China's Bicycle sharing WENT INSANE!

Everyone loves China's innovative bike sharing schemes... Well they used to! People still love to ride them, but new companies are flooding the market and the amount of these bikes around the city are insane! They're becoming a problem and are being neglected, left in strange places, vandalised and you won't believe the footage I have of them in this video! Come and see how bike sharing has gone overboard in China!
Mobike (Chinese Simplified: 摩拜单车, Mo-bai bicycle), founded and owned by Beijing Mobike Technology Co., Ltd. (Chinese Simplified: 北京摩拜科技有限公司), is a fully station-less bicycle-sharing system headquartered in Beijing, China. It is the world's largest bicycle operator, and in December 2016, made Shanghai the world's largest bike-share city.
In January 2017, Mobike raised $215 million in Series D funding led by Tencent and Warburg Pincus.
Access to Mobike bicycles is achieved using the purpose-built Mobike application, which requires a pre-paid 299 yuan fee to prevent deliberate damage of Mobike property. Each user is required to register using their mobile number alongside his/her national identification number (Passport identification and verification is also available for non-Chinese citizens). The software automatically disallows users under the age of 14 to use the app, through the identification number.
To use a bicycle, a user presses the black button near the bottom labeled "扫码开锁" (Scan code to unlock), which brings up a QR-code scanning interface, which requires the user to place the QR-code of a bicycle into the scanning area, after which the software will produce a low-toned beep to indicate a success in scanning the code. After a successful scan a progress bar will appear on the screen, indicating the "Progression of unlocking". With a successful unlock, the electronic lock on the bike will produce three short beeps followed by the characteristic "Tuck" sound generated by the lock opening. In the app, the progress bar fills to 100%, and the notice "开锁成功" (Unlock successful) appears for a short period before getting replaced by the rental timing interface. This interface also records the distance traveled, time spent, energy the user spent using the vehicles (in kCals), and an orange banner indicating the number of the bike and the estimated cost of using the bike. The first three stats shown on the interface will be added to the total value on the user page, while the cost will be deducted from the user's account. If several seconds elapse after the bar fills to 98% without starting the trip in the APP, an error will be reported to the user asking them to try again or change to another bicycle.
Availability in deployed cities is high, but reduces as the distance from the city center increases. Many Mobike bicycles can be found at entrances to metro stations. It is currently deployed in dozens of Chinese cities, which includes but are not limited to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Ningbo, Xiamen, Foshan, Zhuhai, Changsha, Hefei, Shantou, Haikou, Deyang, Nanning, Xi'an and Wuhan.

That's true of cmilk, but in the the case of Winston I think it might just be because it makes his narcisstic side feel good to give to a random hobo, be it on or off camera. He overtly admitted to being narcisstic, and so am I. Just my opinion, don't get the pitchforks out.

He's a healthy narcissist; not a bipolar type with an ego fed by the misfortune of others in a zero sum game. He's a healthy executive type, but not a banker finance type only focused on money who usually are sociopath bipolars to be avoided which is often what breaks a fit for a job or such a company culture all too common in America.

Hi Winston. My Chinese wife, currently living with me in the UK, very much enjoyed the tai chi sequences in this vid. As ever, excellent work on the main subject too. We were discussing the notion that if anyone wanted an accurate idea of what life in a Chinese city is actually like before they went to China they would be hard pressed to find a more accurate, or more interesting portrayal, than yours. Keep up the excellent work!

All a matter of education/training and creating the basic conditions for it to fall on fertile soil. E.g. the more scams are considered a common thing in society, the less you can expect people to not be selfish. In case of those share bikes, if people are under the impression that the company providing them is just trying to rip someone off, they would naturally not treat those products with respect.

In my opinion, this is just like a typical growing trend of a new thing. First, it grows quite well because of its innovation.And then as it grows, problems appear and it comes to the bottleneck stage. The next phase depends on how the problems are solved. If practiable solutions and regulations are put into practice, then it will became stable and a formal part of the transportation means. But if fails to solve issues, it just phases out. By the way, I really think our Chinese need to improve our bevariour when it comes to using shared stuff and places.

From a programming perspective it would be quite simple, if you already have the gps co-ordinates, then you just check if the end location is within a designated area. The hard part is defining what is a "designated area". If it's set by the government then maybe they will provide a list designated areas (like the painted white lines), or maybe they'll provide a list of banned areas, which would probably be simpler logistically and programmatically.

Hey Winston, love your channel. Any chance you could do some videos on the different aspects of gaming in China? The trends in mobile, console, PC and genuine vs fakes would all be interesting. I've also heard there's still quite a healthy underground arcade scene in China, there was an article last year about shmup super players. I originally found your channel from one of your gaming vids so more stuff would be cool. I work in mobile games and know that the trends are very different in China compared to not only the rest of the world but the rest of Asia. Either way I appreciate all the work you put in with your channel, I've learned a lot.

I really like these bikes, but here in Singapore everything is a bit more orderly (so much so that they actually _add_ to the aesthetic of the city imo) so I can see why they would be a slight nuisance in countries such as China. Edit: The bikes are actually a Singaporean concept and I think it is very plausible that Singapore might actually be the only place where they would be viable

You dont get the idea of how these mobike company make money. They dont rely on that 1 rmb per hour. Instead every user have to pay 100-200rmb deposit to the company wenn they first time use the app. These deposit can be totally taken back by the user anytime. But as long as user dont take these deposit out, these money is a large amount of working capital for a company. The can use these capital to buy other financial product, for example stock or funds. Thats how they make money.

but these bikes are mass produced and it wouldn't take long to pay off cost of bike. also even if thats not the case. its likely it would be the same thing as investing in planting trees that will take 100 years to reach an age they can be harvested at. yes it will take you 100 years before you can harvest the trees. but the total value of that property rises constantly as the trees grow. so you can buy the property and plant the trees. then sell the property for a profit when they are 1 foot tall. or buy it when they are 10feet tall and sell at 15. so for companies like this. you can make it really big really fast then even if you ignore initial investment or sign up fees if its very popular and widely used the value of company itself explodes with its popularity then you can sell. buuut if stuff like this is common where just shit loads of people pile on because of ether lack of copyright laws or lack of enforcement then potential buyers would likely wait. but who knows. i still think it wouldn't take that long to pay for the bike. and even if its some kind of short term scam the bikes will still be there long after the owners up and run with the money so still good for the people. those piles are insanity though.

Just chill. Germany has such bike sharing programs. Same thing without a docking station. The things work out fine, when the city introduces the bicycle parking spots. The problem is not the bikes, but the lack of designated parking places for them. Same as for cars, when there is no parking spot, then everybody parks as they can.

I made it to the end. Loved the GDS, the fan shots and the extra footage of life in China. Question: Do you film most of your drone shots? This was one of the things that really surprised me at first. I wouldn't have thought that such shots would even be allowed.

I love the bike parking spots. It's like the city planners have no idea about Chinese mentality. They spent time and effort (and money) to set aside a place for bike riders to park their bikes and keep the city tidy, and the Chinese collectively figured "It's easier for me to just drop it wherever, and the mess doesn't directly affect me, so whatever". Rules and regulations like that only work in a civilized country.

Corvalis Oregon had a free share bike program. Locally funded by donations and volunteers. We fixed up donted bikes with donated parts, painted them funky colors, and set them out around the town to be used for free.

I am Linda from China. I would not totally agree with the word "insane" although it is true that in some places, there are piles of bikes being thrown there. Personally, I am a local girl living in Guangzhou and I have to say that shared bikes have made my life so much easier!! My home has 1000 meters from the metro station and I can get to my home in a few minutes by riding bikes. I have filmed how I use bikes daily on my channel and I wanna show people how ordinary Chinese family live in China.

Yes - and imagine if everyone using those bikes switched to a car!! The bikes - and the way they are used is a great idea - and keeps you fit. I wish there was something virtually free like that in my neigbourhood, especially when there is an airshow on or something a few miles away. Your English is better than mine Linda :-) .

Yep it honestly sounds like a great idea! I live 4km from the metro and I would love to have a system like this so that I could just ride bike to the metro station daily instead of taking a bus.

Yeah I got "that far" Winston! No advert today though...I'm trying to remember the first time I saw your video, and it was the video of a man beating (or at least, mistreating a dog). I think you went to local Police station to report his behaviour....and did you not get invited to a wedding by a young man too? I remember the video only had a few hundred views and when I went to look at it again the following day the views had skyrocketed to phenomenal (for me at least) levels. Keep up the good work, Christ you've had me watching your vids for a good few years now so your doing something right! All the best from the UK.

My guess is that China doesn't want any more US military presence in east Asia. Imagine the US if China had military bases in Mexico and in the Caribbean. The US has bases in Okinawa, Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines. Whatever the solution to the problem of North Korea China would not want it to involve an expansion of US military presence in East Asia and understandably so.

Can someone resolve the apparent contradiction between the seeming fact that Chinese people don't care of things that aren't theirs and the fact that they are a 'communist' culture? Is it just the tragedy of the commons writ large or is something else at play here?
@yushuhuan
@yushuhuan 7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Middleton This is an epitome of Tragedy of Commons. Without sense of ownership, people generally do not care the stuff they use. It is human nature and inevitable. Ultimately in an ideal socialism or communism society, the idea of shared onwership is widely accepted in every one's mind, and tragedy of commons will be voluntarily avoided. China has not reached the ideal state yet, it takes time.
@yushuhuan
@yushuhuan 7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Middleton China is not a communism society. Instead, she is a socialism society with some capitalism tweak. If 100% communism, there won't be those shared bike company existing.

This is the result of all communist societies. The commie Western academia tell us it's a good thing because people care for the insides of their houses instead of "mere appearance" of public spaces like shallow capitalists. (I'm not kidding--I heard a professor claim this once.)
