I was there early in the development of the city, was very empty but already the city planning/maintenance was extraordinary relative to Chinese cities. Was surprised to hear recently just how many people moved there recently, but given that Ordos district has the highest gdp per capita on mainland China it makes sense, hopefully it maintains the lower density.

iol. When walking through US and Canadian cities, many stores are closed and vacant as well. Ordos now has a population of more than 150K now as per early 2022 survey. Oh! Ordos will be a totally green focus energy city as well.

All you have to do is visit most of the small towns in the south to realize the state of this country. It's like going back to the 1800's, both in terms of mentality, society, economy, and infrastructure. All of it is decaying.

Erdos is actually the wealthiest city in China. The city heavily depends on energy (and a few other things), so the underlying story is much more interesting and complicated - when energy price is high, the population can easily explode, which probably was the reason for the overbuilding. Not to say this was the only reason, overconfidence and corruption certainly also played major roles, but like many things in China, they were byproducts rather than motivations.

For sure the story is always more complicated than what is presented. It’s interesting even googling ordos today it is still mostly the ghost city info and only a few stories of its turnaround.

@@Eric_Garrison My cousin was there many years ago when the coal price was sky high, many people went there for the money - think San Francisco during the gold rush. Obviously, it did not turn out very well for many people (and developers for that matter). With carbon neutral and global warming being hot issues, I do not see it is ever populated with millions of people as once envisioned. For every Shenzhen rug to rich story there are more than a few failures, but this is probably the most spectacular one.

@@Eric_Garrison The irony is the Wade Shepard, the guy who initially wrote about these developments and basically coined the term "ghost cities" in his 2015 book, continues to visit and report on these cities over the years, and Shepard HIMSELF subsequently wrote about the fact that over time, these cities are filling up, but if you google Ordos, all you get still the original ghost city stuff.

You are always cool, positive and halarious! While recognizing that nothing lasts forever, I'm pretty sure sure those prophets will collapse will collapse first...as for Ordos, it's residents are optimistic enough that they can tough out the ghostness and make it a successful story....good to learn Izzy (not sure I should spell Easy) is reuniting with her love soon😂!
