Travelled up the Yangtze in 1997, whilst the dam was being built, 5 day trip, Shanghai to Chong Ching. Cliffs that could only be transversed by planks fitted into cut square holes in the cliff used by monks, all drowned.Glad we saw it before it disappeared. Beatiful clear streams flowing into the muddy Yangtze, an unforgettable experience.

those planks weren't used by monks they were used by ship/boat pullers in the old days, brave men working for a living pulling cargo ships upstream since the currents are too taxing for rowers, many brave souls died on those trips. The damming of rivers preventing huge floods has always been China's thing, even sun yat sen wanted to build dam to prevent floods.

update; Jan 2022. the part of the Yangtze that goes through Wuhan is completely dry. (probably temporary but still everything living in the river is now dead in that area) There is just sand and the river bottom looks like a desert with bridges sticking up out of it here and there that only last summer (2021) were almost topped by the Yangtze flooding waters. Both the floods and the desertification are said by by both Chinese scientists and scientists from outside China to be another of the destructive outcomes caused by the Three Gorges dam. All fishing on the river has been banned by the CCP and all the fisher people have lost their livelihood. This is a sad tale for such an important and beautiful river. The Dam that was built with such high hopes has proven to have been a disaster.

I think 20000 is the fixed number on site, but the actual number of workers worked there would be much higher, coz not everyone work from the begining to the end, mostly are short term contract workers, however, 1000 is a lot

This video is about ten years old since then there's been a ten year banning on all fishing on the Yangtze River. The paddlefish and Chinese sturgeon and 140 other species are under threat caused from pollution and not implementing fish ladders for migratory species. In 2006 they they installed fish ladders but so far none are using them.

Three Gorges dam is a marvel!! Though there's a great loss of lands, and houses submerged in the water putting the people in a worst situation. The silt which is deposited as a result of the dam is definitely going to cause a great chaos in the future.

The dam is built to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake but what about the surrounding mountains. Since the area has been flooded areas of the mountains that didn’t use to be underwater are now soaked and water has penetrated the base of the mountains making them more vulnerable to giant landslides that would fall into the river creating a giant tsunami.

@@archstanton5973 If the dam is large enough it can affect evaporation levels which in turn effects both temperature and precipitation levels in a localized region. Also, methane is emitted from decaying organic matter trapped in flooded reservoirs....so, yes. It CAN affect the climate. "GROW UP"

China and India are in this sorta limbo were the either try to catch up, sell out or get out in terms of development, India pollutes like thers no tomorrow that their owns holy rivers might as well dry up and China pumps are like it's steampumk london all over again, but good news is that these countries are two of the most self consious about it, as china has been working on many less invasive renewable powers sourses and both India and China plant more trees than anyother country.

I took a cruise on the Yangtze just before they started construction of the dam on one of those bargain cruises. We would pass villages where all the kids would come out when the tourists showed up and we would throw out coins to them to find on the rocky shore. After each meal they would just throw out the trash over board into the river. We saw so much pollution and dead farm animals floating by. My family didn't care tho as long as they had Mah Jong tables on board and instant noodles and tea for the all night sessions,

There will always be "costs" in developments. The question one should ask is, how many lives were lost from flooding caused by the river every year? If all those lives and the resulting economic costs could be averted because of the dam, surely the benefits far exceeds the "costs?" The government can always alleviate the pains and hardships of those who have been displaced. Without any doubt, managing the river will bring much more economic benefits for those regions along the rivers. Is this a propaganda documentary....?

But I wish the film credits were posted or at least that the publisher's notes would post the film's publication/release date The best I can determine is that at 49:38, it mentions the extinction of the Bajii in 'December 2006'. So, this film may be dated to 2007 or soon thereafter.

if there is no dam this year, it will be much like 1998 for China, search the internet, you can find how serious it is. the Dam will slow down the upstream flow, which make a lot of improvement. the example is Wuhan, the flood will become much worst if the upstream water reaches the city at city's own peak.

I'm from the US and could easily see this was an older film with a lot of false assumptions and information. I watch many of the videos about China bc your country has great beauty that needs to be shared and wonderful hard working ppl that I greatly admire. Frankly, I was concerned earlier this year with all the record rain fall and the possibility of serious flooding and loss of life. I was hoping this was a newer video that might be more informative but ... that obviously wasn't the case. Please don't judge all Americans too harshly as many of us abhor what this government has done been doing decades, and is currently doing. However, you are not wrong about the propaganda. Too many ppl here in the US are unaware they are given a steady diet of propaganda via their TV *programming* 24/7/365. Yeah that's what the dam is for to contain and slow down the water so it doesn't rush through it's supply, ever seen the ingenious water ways of machu picchu? And if anyone does that it'll be a war crime ( apparently they actually though of that, the dam can survive a nuclear blats and is not as flimsy as it seems. Hoover dam and the Three gorges dam are gravity dams more like a giant bolder in the way than a wall.

If you had been their engineer the dam wouldn't have been built- all the points you raise should have been seriously thought about but obviously weren't. The hillside cement block "dwellings" they have put the poor people in are built on steep hillsides on unconsolidated rubble in an earthquake zone. Very very bad, very Chinese-don't care attitude.
