The President of Sri Lanka started pushing to build a new port in a small town at the south end of Sri Lanka because ambitious projects like this make you look like a good, caring politician. The only problem was that everyone, including their own government studies estimated that the port wouldn’t be profitable. But then the President announced that the project had been greenlighted - with help from none other than China.
The port opened in 2012, and the forecasts were right - no one was interested in using this new port. And it’s finances were in the hole. So the President went back to China for another loan, this time for $757 million.
So what did they do? They took out another loan from China, this time for $1 billion dollars, to help pay off that upcoming debt payment. It’s safe to say that Sri Lanka found itself at the mercy of the Chinese government. It was drowning in debt payments and was left with an expensive port no one wanted to use. And now, China owns 85% of that port and managed to squeeze 15,000 acres of land around that port as well.
Debt traps, debt diplomacy is nothing new. China is probably just taking a page out of the original master at this game: the US. Why did the US go through all this effort to indebt these Less-Developed Countries, or LDCs? Simple: when you’re a global superpower, you need a lot of resources to stay on top: oil, energy, raw materials, nations under your influence so you can call them up when you need something like votes at the UN, and so on.
Today, China is in a similar position - they’re desperate for energy, money, and resources to continue their astronomical growth to the top.
Who knows in the long run what will happen with China's colonialism. China has the ability to be forceful when needed, especially in their sphere.

I had a professor from Sri Lanka who phrased it very profoundly to the class. He said: colonialism and modern forms of colonialism are like cogs in a system, all relying on other cogs to keep moving. African countries choose China because they have a monopoly on large infrastructure deals. Should other countries compete, it could alter how Africa grows and what debt it accepts. It also should be noted that these countries may actually like China because of this infrastructure deals, seen as a massive caregiver of financial aid. Monsters don't _always_ act like themselves. China may be trying to build something similar to an African NATO, given how much power African countries hold at the UN and its exponential economic growth.
@azbesthu

Also lot of african contries are controlled by their old colonial rulers. They never left completly, foreign companies own the right for using their resources. So, it is not a clear win or loose for the locals if china pushes out those companies. If the local government is corrupt, they will loose in any cases.
@holysword876
@holysword876 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah honestly for now China has a net positive influence in Africa. Lots of westerners cry about China trying to trap African countries in debt, but what has the west been doing for the past century? Obviously China isn't giving it for free and depending on how the projects are managed by the local government (i.e how corrupt the local government is) will most likely dictate how successful that project will be. It's up to the African countries to get their shit together to decide to use this Chinese investment like a weapon, or like a chain.

Infrastructure is important to the growth of countries you guys need it. Make sure you build some factories as well. The West wants to keep you as raw resource producers. China will eventually need a place to sell and make its high end consumer products as Africans continue to make their own. Similar to China and the US relationship where they manufactured phones and cheap good there due to the lower cost in labor. Chinese labor prices are increasing they will eventually outsource. Mr. Tran, I have never seen a video of you criticizing what the Europeans, America, and NATO have been doing to Africa even after the colonization period. Is China emasculating other countries, yes, but so do other countries. But is China actually helping? DEFINITELY. If a country asks for debt to construct something that the country's officials say is not worth it, you can not blame China for that country's ignorance. I was born and raised in Kenya, Africa. The country was colonized by the British, the only thing the brits left of worth is tea and this language am using to have this argument, and am a 7th-day Adventist so I don't even drink tea. Anyway, my point is, the US, & the Europeans are very good at giving handouts (Tax Evasion Charities) but they will never give you something that can actually help a country, ever since china and Kenya started their relationship, today every home has electricity, we have new roads every day. These things as small & insignificant as they seem to you, are really important and are helping folks out here start new businesses and even bring more jobs to the citizens. Is our debt high, YES, so is US and Japan debt, is our debt manageable, very much it's not even 70% of our GDP. Does this mean I love China or its citizens? Very far from it. Their political philosophy is not something I'd want to be associated with & most of them are not exposed. I know your channel focused on everything bad China but I would advise you to look into good things, CHINA DOES NOT GIVE YOU HANDOUTS! IT GIVES YOU A WAY OUT, YOU SQUANDER IT, YOU GET FUCKED!!!

One thing Empires and Monopolies have in common is that they are big, expensive and will breakdown at some point. Economics provides a perfect explanation for this in relation to monopolistic firms; they produce goods at very high marginal and average total costs per unit and will continue to produce as long as there is a demand for them. This is basically what China is doing with these infrastructure projects; seek out a need/demand for a service, produce (and maintain them) at very high marginal costs and average total costs and patent the skills, information for themselves. Such are the hallmarks of a monopoly.

Western countries seem to be very angry that China is doing more in Africa than they ever did in colonial periods. In Francophone countries in West Africa, many countries' currency are still being controlled by the French Central Bank. Stop this "Holier than thou" attitude and consider that while the loans are not good, infrastructure is essential. In all countries in Africa, there has been a steady rise in the economic power of countries. It seems like the US and other Western Nations do not like China because, well they are now one of the most powerful Anti-West nation, and China helping Africa means that there is a chance that African Nations will aline themselves with China. Once African nations are too strong to bully around, then China will have much stronger allies that will stop European and American domination. This scares the West so much that they preach this message of "Debt Trap" all over their media. Americans do not want to help you Africans. Don't listen to their propaganda.

All mortgages are debt traps, but people are desperate to get into them, even it means going through pressure tests for banks to approve the mortgages. Chinese money in Africa are mostly into infrastructures, such as railroads and bridges, even the richest countries in the world would have to prepare for decades to build one. Few infrastructure project makes money! But it turns on the engine for regional development and economical growth. Only a poor mentality see mortgages as debt traps.

For example, Country A wants to build a powerplant, but Country A does not have local companies that can build a powerplant. So, they hire companies who do have the expertise, and usually, they are foreign companies.
