In Poland here, there was a different drama with a phone spying system called Pegasus. Essentially politics could listen to practically everyone through their phone speakers. They covered their asses behind "ya know it's just for safety, we need to know if someone is a terrorist or other dangerous individual blah blah blah" stuff.
