There is a saying in China: Heaven in the sky , 苏杭 on the ground! Not only about the saying, but also the importance of history and culture . There is a LEIFENG Tower beside the lake, and about a famous lengendary among our Chinese. Thousands years ago , there is a small white snake near the lake, and a child saved it's life, and the small white snake remember in the heart. After eight hundred years practice and don't kill , the white snake become a white dressed beauty in the bottom of the West Lake under the thunder . then She found the child who had saved her life. At this time, the child had become a decent and literate doctor. they become in love . But the world does not allow people and demon to combine. After thousands of catastrophes, they are married and have children. On that day, a monk came and put the White Lady in the Leifeng tower beside the West Lake. His husband also punished himself to became a monk. After eighteen years , their children become a champion in the national exam and the emperor can help him with a desire. He rescued his mother and retrieved his father. Finally, Guanyin Bodhisattva was moved and they were taken to the heavens as gods. I’m not sure Marco Palo’s saying. But there’s an old saying in Chinese that ‘ There is heaven above and there is Suzhou and Hangzhou below’. The heaven here is the place where Chinese gods live, in China’s myth those gods live in the sky, so we said it’s above us. But Suzhou and Hangzhou are as beautiful as the gods’ living place!

Though Shanghai is super size, actually Hangzhou is a very big city even by Chinese standard. The west lake is almost one of the most prestigious tourist attraction in China :)

Hangzhou had a hometown poet (actually he is from the Szechuan province but the Hangzhou people loved him so much because of the work he has done for Hangzhou that they pretty much claim him as their own) called Su Tungpo in the Song dynasty. There is a book written about him by Lin Yutang. Enjoying watching your videos. I am from China and I lived in Hangzhou before I moved to America. Hangzhou is a nice city and has been for thousands of years in its history. I went to the West Lake many times but I didn’t feel it was so beautiful as people said, since it was always crowded and the water was not really clean but a very large number of people around China still went to Hangzhou to visit the lake. Why it’s so famous? I believe it’s not only because of the scenery, if you know the history of Hangzhou you will know why. Since ancient times, Hangzhou has been one of the best cities in China and there were lots of famous poets, writers and artists living there. And many historical stories and legends happened here. In China, tons of historical sites have been destroyed in the past 100 years due to wars, political movements and demolishment/construction. But West Lake has been protected well. You need to avoid weekends and holidays so you will have the mood to feel and touch the history.

The poems that mentioned Hangzhou were made 1000 years ago, when Chinese was the widely used language in east Asia. It made it a dream spot for those who cannot go to China. No doubtably the place has changed hugely to what was desribed in the poems. But the name of the "west lake" remained to be a dream for those who speaks Chinese languages. After all, it is still so very bueatiful even today in my opinion.

Almost everybody knows the saying “there is paradise above，Suzhou and Hangzhou below” in China,which is being said from ancient China.Like other comments mentioned,not only because the West Lake,it’s also about the culture in 江南(The area between Southern Jiangsu and Northern Zhejiang,shanghai is geographically in the middle of it.江南 is well known for its warm climate and rich,scholars and beauties in there.

Hi, the introduction to Hangzhou is quite interesting. But maybe you are not aware of their famous Longjing tea 龍井茶 ? (Green tea). Anyway, since your stay in Shanghai is quite short, maybe a quick idea is to join those package tours. In this way, you don't have to bother about cramping yourself with all those nitty gritty details about the place, etc. And you just need to "piggy back" whatever the tour guide narrates while you vblog. All tour guides in China are qualified and licensed. So say, going to Beijing will be easy, in this case then. Just book a package, normally transportation, all meals and accommodation are included. And Nena could be your good travel companion too. She looks so comfy eating those local snacks. 🤣🤣🤣 Beijing tour package usually includes Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, National Centre for the Performing Arts, National Stadium (Bird's Nest), etc. And of course, the Great Wall of China. Hangzhou is not a small city...you should check more area in Hangzhou but not just some area full of tourist people. The old Hangzhou was indeed a " heaven on earth", but unfortunately, the beauty of Hangzhou was destroyed after Marco Polo's leave by numerous wars.Especially, after the communist party in power since 1949, they demolished a lot of traditional old houses in the city and replaced with ugly Russian style 4-5 storied buildings. And the new-built tall buildings around the west lake just totally ruined the landscape of the lake. Shame.
