LEH: What forced China to disengage its troops from the north and south banks of Pangong Tso? What is it that India did right? India’s occupation of strategic heights on the Kailash range was the clincher, says Northern Army Commander Lt Gen YK Joshi. Speaking to StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, Gen Joshi also explained how the disengagement process is being carried out on the ground, the other friction areas and what he thinks is the best way forward.

Have been a big admirer of Nitin for 12-13 yrs. Eagerly waiting for his new book on Late Parrikar. Great work this website is doing. One suggestion: please start a subscription based monthly or bimonthly or half yearly magazine on Defence, Diplomatic & Strategic affairs. It should have a cover story on important India's Defence & Strategic issues. Plus, commentary on India specific & international issues.

@@sourabhgupta4669 1) No. The land that is ours is ours. It still belongs to India. Lt General says that the Chinese used to cross finger 8 and come into our territory but according to the agreement the Chinese cannot cross it now.(The Chinese pulled back) 2) The objective of patrolling is to check if the enemy is encroaching on our land or not, but since the agreement is signed and the PLA has promised that it will not cross finger 8 there is no need to patrol the area. And who said that patrolling is only done of foot? As long as we make sure that the enemy is not crossing into our territory then the objective is achieved. Now we may ensure that by satellite images or drones or whatever. Anyway, that is what is gathered from this. Hope I made this a bit clearer for you.

That’s one aspect nobody is willing to talk about. Probably because speaking against army puts a person in a negative frame. I believe our army is brave. But Kargil , and then this shows that there is definitely a relaxed approach somewhere there. If they were supposed to patrol finger 4 to finger 8, how come one day they found Chinese had built tents and everything there? It just means they hadn’t patrolled there in quite some time. I hope internally they are addressing this.

How did they build this? This wasn't a one night event. We were in a standoff since April 2020, China blocked our patrols, we resolved the issues by having meetings with the COs. Next day, China brought in more troops, then Galwan happened, things escalated quickly, armoured divisions were mobilised by China, we responded too. What I mean is that everything happened gradually, though things picked pace after Galwan,. at that point we were already quite deep into stanoff. Hope you get the picture.

Nitin sir I think you're one of the few people who could have conducted this interview with such a senior army commander. Your knowledge is immense and the brass can sense that. That's why the interviews are good and insightful.

I must say this is the best channel on any thing related strategic and military affairs. Nothing too flashy just to the point honest journalism. Just plain truth. Love the way the respected General answered the questions on should we have vacated the heights we occupied by saying it was done with an objective and when the objective is achieved we cant be greedy and try and resolve the entire boundary issue with it.

Congratulations to Mr Gokhale for the interview with Lt. General Joshi - insightful, topical and of immense value. Delivered in a measured and balanced manner without any sensationalism which seems to be the norm in Indian media. That said there is still much work to be done to ensure that land claimed (not captured) and lands that need to be claimed is kept front in front of mind rather than complacency setting in. A temporary deal exists with the Eastern segment of India still vulnerable.

Excellent interview! thank you for bringing this to all of us. Not only did the PLA move backfire & they had to retreat, but in this process, they acted as a catalyst for India beefing up the infra and IA allocating the right level of manpower & machinery at this critical border area. This kind of focus from govt was pending for decades. I only hope that this episode also results in sustained economic development and govt focus for the people of Ladakh. That will be the best possible outcome for everyone.

At last finally being able to hear from most trustable source. Even I was worried about losing the control we had gained on Kailash Range, but what Joshi sir says, makes sense. All other media channels just keep showing same visuals without talking to actually the person on the ground. When it comes to defense matters, you and your channel is most trustworthy. 🙏🏼
