Yasheng Huang kickstarted the AGI Public Policy Seminar Series this year with an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of China’s economic and political reforms after 1978, based on his book, The Rise and Fall of the EAST, published in August 2023. Central to his argument was the notion that economic development has emerged as the primary focus of the Chinese state, resulting in a succession of transformative reforms that have facilitated China’s meteoric economic rise over the past several decades.
In recent years, however, Huang observed that the policy emphasis has once again pivoted back to political considerations, which have attenuated the nation’s momentum of growth. Huang believes that China needs deeper institutional reform and more investment in human capital in order to reinvigorate the momentum.

To what extent you can separate the political, from the economc policy. Technologically, or perhaps mechanically, they are both turning on the back of the same wheel, driving the affaires of the State. Otherwise there will be no synchronization between them. Each one of them is pulling or pushing the other in the same time.. And if you stall the wheel at any point, the whole thing will be at stillstand. You cannot just produce or accumulate products and labor in the kitchen without knowing, who they are , and what they are?, what is the menu? Who is going to cook t? Who is going to eat them? For what occasion? For what purpose? And who is going to pay the bill? And what is the overall net benefit of the whole gathering, not only on the stomach, and perhaps on the spirit, but on all the other social, cultural, and values assets as a distinct attribute of a specific society or civilization.
