NEW DELHI: A year after the Galwan clash distrust between India and China has resulted in both sides have increased troop presence along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. That means India needs acclimatized reserves, the financial implications of which may be difficult to sustain over a long period of time, says Lt Gen Rakesh Sharma (Retd), former commander of 14 Corps. Speaking to StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, Gen. Sharma said India needs to revisit doctrines of the past and prepare itself for a new character of war. Arzan Tarapore, South Asia Research Scholar at Stanford University, who joined in the conversation, said China may be better positioned to absorb the financial costs of maintaining an increased military presence along the LAC but India would do well to impose political costs on China.

Sir, our basic flaw is , we don't have long term China or Pakistan policy.. we are inconsistent when it comes to dealing with neighbors.. the party which succeds alters the policy (doctrine) of predessors.. Nehru had different Doctrine, Indira Gandhi had different, in between there was no policy.. now atleast we have some , but never know how much it will last ?

The short term(5 yrs) and long term solution is to involve the private sector in defense manufacturing in a big way. The start has been made but a lot needs to be done to push this sector fast esp in intelligent weapon systems .

Some points that I think are important to consider for geopolitical analysts are : 1) For the average Indian, Galwan is not just a border skirmish, but a betrayal of trust of the highest order. Indians (post - Independence) do not take such things lightly - never have & never will. Many Indian soldiers are killed by Pakistani firing along the LOC every year, but the average Indian hardly gets worked up in the manner that they did after the Galwan incident. I remember in the initial days post Galwan , every news anchor /strategic experts /intellectuals/authors like Chetan Bhagat etc advised against taking a hard stand against China. Even BJP supporters like Rizwan Ahmed etc were saying that China should not be boycotted because obviously, of India's dependency on China in stocking up kirana shops to phone manufacturing companies and everything in between. The assumption was that we will lose against China. It was Indian people who were absolutely indignant by the reaction of the experts and demanding a response against China, that initiated the Modi government to ban Chinese apps etc. So basically, Galwan has made a lot of Indians far more patriotic & engaged than they have ever been, which is a very good thing. A vigilant public is a valuable asset to a democracy. 2) While there is a lot made about China's military strength, viz a viz India, the thing to remember is that it isn't the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog that matters. While India might be the underdog, but it is more than capable of taking the fight to China. Indian strategists should concentrate on China's Achilles heel in all spheres and draw up action plans to target it. 3) For various reasons, the English broadcasters in the West & in India are unwilling to talk up India's achievements as a multi - cultural, multi - ethnic, multi - religious democracy, that has significantly reduced poverty, illiteracy, infant mortality etc, since its independence. In spite of the apparent permanent chaos that is constantly highlighted, the idea of India as a nation, culture and civilisation is fundamentally strong among Indians and is getting stronger because Indian youth are far more open minded and less prejudiced than previous generations. China rules it's population by fear, India does not need to. 4) While defence investment in all sectors is of paramount importance, one should not overrule the power of the rank outsider like The Seeker, the anonymous member of DRASTIC, who has played a key role in unearthing key evidence regarding the possibility of Covid - 19 virus being created in the lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, thereby resulting in Biden asking the secret service to investigate the matter and calling on China to be more transparent. Indians like The Seeker are as powerful in causing China embarrassment and loss of face, as are the Indian soldiers who died fighting in Galwan. Every Indian blogger, cartoonist, commentator who is calling China out is inflicting a cost on China's brand image and every Indian who refuses to buy a Made in China / PRC is hurting its economy. The Indian government needs to be totally clear eyed and be very hard nosed about China. The world has made the mistake of letting China grow too big for its own good & now it poses a threat to its own people and the whole world.

True, those are like weighted tactics in an overall strategy. But we need to remember that they all depend on each other. For example, If no dependency in the Indian gargantuan market, threshold for PLA military actions becomes much lower.

Economic and political warfare against china is a long-lasting campaign with a more permanent solution while militarizing the LAC is a short-term campaign to stop chinese advance on the LAC.

Very informed talk. Galwan a year later has clearly indicated that Chinese are not going to disengage and hence expect no deescalation of tension along the LAC, infact we have to be extra vigilant not to be surprised and instead be ready to incur a heavy cost on China for any attempted misadventure. Teach China a Lesson by showing that every Indian is a Soldier.

Ideally it should be politico-economic sanctions. But whatever the costs proposed, there must be consistency of approach. Given the mindsets of India's self-seeking champions of democracy, some of whom have even signed secret accords with the Chinese, doubt whether we will be able to make much progress. Unless we have a thorough purge within the country, wherein anti-national/pro-enemy actors are weeded out completely from the polity, and rendered completely neutralised. Until then all other efforts will fall flat on their face

This Govt has an entirely different Strategy. The Geoploliticiens line of thinking is different. Increasing the defence budget will not help to win a war. In the past, the Islamic invasion came through the passes in the Himalayas. Our rulers neglected Passes and this was continued till 1962. The Indian rulers had enough opportunities to safeguard the Passes after the invasion of Alexander the Great. Now the Chinese Army is looking after the passes. Before the Chinese attack, the entire area including the Passes was no man's land. Let the Chinese be there in the inhospitable terrain bringing everything from Tibet crossing the Himalayas using treacherous roads. The Himalayas constitute an imposing crescent-shaped mountain range extending over 2500 km from the south of the Indus Valley beyond Nanga Parbat in the west to Namcha Barwa in the east. The range varies in width from 350 km in the west to 150 km in the east. So the Indian Govt army is not worried about the Chinese presence. Otherwise, the Indian Govt has to deploy troops to guard the Passes. There are 27 Passes in the Himalayas.

Don't have time to watch the video, yet. But, the assertion of the title I disagree with. China's behavior shows there is a disconnect between its military and its diplomats. Imposing political costs for its military adventurism does not give an adequate response to the right people. The military goes unaffected. I agree that political penalties, and trade penalties should be imposed on China. But, that is not enough. IF India does NOT build up its capability on the LAC, then China's military will see India as weak. I do not think they factor political and trade costs in their calculus. India's build up, primarily must be visual. One can build ability that is not very visible, and not visually imposing. Such a build up will not impress China. They are not very bright regarding military factors. You have to parade your might in front of them, like they were children. Otherwise, they will not believe you have power. They are all brainwashed, with stunted minds. Listening, I can tell Indians have nuanced minds with a nuanced view of the world. That is your problem. A nuanced mind has difficulty dealing with and understanding simple minds. That is one reason I have so much trouble with Trump supporters. India's leaders will have trouble with China. (However, the reverse is NOT true. The simple mind has no way to understand the nuanced mind.) That is also why India will easily deal with China. Without hardly lifting a finger, India allowed China to make fools of themselves on the Galway incident. Future events will go the same way, I expect.

What Tarapore says is a political cost is actually economic cost. China doesn't care about political costs but economic costs threaten to unseat the CPC. When we are importing everything from baltis to chappals from China, let alone phones, TVs, computers, we have a lot more room to increase the economic cost while forcing Indian manufactures and the govt to step up, something that both seem to have failed to do for spurious reasons.

@skg901 3 жыл бұрын
@taladuga picpwaspwat no man... May be a small part of Tibet ...yes very long back at times of Kings Kanishka and Vasudeva (not Krishna), Tibet was part of that empire. So was the region currently called as XingYang. They found ancient sanskrit texts in a cave in XingYang region. It is even said that the Tibetians were known as Yakshas in Mahabharata times. However, please understand context. Just before China took over Tibet (with logistical assistance from Calcutta port) Tibet was an still an independant country free from Chinese population. India had just got rid of British colonization but Tibet was a free country for centuries. Also now there are very few Tibetians left in Tibet. China has already relocated and redistributed the Tibetian population within mainland and replaced them with Han Chinese. Tibet is mostly lost to China. However I still feel its possible to recapture important and strategic parts of Tibet and give it back to Tibetians. But China WILL try to recapture it for sure. It'll need a totally new set of planning preparation and huge scale of efforts If Tibet is liberated and given back to Tibetians living in Dharmasala. It sure is posibble but doesn't make financial sense unless Tibet can be opened up to the world as some sort of #1 tourist spot of the world OR the mines are explored and there is sufficient earning from that to atleast maintain enough millitary presence to keep the Chinese out.

I am perceiving turn of things in following way. USA in pak, helps India to take back akshai, get Tibet free, connecting it with cpek which would be jointly controlled by India and pak in their respective territories, to have sea links. Later on Mangoliya and Uighur province in some way will also get access to cpek. Both India and pak will become rich and friendly. Afghan will also be at peace. China will be cut to size. Ultimately peace will prevail over the planet.

Nehru had over-estimated his capabilities and over self confidant. When 1962 debacle happened he was so much hurt the he do didn't last long. He died shortly afterward in 1964. His daughter was bolder but a woman who thinks differently and took to tact and craft which gave her enough courage to play her cards wisely resulting the PAK problems cut by half. After a vacuum, of 12 yrs, Vajpayee restrained himself and got limited success as he wanted to please all parties by tightrope walking. Again a back to pavilion vacuum which Modi has broken with clever diplomacy and measured force. Undoubtedly he is a phenomenon which must be respected, supported and sustained for a great leap forward with caution and strength. All Modi haters are Jealous and selfish with no love for this great country India to which we all belong and indebted. ,

It's very clear, China does not want India to rise and challenge it, because India is the only country that could challenge China economically & militarily in Asia. India should prioritise and work feverishly on decoupling it's economy with that of China To start with India should ban Chinese smartphone manufacturers at th earliest opportunity it gets. The government should encourage Indian smartphone raw materials & semiconductors and new technology battery manufacturers and even subsidise them to be manufactured in India. Indian imports from China should come to zero in five years. Then Indian manufacturers should compete with China in all international markets. These days war is not fought only militarily. Make no mistake about it - India will always be at war with China, one way or the other - economically, diplomatically or militarily - we should be prepared and arm ourselves 'to the teeth' for that

Contrary to the Indian narrative pushed by the media, the video shows Indian troops who are crossing the river and rushing towards the Chinese, who are seen trying to cool the situation.
