision in spite of all the roadblocks the west puts up. In the meantime the west is entirely intoxicated by its imperialistic advantages and hegemonic power and cannot see that the rest of the world is moving on and leaving the west behind. The views of the said expert is nothing more than the same old conventional wisdom that serves to perpetuate the hegemonic power of the west, at the same time dismiss and put down China’s effort to pursue a grander vision for the country and the world.

Would people in Europe be willing to send their sons and daughters half way around the World to fight for Taiwan, or some God forsaken islands in the South China sea? Also, would they be willing to put up war time restrictions. I for one cannot imagine people in the West putting up with severe rationing, restrictions on movements, as well as the Government controlling every aspect of their lives? To get an idea how people in the West would react to severe restrictions on their civil liberties, one just has to look at the way they reacted to COVID lock downs. It would be worse if the Government introduced conscription. The subsequent riots would probably bring down the Government. When it comes down to it, most people in the West are not going to sacrifice their comfortable middle class lifestyles for the sake of Taiwan, or anywhere else for that matter.

That is why it is unlikely that the US would actually go to war with China over Taiwan. Don't believe the hype. They do not really care for the Taiwanese people. Not to mention a war with China could actually mean a threat to their safety and we all know how some westerners tend to handle threats to their safety. Not really well. Crumble under the least of pressure. All their wars up until now has never ever been a threat to them. It was other people safety they were threatening so they didn't have to care for the consequences but this one could actually escalate to their own territory so they will take heed and think twice. Especially since Germany their strongest economy is seriously intertwined with China. And most of the European population no longer have skills to make basic goods. So yes it is very much possible that people would ration food and that as a cause of that domestic restrictions might be implemented.

Having lived in China recently, I think he underestimates the megalomania of Xi, his insecurity due to his own economic failures, and his readiness to go to war over Taiwan. Xi is a political dinosaur, who wishes to be remembered in the same terms as Stalin and Mao. His cult of personality has been forced upon the education and media spheres. The speaker is in error if he believes Xi wants to please the middle class. Rather, he views their inevitable thirst for liberty and internationalism as threats and treason. He has attacked the middle class through so called education reform, and many in that class viewed zero covid as a great reset, designed to lower expectatons of what life means under Xi's Great Undertaking. Decadence must be surrendered in order to achieve the Great Rejuvenation. Given his economic failures, attacks on Taiwan and even Japan look like the only safety valve, as stupid as that may seem, economically. However, during his terms, Xi has consistehntly shown that economic considerations are secondary to his own desire to be greater than Mao, indeed, the greatest Emperor ever. I honestly think that China is too smart to go to war. Their economic power relies heavily on exports to the US and Europe - loosing those two giant economies the way Russia just did, wouldn't make sense for them. So I am with this expert: Thankfully China is not the US. They don't project power militarily but economically. They are behind the rise of certain countries in Africa that are doing quite well now and have much more stability. I also really like their peace initiative for the Ukraine war - it's quite clear that China prefers a world without major conflicts since they like doing business with everyone.

I have a small thing about the demographics point: all the predictions around it are based on traditional modes of manpowering a country's economy. But in case you haven't noticed, China is positively obsessed with new technology. While the US is still mumbling about the "electric car war", China is testing out automatic verhicles on a relatively large scale. And China is already lightyears ahead of the west in some aspects of personal fintech (it basically leap-frogged over a couple of stages such as debit cards, credit cards, etc. and went almost straight from a cash-based to to electronic-based consumer economy). I believe the declining birthrate is certainly going to hit China, but not to the extent predicted.

That is why they limited the microchip supply to China. Dutch manufacturers are no longer allowed to deliver machines that can make microchips to China. Part of theTSMC plant is getting transfered to Orlando and so forth. The US thinks they can slow down Chinese tech developments by doing all these things. They want to prevent China from building up their military and tech industry. The US is trying to win time.

​@@loveheals3173 What the discussion leaves out is that China is already experimenting with new types of microchips, made from graphite and the fact that as China is leading the world in 37 out of 44 key technologies, he millions of STEM graduates every year puts her ahead too in innovation and development so with the multiplier effect, I wouldn't be surprised that China already has all the chips she needs now. Taiwan's TSMC isn't that essential. Just look at Huawei for example. US bans Huawei mobile phones and 5G but Huawai did not shrivel up! Instead it has developed 6G and other electronic goods.

Well, Laowhy86 had mentioned at one point fairly recently that even people who have been strictly pro-chinese and chinese nationalists, there's been a sizeable amount of people that have apologized to him for how they've treated him in the past and basically saying they're wrong and a lot of them are scared. It's not uncommon for people to be a pro one side and as soon as they see collapse occurring, they switch sides, or were on that initial side the whole time. Usually you see this kind of behavior with globalists though.

From being the wealthiest to becoming the most prosperous nation in the world is more or less automatic in a capitalist economy. Today China does Capitalism better than any other country in the world. After all, they are the factory of the world. Under these circumstances, China will avoid war like the plague while the west is itching for war as that is the only field in which the west is better today. This led some Americans to believe that they are exceptional and that there are natural laws that ensure their position as the number one nation on earth forever. As such, the US feels justified to use all necessary means to maintain its dominance and will take any steps necessary to prevent any potential rivals from growing too strong. The CIA was involved in covert operations that resulted in mass killings of communists in over 22 countries. More than 500,000 innocent Indonesian civilians disappeared in 1965-1966. To make the world safe for democracy, the US has caused the deaths of tens of millions of people in its conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. China believes that a multipolar world is essential for global development, where every country has the opportunity to realize its full economic potential. This approach emphasizes cooperation between nations rather than competition, to achieve a shared vision of prosperity for all. While the US prioritizes its position as the sole superpower, China advocates for a more inclusive and cooperative approach that allows for the development of all nations. In the last forty-four years, the Chinese military has not used its weapons to kill a single person outside its territory. China will not be lured into war. The US has chronic domestic problems, including a national debt of over $31 trillion, economic inequality, inflation, healthcare, education, racial inequality, infrastructure, housing affordability, homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and gun violence. The country's political leaders are deeply divided and hostile to each other. Both parties have identified China as their "most consequential threat" and the source of their problems. Many believe that China must be weakened before it becomes any stronger. The US is using Taiwan to provoke China into a war and preparing to fight in that manner. The US population is whipped up to see Chinese threats everywhere. A weather balloon is seen as a threat, as is a port crane and even TikTok. Sanction chopsticks, noodles, and cloth sewing machines, they have dual uses. Chopsticks could poke someone's eyes and blind them, noodles could be fed to PLA soldiers, and sewing machines could be used to make military-grade uniforms.

In some ways, it benefits China more by having Taiwan officially part of China but not integrated into China. For one thing, it can be used as a way to rally nationalism and unify the nation with the slogan, "Taiwan is part of China, and if we must invade to accomplish this, we will". By keeping this threat on the table but not following through, gives them the dual benefits of trading with Taiwan and still having the unifying nationalist message at home. Invading Taiwan would not be easy or successful even if the US and Japan didn't get militarily involved, and I think it is almost a guarantee that they would. My bet is that if there is a military conflict (probably not a full-blown war) between the US and China, it will not be because of an invasion of Taiwan, but a miscalculation by China in the South China Sea. Opening fire on a US vessel sailing in international waters, firing on a US aircraft in international airspace, firing on a Philippine patrol boat in Philippine territorial waters, etc. would trigger a military response. All it would take is one super nationalistic Chinese pilot, naval gunner or missile crew member on one of the fortified islands, taking matters into his own hands. Hopefully both sides would quickly defuse the situation, but that is not guaranteed.

Nah. The US will not get involved. They will only funnel weapons to Taiwan. So that China can be weakened because now China is fighting a war with their own people. Chance that the US would get involved is next to zero. Just observe their ways and you can tell they will not go to war with China over Taiwan. The only reason the US would get involved is if China is literally so strong that they can only take it down by actually attacking them. Which they could try but I doubt it. The US never attacks nations that can actually defeat them especially if there is a threat for possible world war. So no the US will not go to war with China over Taiwan. It is very unlikely. They will try to fight China tactically/strategically/economically. That means isolating them, destroying their economy and have them cut ties with their Asean neighbours.
