The fact that people were learning to code for a few days and getting jobs in software creation field proves that this was not gonna last... Other countries like the USA were having the same problem, so much demand for programmers they would let pretty much anyone in. That's how you got so many of those "day in my life as a programmer" videos of the said programmer basically doing nothing all day, whiles still earning 200k+ a year. That type of system was bound to crash!

Wow you have it so wrong, programmers aren't about creating connections to propel them into their older years. It's the economy they work with-in that defines them. China doesn't value experience. Another way to put it is that, in the west, your experience is your age and it defines your value. More so China can't innovate in the software stack section. These platforms start with experienced older programmers and develop products that the world uses. There is a clear disconnect, and I am poor at explaining it. But it is there.

'writing a few lines of code' - pfft. Real programmer here , started in 1974 before any 'code generation' tools were available... most average 'programmers' today (the boot camp ones) just fill in templates and throw the code at the CI/CD process, it breaks, they rinse and repeat until it sorta works... very few are computer scientists that know how things work under the covers and hence can really understand how to develop and fix systems. I don't beleive there were ever 700k devs let alone layoffs.

Things are not looking bright in the US also. Lots of big tech companies are laying off people right now especially during the holidays before Christmas. Tech industry is no longer what it used to be. Blue collar jobs here in the US are now very appealing because they remain in demand, has better job security, has a very respectable pay nearimg six figs while others do reach six figs. If I get fired in my tech job, I will learn a trade and be a blue collar worker. Blue collar workers will never go hungry as long as they are not lazy. But the tech sector is just extremely saturated right now and advent of AI is adding salt to injury.

You can't really use AI alone to code. Giving it the correct instructions requires you to actually understand what needs to be coded. Anyone who thinks otherwise will find that for the most part it can probably fix a bug but it can't actually Intuit how to design a feature.

Repairing isn't a new skills. I majored in electronic engineering and did lots of repairs in my early years but a)repair jobs are boring b)don't pay well and c) with modular design, they have been reduced to replacing a module rather than troubleshooting and soldering a pcb , thus easy to do.
