Why is Chinese philately complicated? It's because it is very closely tied to the complicated history of China in the 19th and 20th centuries. Watch me try make sense of Imperial China, the Republic of #China, Taiwan and The Peoples Republic of China.

Really excellent episode. I really love Asian stamps. I am collecting stamps with various topics such as a red cross, runnings, bicycles and the most imporatntly - agriculture. And in western stamps, it's rare to see stamps dedicated to agriculture. There are a bit more in eastern Europe and much more in Asia. I find beauty in the fact that Asian countries appreciate much more food and agriculture rather than kings and politicians.
@ExploringStamps
@ExploringStamps 4 жыл бұрын
You know what, I never thought of that. That’s a really interesting perspective, there does seem to be a larger emphasis of agriculture on Asian stamps versus Europe and US. 🤔 definitely keep a look out for the reaping rice stamp for your collection! Thanks for watching 😃

There's nothing like going to bed hungry to make one appreciate agriculture. Certain parts of the world have more people who are hungry, and thus do not take food production for granted. We tend to celebrate those things we are proud of on postage stamps.

Nice intro to a very complicated area of stamp collecting. I was familiar with most of it having collected for 50 years. You could go into more detail covering multiple printings by different printers, provincial overprints, treaty post series (US had one) and (serious money on) covers in the 30's between the Japanese part and the Chinese part. The entire area of collecting is a WOW. But you did the right thing and concentrated on the history illustrated by the stamps. China today contains the worlds most active collecting group of collectors. Prices for their stamps have skyrocketed in recent years.

A very clear and concise explanation about the history of China as a nation and also on its postal development. There are too many people worldwide who have mixed up China with Taiwan stamps, Republic of China with People's Republic of China, China Airlines with Air China etc. I was even a little worried when I started to watch that you may get confused or will confuse others, so I am glad to see that the information is clearly & accurately presented. I think the complicated history does makes China & Taiwan stamps interesting though :)

Just a comment - never give up on finding a treasure. I don't know if you've ever mentioned this stamp, Canada #32 - the large Queen on laid paper. Only three have ever been found and a collector found it with a lot of bulk Canadian stamps he paid a total of $60 for (I think!). It sold for $250 000 at auction, not a bad return. You never know, the next lot of stamps you buy might contain something very rare. Moral of the story? Always fully check every stamp you buy. If that person had not checked that Canadian stamp fully that story may have never happened. The difference in value between Canada #32 (laid paper) and Canada #24 (wove paper) is only is $249 750! And to the untrained eye they look the same. There are many people now who are starting to collect differently, they only collect the different stamp faces totally ignoring watermarks, perforations, paper types, etc. and there is a catalog that caters to this. It is a toned down version of the Stanley Gibbons catalog called (I think) Stamps of the World. It doesn't appeal to people like me who like the minute differences but it is catching on. I know this has nothing to do with Chinese stamps, I just tuned in to what you said about the rare stamp with Taiwan not coloured in.
@ExploringStamps
@ExploringStamps 4 жыл бұрын
Great comment! While it is rare to come across a gem or valuable stamp, it is definitely not impossible. I am always reading about the amazing attic finds, or how someone suddenly paid attention to a stamp in their album or bought a lot with incredible stamp hidden in it. It hasn't happened to me yet, but you never know!!

I got bit by the eBay monster... you know this is gonna be bad. I have my junks and some imperial penny posts but most interesting to me are all the oveprints from the 20s and 30s. I took them to a friend who can read the script and found many of them were Post Office provisionals for use in occupied areas and military units. it wasn't till (I think) the 1960s the communists simplified the characters used in present-day chinese writing. history, geography, linguistics all on one little piece of paper.

Why is it worth more when their is a mistake on it?
@ExploringStamps
@ExploringStamps 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Wendy, good question. Its mainly about supply and demand. If a mistake is made, and the stamp is quickly pulled from market because of the mistake, there will be very few of them out there. A collector who gets one of the stamps will have a rare stamp that other collectors would want to get their hands on, so the price goes up. It must be rare though, the statue of liberty stamps in the US that accidentally featured the wrong statue (see my episode on it) have millions of them out there.... so they are worth face value regardless of the mistake.
