South China sea is a shallow sea, with many wrecks from over 2000 years of seatrade... lots of discarded nets and fallen cargo containers... alot floating mid water... and that is just the garbage. It also has unexploded sea mines left over from WW2, loads of unexploded bombs dumped by the US from WW2, Vietnam war, and korea war. US subs will have an interesting experience in the South China Sea

What the Soviets learned in the 80s, and what the Chinese will learn this decade, is that building a Navy is much easier than maintaining it. The Soviet naval buildup in the 80s is one of the main contributing factors of the collapse, as it exacerbated the effects of the Brezhnev stagnation. It's just a matter of outlasting them economically.

My sentiments exactly. Make the bad guys spend their monies.....String 'em out. Case in point...When the Chinese sent thousands on suicide attacks during the Korean war? The US Air Force and US Navy decimated them. As well as sea based artillery. Doesn't matter the largeness of a force. What does matter is the massive response of firepower to delete that large force.

One problem you have with US ships is sabotage, like USS Miami (SSN-755) . On 1 March 2012, Miami arrived at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, for a scheduled 20-month Engineered Overhaul (EOH) and system upgrades. On 23 May, a shipyard employee started a fire that spread to crew living, command and control, and torpedo spaces. Repairs were initially estimated to require three years and $450 million, an estimate later revised to a range of $450 million to $700 million. Fire gutted USS Bonhomme Richard, one of the worst noncombat warship disasters. Over 50 sailors were treated for heat exhaustion, smoke inhalation & minor injuries. Temperatures exceeded 648 degrees in areas; ship sections melted into molten metal.

As a former merchant mariner, I know that the US's commercial shipping industry has long been I a poor state. Shipyards are HUGE and complicated facilities to build and you can't build ANY ships without shipyards. This had been a known issue for decades. We need to find a way to make our civilian shipping more viable (profitable) and the naval ship building capability will follow as a byproduct.

Name me something in the United States that isn't in poor state. Our bridges need improving, our electrical grid needs improving, our Southern border needs improving, the list goes on. We spent 2.3 trillion dollars in Afghanistan, and now we are possibly looking at a war with China or maybe even Russia, but as for our country it just keeps on falling apart.

Guam, a U.S. territory acquired from Spain after the Spanish-American War, was attacked within hours, not days, after Hawaii was attacked, by the Imperial Japanese forces stationed in Saipan. Guam & Saipan are part of a group of islands called the Mariana Islands. The attack occurred in December 8, 1941. The apparent date difference is due to time zones.

I worked for 5 years in the shipyard that built the LCS. I’m sure there are multiple factors that affect building on time on budget-but one huge problem among the thousands of shipyard employees, was that they didn’t pay us worth a damn! Lower than average wage for trade hands. Treated the hands like crap. I can tell you this much for sure after 20 years in construction-YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR when it comes to the talent building your boats!!!

I think people need to think about the toll of a loss of 2 carriers. Historically when naval ships are sunk very few people make it off. 5,000 people would be gone instantly, from 1 carrier, add that to the other lost ships and people lost in taking islands and repelling an invasion of Twain. Many families lives will be changed forever and they always get forgotten about. I hope cooler heads prevail.

India is investing heavily in its Navy .... We are also upgrading and developing our Navy infrastructure here in the Indian Ocean and also do the regular drills with US and Australian Navies for example the Malabar exercises .... India alone will be able to defend the Indian Ocean and will cut off Chinese excess points if it invades Taiwan in that way the US and its allies will be better be able to focus all their efforts in the South China sea .... Here cooperation is the key ! ....

Knowing 4 languages, extremely Hardy people and they spread a culture of oneness. I don’t have any doubt India will not give up any of their territory. Why is Pakistan part of nato? They literally hate the USA. One Pakistan guy talked to me for 3 hours on how much he hates us and how we favor India more. Well Indians don’t expect anything from us. It’s like a friendship we can never have fully, bc we have loyalty to Pakistan. Go figure.

Stick with Moscow. Russia has been India's dependable friend for a long time. Don't be seduced by the lies of Washington, no matter what they say or promise. India doesn't have to be the dependent of Russia, either. Russia has great military technology but, their industrial base still hasn't recovered from the fall of the USSR. India could offer its vast industrial capacity to make up the difference and also build, under license, Russian stuff for itself. Then modify it for India's unique needs. But, stay with Russia.

They are trained to not self doubt. That’s not a good military tool that jumps from your hand to the sand bc it doubts its efficiency. Now Nimitz is trained in free thinking and strategy. A whole different tool. You are comparing a wrench, to an artificial intelligence program for strategic and logistics. No offense to military it’s just that everybody has their purpose and where it fits into the puzzle.

@Randy And you are wrong as well. The reason we "out tanked " the Germans was that we used our ability to produce thousands of bombers to destroy the factories the Germans needed to build more tanks. My father commanded first a group and then a wing of those Eighth Air Force bombers. They destroyed not only the tank factories, but also the smaller factories that produced such things as ball bearings that were needed as part of the tanks..........and a whole lot of other things.

@President Eden The numbers of ships are not necessarily indicative of their ability to defeat a smaller force. Much depends on the tonnage of the vessels and their purposes. Right now the Chinese navy only has three aircraft carriers, one of which I believe is a pretty much useless old Russian ship. China has a bunch of smaller, relatively light, vessels, destroyers and smaller I believe. I'd have to do a bit of research, but I think one of our largest carriers can carry more planes than all the Chinese carriers combined. I think we have some thirteen or so carriers, although I'm sure some are in shipyards right now for maintenance.

60 Minutes really missed an opportunity to interview retired Army Colonel Douglas MacGregor who has a PhD in international relations who could have given a much deeper evaluation of the current world situation and how the U.S. plays a role in it not just the U.S. Navy's preparedness. I urge anyone to watch at least one of his videos on KZbin. I'm reading one of his books "Margin of Victory" and what he has to say makes a lot of sense.

I was on the USS Detroit when it was towed out of the Philly shipyards in 2000. McHales navy would have laughed at us. It was not seaworthy much less battle ready. Luckily, Seattle stepped up and took our Med cruise. We were unprepared and mechanically unsound. But the new paintjob on it looked great.

I’ve met and had the chance to talk to admirals and upper leaderships in my military career. I can confirm some of them are absolutely menacing on how direct and concise they portray themselves. The current seventh fleet commander gave my helicopter search and rescue detachment a speech / talk while deployed to south china sea. He straight up told us we have one of the most important and exposing jobs. Flying in circles so the jets can take off and land safely. We are the first ones up in the air and the last to land. Man was legitimately appreciative of what we did since we were often overlooked and overshadowed by the jets. Yes we just wait around just in case the worse scenario happens and we have to pull a downed aviator out of the water but I’m glad to this day I have never had to go through our procedures in a real case scenario. That means everyone is being safe and doing their job right!

When I say that it’s hard to understand what both admirals from a civilian side it’s very much understandable from a military background.

Good job 60-minutes, excellent to have Toshihara interviewed, he's most certainly an expert. Next step, start engaging with those outside the navy such as Jerry Hendrix, Bryan McGrath and those in the shipbuilding industry, particularly West Coast ship builders. They all can provide GREAT insight into the obstacles and challenges our Navy faces from an operational, bureaucratic and political standpoint.

I'm glad she brought up the suicide issue with the CNO. While I generally like Adm. Gilday, I think the Navy can and should doing more on this issue. Also, I was a Tico sailor. It concerns me greatly that the mistakes made with the LCS and the ridiculous DDG-1000s have set us back many years. Ticonderoga Class Cruisers are being retired very fast. The only other small boy surface combatant we will have when the last one is gone will be the Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer. They're great. It's just not a very genetically diverse navy. That scares me.

I believe that we need to boost up our homeland defense and spread it out to cover all of our coast lines and especially build defense against any kind of missiles and navy attacks. After that we need to boost up our drone fighter capabilities here in the US while training more fighters pilots and fighter jets. Than we can boost up the navy by changing cargo ships to combat capable ships. While all this is going on we need to encourage Americans to be mission ready in case of land invasion and harden essential infrastructure to make them hard targets against land, air, or sea strikes.
C Dubs
C Dubs 2 ай бұрын
I also think it's not specifically the amount of ships but the quality of these ships and the experience of operating these ships. China might be building carriers but we have 80 years of carrier operations during wartime and peacetime. Its not having the carriers. It's how you can launch planes during combat and rearm and refuel under combat conditions. Plus having years of damage control training and firefighting on carriers. Just ask Japan how that was detrimental to their ships during WW2.
RedHellFire55
RedHellFire55 2 ай бұрын
To be honest same could have been said in world War 2, Japan had much more carrier experience at the time of Pearl harbor, the dismissal of quantity is very much a mistake, a prolonged war will make experience a moot point

Another important thing to note is the US navy is much larger than China in terms of naval tonnage. The US is 7 million tonnes versus under 3 million tonnes for China. This doesn’t equate to firepower or technology but it shows the US operates much larger ships than any other navy in the world. Officially the US navy has 11 aircraft carriers but that number is 19 if you include amphibious assault ships which can launch and recover fixed wing aircraft
Jeb

@RedHellFire55 The US Navy has 485 operating Naval vessels compared to China's 350. China is also forecasted to lose half their population by 2100. They don't have time to get the numbers they need. They're losing to childbirth.

They don't like our presence but presence is not intended to be provocative. It's intended to assure and reassure allies and partners around the world that those sea lanes do remain open because global economy literally floats on seawater."

Speak softly and carry a big stick. Biggest guns or advanced weapons was what mattered the most but now it's who has control of the most advanced computer chips that give them the upper hand. Taiwan is the most valuable asset to the people who are running things. More accurately the TSMC factory there is what gives them the edge. No other facility that makes those wafers is as advanced. Large scale at least because of how hard it is to manufacture them and the cost.

Several points you didn't know: 1.TAIWAN's formal name is 'Republic of China' in its constitution while CHINA's formal name is 'the People's Republic of China(PRC)'. 2.TAIWAN once was the Permanent Five of the UN Security Council before 1972, taking CHINA's place with US's support. 3.TAIWAN took all the gold and wealth of hundreds of CHINESE Emperors in 1949 to fund its economy, leaving the poor majority people starving in the mainland. 4.Both TAIWAN and CHINA called Tainwan a province of CHINA and it had a province leader by election before 2004. So what's the role of US here around China?

This was a really good broadcast!! “The Navy is ready but I will never say ready enough”, kind of says it all. And it is not acceptable that the LCS program is having setbacks because of bad engineering. Lastly, we have to be aware that the Navy is not alone, just as the USA is not alone. USA must continue to conduct and improve across all areas of efforts (Diplomatic, Informational, Military, Economic, Cyber and Space) and not be sabotaged by internal distractions. The world is counting on us.

The other thing I don't seem to hear anyone saying is that we've exported all the manufacturing capability to China. We haven't SEEN that manufacturing based turned toward wartime priorities. This is not a war that we want, and I don't think people have nearly the level of concern for what this would mean that they should. They also have a different social system and their people would be more willing comply with harsher controls as well, imo.
Anthony
Anthony Ай бұрын
Generally, we haven't exported heavy industry to China. Your Toyota was made in Texas and designed in Japan. The millions of cars and trucks we produce every year could become tanks and planes in short order. The bigger issue is tech, where we design it in Silicon Valley, manufacture it in SoCal and allied East Asian nations, but the final product is usually assembled in China. This is an easy fix, but it gives them a chance to steal our designs. The only serious issue is shipyards, the one area where China does have the advantage in heavy industry. They have 19 shipyards, we have 7. One of theirs has a higher capacity than all of ours. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. The other huge advantage we have is an extremely powerful military industrial complex. Companies like Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, and so on have massive war production capacity that could rapidly be expanded if necessary. Just look at how much stuff we built for our time in the Middle East, which technically wasn't even a war.
