I agree 100% with you on short-form media, it's a cancer of the mind. I don't have TikTok or Instagram, but I use KZbin for the medium to long-form content and I dislike that it includes Shorts. After realizing they were an absolute SINK of my time, attention, and ultimately of my life, I removed them from my browser's KZbin using an extension. I can't do the same on my phone, but since I'm a coder, I wrote a script to go through my KZbin history page and remove every single instance where I watched a short. Now on the surface it looks like my account never watched a single short, so I don't get recommended them as aggressively. Whenever they pop up, I ignore them or click on the X "don't recommend shorts for 30 days" or whatever UI bullsh*t option they make available. Avoid short form media, people.
@Christopher_Giustolisi11 ай бұрын
short form media is desiged to waste your time. I too avoid it. Once you get hooked, you just watch another one and another one and you don´t even notice how time passes. That can happen with other things too but short form content usually provides no value, nothing you will remember.
@TerrorSpasm11 ай бұрын
I reccomend using the app stayfree, it an app that monitors your time usage and you can set limits on how much time you use phone and will block out the app after ( you can use pin to turn this off or adapt usage based on what your goals are) but they have an option in their setting to block all shorts. Here's the thing about short term media. They (I don't know who they are, honestly) found that people have now got a shorter attention span, on one subject. So, they found that if people made video's that were only a few minutes, people would watch, but ironically were left wanting more. It's a new phenomenon that sites like KZbin have created. Since each video is only a few minutes long, and it doesn't satisfy your need to watch stupid shit, then you start watching more and more to get that video "high". Hence, you spend more time on it. They then get even more money in add revenue. Think of it this way. When you watch a video that is 50 minutes long, you see what, round 3 or 4 adds. So, with the short form, you watch 2 adds in say, 5 minutes. That works out to the equivalent of 2 times 10 adds in the same amount of time compared to 4 adds in that time. That's 20 adds compared to 4 adds.

Short form content ruining memory rings pretty true. Back in my college days my psychology 101 professor tasked us to target studying for 30 minutes with no single mental distraction that fully removes your attention. Very difficult. He said if you started out at 3 or 4 minutes, that's really damn good. Most couldn't get past 2. Get it to 30 and you can achieve any goal you want. Yeah that wasn't gonna happen to most with how many students even used the book search computer for their social media addiction (which was Facebook at the time).

I hate it even more when someone tells me I have to watch something because they always want to show me some stupid video that piqued their interest but that I have zero interest in. I tend to love reading or understanding tech, science, math, etc. I think social media is destructive. I actually think the internet is too. There are constructive uses, but most people are just using it to feed dopamine and their attention issues. I think the internet has hurt society more than helped and it was planned by the companies of course. Oh well, I am just a tiny tiny spec in the world. Each second that Facebook has, they can influence millions with whatever they want. I can help show my Sister a piece of propaganda, find all the receipts and evidence, but in that time, Facebook has brainwashed another billion. lol

@macD72311 ай бұрын
I do agree, but that product isn't actually addictive like you might think. These things came out years ago, by a different company. It only last a short time because they aren't that good. I'm a cigarette smoker, and I tried them many years ago. I got nothing out of them. All they give you is taste. They might have nicotine in them, but it doesn't go to your lungs. They suck, big time. (forgive the pun). The reason people smoke is to get the nicotine. This is the thing people are addicted to. No one is going to give up their cigarettes or vape for them. It's just a waste of money.
@chrism400811 ай бұрын
The fum ads kinda piss me off too. i quit after 22 years of smoking cigs, and the *only* way i was able to was by vaping. At first i smoked and vaped, but after a couple weeks i couldnt put up with the taste of cigs anymore so i pitched them for good. The difference in addiction between the two is huge to me, i know i can stop vaping with little to no withdrawal effects, at least compared to cigs. I had to smoke every 2 hours, no matter what, or even more than that. With vaping, its more of an afterthought. Im never stopping everything im doing to go and hit my vape, but when i smoked i was outside every 2 hours like clockwork. And if i couldnt get out to smoke i was not a pleasant person. I dont get that with vaping, at all. The fum ads are BS to me because vaping got subverted by tobacco companies and demonized. In many peoples minds vaping is even worse than smokimg, which is complete and utter bs. It can be bad or worse for some people, bit the frequency is incredibly low. Especially compared to cigs. Creators pretend fum is some perfectly healthy and very functional cessation device when its not. If they were more honest and just said i got paid to say this i would be cool. But they act like theyre trying to help, and that they actually care about you. Its gross

A relative worked with a nurse who thought aubergine/eggplant was just a phallic like image. She didn’t know it was a vegetable! How scary is that, a nurse in the UK can’t identify common vegetables. My relative thought she was joking, she wasn’t

Why would somebody from the UK know what all the tropical vegetables are? Y'know, the entire world isn't lardass land, where everything can be cheaply imported from Mexico or Californa.

short term media, reels, tiktok, shorts, facebook posts... they are cancer Its ok to watch 2 hour long movie that won't ruin you like 5mins scrolling, I avoided using facebook for years but i am forced to use it for work and I can see how my time is being wasted, its like you can't control it best to avoid it from the start

1) 4 hours a day is an education certificate in a new career or hobby. You can learn a new language, job ready skill or learn to knit, sew, garden or cook. Wow. 2) Short form can be really fun- but it is literally designed to be like potato chips- pure snacks without any lasting value.

I have never had any social media other than Twitter which I don't use much and I don't watch any shorts on youtube. My time online is some shopping, paying bills and mostly consuming news or long form youtube videos that I can typically learn from in some way. I have never understood the social media obsession and feel like from my outside perspective that I have watched it destroy society. I'm so grateful that I got to live my childhood and up through high school just before the internet era really took off.

on the topic of short term media causing issues I whole heartedly agree. I have been lucky enough to not go down most of the short term media sites but I have gotten stuck in youtube shorts rabbit-holes, and when I do I can feel my attention span shrinking, and become more moody. does not feel good once you actually become aware of it

it seems like that alot of the time for sure, you need a network of like minded inteligent individuals working in a decentralized manor to do anything about it though people who arent running around the net but running it the power is in the digital shackle really at this point in alot of ways sure you could have people placed around you or inserted into your life or cordoned off to areas but physical escape is easy if you really want to. i suggest becoming a party member not the proliterate so to speak if you think there are any free places left anywhere you would be wrong i can promise you that.

Many of the terms are simply weasel words - that is, they can use them in any context and interpret both the word and the context any way if it suits them at the time. if challenged, then you misunderstood the context. Words are given extremely broad meanings as a specific one has limits applied. The vaguer it is, the broader the potential usage of the term. For example, "social order" does not need to have anything to do with social order in any meaningful way. It means whatever they want it to mean the time. Again, as contexts change, they say the issue (whatever it is) is now covered by the term. Same as "weird" or any other term that is coined today.
