many country public transport are public owned. some are great, other are not. it is a little more complicated that that, asian cities tend to have a very dense core without a wide suburban sprawl. this makes public transport accessible and therefore profitable. public transport simply do not work if the city do not have high 'walkability', to which safety plays a big part in it, if people don't feel safe walking to the subway, they will never use the subway. all this is connected, there are a few TED talk that discuss these urban development issue that is worth watching if the issue interest you.

There's gonna be a lot of metro lines in many Chinese top cities. I'm from Chengdu, there plans to be over 40 metro lines with over 2000 km in total by 2050 (not including tram lines, national railway lines, and traveling railway lines); many lines are under construction right now. In terms of kilometers in operation, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu come to the top 4 all over the world, exceeding Moscow, London and New York as well as other international metropolis. Additonally, Chinese metros are very clean as well as pretty well-organized. When I was taking New York metro, it was so dirty and poorly-equipped that I don't wanna take it anymore. The fastest metro line is Beijing Daxing Airport Express, achieving the highest speed of 160 km/h, which is even faster than ordinary trains in some countries.

I was from Chengdu as well, and really think metro in China have leapfrogged many cities. In comparing to other cities though route length alone is not fair. Take New York for example the (only the MTS subway) route length is about 400km bit track length is more than double (1379km total), because many lines are 4 tracks or more to run local/express the same time. Most lines in China are single track with very few exceptions.

I think Beijing subway works great for people who live within the 2nd ring road such as yourselves. But for the great majority of Beijingers, who live outside the 2nd ring road and need to get somewhere also outside the 2nd ring road often on the opposite side of town, the system is terrible. The problem is, there're no fast connections among the various population centers outside of the historical core of the city (Wudaokou, Sanlitun, Wangjing, Tiantongyuan, etc.), and thus subway lines passing through the historical core of the city overcrowd to unsafe levels because everyone has to use them to get anywhere at all. There needs to be a European style commuter rail system that provides fast and high-capacity connections through the city center (e.g. Brussels Midi to Nord, Parisian RER, German S-Bahn, etc.) that bypasses the regular subway lines. Or perhaps the express/local system of NYC subway, whereby you can get from midtown to 125th street in one go on the A train.

Cheaper public transportation encourage mobility and reduce congestions. Congestion equals inefficiency equals lower productivity which will later snowball into capital loss. Also, spending less travel time means you have more time for other things either more productive or even just for resting. So 1+1+1 equals more productivity equals more gain.

One time when I was in Shanghai, i was so angry with them that I had to push half a dozen of them off by force on my way out. Rude, and Weak! 🤣 There are also some people who would cut in the queue when waiting for the next train. I mean, they would just ignore the two lines of people on both sides of the door, and go straight to stand in front of the gate... not only they cut in front of all the people who were there first, but they also block the way for passengers to get off. They are usually the same people who tried to push in before you get off. I am a Shanghainese living oversea most of the time. Do you have channel on China’s platform? These days , I found native English speakers are increasing on China’s platform such as xiguashiping. Will you have your channel there?

China's transport is very fast and convenient today. My home town is in most south west of Sichuan province. I can start journey back to home town at 7:00AM in Beijing and have launch at noon in home. There are two flights to the remote area everyday from Beijing.

People pushing into the subway before you can exit is a pet peeve of mine as well. We once made the mistake of getting on the subway to go to a museum on St Patrick’s day in Boston. 😬 My husband and I trying to push through to exit with our toddler, and had to help and elderly woman and her grandchild get off the train as well; dozens and dozens of drunk early 20 somethings body slamming their way into the trains at noon. A bit scary!

Oh no I bet that was scary. It really irritates me like let me off!

😅I’m Chinese and I felt exactly the same of how irritating it was when people just play whatever so loud in public transport!!!

They seem to be cracking down on it a bit more now so I'm hoping it will get better.

Hey Nico and Jack, Hi from Beijing. I’ve been here for 4 months, so far I’ve used Didi, shared bikes and metro recently. All of these are super convenient, affordable and easy depending on how far you need to go. Didi is really great if you don’t know the city, don’t speak the language and not familiar with subway. Bikes are great too, very cheap, they are everywhere and bike lanes makes it easy and safer to ride. But I wanted to ask you have you tried renting a car with the driver? any advice or where to get it? Thank you

I totally agree! And thanks for sharing your experiences. We haven't rented a car I think you need a Chinese license but we have rented cars with drivers in the past and it is super easy. If you are in any Beijing expat groups on WeChat you can ask in there and I bet people will share some contacts with you of reliable drivers.

what i like abt public transport in china is that it is soooo easy to navigate, esp its wonderful subway systems. unlike in many other places such as tokyo, nyc, and sydney, where navigating public transports is totally nightmare for a beginner

Your hometown should be tyne and wear, right? It is very practical for subway and national railway to use the same track.

Yes the Tyne and wear metro. I live a bit further north but this is the one I'm referring to.
