My German grandma and aunts would often tell me stories about how hard life was after the war, how people would eat tree bark and cook soup out of wallpaper for the nutrients in the glue. It created a generation of very frugal people who can't throw food away. You will often see old Germans who do stuff like cut out spots of mold from bread and eat the rest, instead of throwing away the whole loaf or slice and stuff like that. They never developed this kind of grab hag behavior though. They usually are super polite and generous and would never take something that doesn't belong to them. My point being that hunger and deprivation alone do not explain such behavior.

No. But what it explains is that communists eradicated everything spiritual that they could. Whole chinese culture was warped and eroded to just superficial thungs under the communist party. Mao Ce-tung started it, with his 5-years plans, The Great Leap Forward, etc... And why? Because it was a threat to CCP, still is, read something about how they persecute people following Falun Gong and other such practices, because it could allow people unite against CCP and their elite. And that is what CCP fears the most. So the slowly evolving morals and support structures were destroyed, leaving only... this. Pure pragmatism, selfishness and overall no love thy neighbor.

This even happened at my local supermarket in the US. I live in an area with many mainland Chinese immigrants. I'm Taiwanese so I speak mandarin and could recognize the accents of the people involved as mainlanders. My local market was having a 4 for $1 special on Corn and I walked into the market to find to my horror throngs of people fighting over the corn, filling their baskets and shucking it on the spot, and leaving a carpet of corn husks on the floor. Corn. The most abundant crop in the US. I don't get it but it must be some kind of mental illness caused by growing up under Maoism.

Reminds me of when I worked at a homeless shelter. Handing things out like socks, food, toilet paper was a nightmare because there was always someone that would grab an entire family pack and walk away so nobody else could have it. Then you'd go down the street and find the whole pack in the garbage with only one or two pieces taken out. It happened every single time. You can't even understand the thought process of some of these people.

As a farmer if this would be attempted in the US a lot of people would die. Edit: Wow this blew up. Notice that I said that a lot of people would die, not just trespassers/pillagers. Singapore is actually also a dictatorship, but they see further than China. For example, when you are at a table where everyone is grabbing food, you will not grab the food with your hands, but remember the entire scene with your eyes. From the details of this picture you can pretty much analyze some of the strengths and weaknesses of each one and then exploit them. The price is to open a table for them to grab every time. They are happy and you are happier than they are. If there is a fight, China will definitely lose to Singapore.

"For forty centuries they clung with intense determination to the values they saw. Now we see those aims of forty centuries of the world's oldest civilization reap nothing but agony in the success of their persistence." - "Ways that are dark: The Truth About China" by Ralph Townsend (Former US Consul who lived in 1930s China) "Their own records, throwing light on their characteristics back to the remote obscurities of forty centuries ago, force the melancholy conclusion that they were no different then. " - "Ways that are dark: The Truth About China" by Ralph Townsend "To what extent the Chinese at large are what they are because of their inner racial spirit, and to what extent they are so because of long-continued hardships of environment, we cannot accurately measure. The two forces merge indistinguishably, and we can observe only the force of the combination. In the matter of environment, many centuries have passed in China since the average individual there had any significant control over his lot in life. When he emerges to existence, it is not to look upon choices, but to face forward along lines of narrow necessity, along a slim furrow of possible survival kept open by his family ancestors through the thicket of competing humanity. Into this he steps and toils until he dies. There is no escape, no means of reaching a status of relative comfort and security, whatever the effort. Experience teaches him that moderately intensive effort means perhaps enough to keep alive, less means starvation, and more futility. The principle applying to physical endeavors applies likewise to moral endeavors. Moderate goodness keeps him out of jail, a less amount risks penalties, and a greater amount sacrifices needlessly much that the might otherwise enjoy. The Chinese thus becomes the most coolly calculating materialist the world has ever known. He lives skeptically immune to moral enthusiasms, having long ago arrived at an opportune materialism whither some of our own gospel ministers tell us we are now rapidly drifting. Having a severe lack of food when you are a youth really does affect your adult behavior in strange ways. My father grew up poor, and as a result he always hoarded his money, even though he owned several rental homes, and had a good-paying job he would buy all his clothes at yard sales. And also for some reason, he would never buy any food. ( I only lived with my father, my mother lived in a different state.) Consequently, as an adult I have always hoarded food. I can't even explain why I do it. It's just that there's this "need" for me to have my kitchen cabinets and refrigerators always filled to the brim with food. I know I can't eat it all, and I end up throwing quite a bit of it away, or feeding the out-of-date meat products to my dog.

I personally witnessed "grab-hags" while on a tour in china a few years ago. We booked a river cruise going through the city of Shanghai that also included a buffet dinner. There were a few foreigners on this cruise but the majority of the tour group were local chinese. As the waiters and waitresses brought out the food and placed them on the tables all was quiet and everyone sat at their seats. But once the tour guide announced it was time for us to eat, all hell broke loose!😲 We were like, WTF?🤨 The local chinese tourists bolted out of their seats and scrambled to plate as much food as possible before returning to their seats. Being more civilized, of course all the foreign tourists were gobsmacked, bewildered and couldn't believe what we were seeing.🤨 It was like a free-for-all for every man, woman and child! By the time they finished, there was no food left on the tables and we were in disbelief. And so we had to wait until they brought out more food. The tour guide was also disgusted and gave them a mouthful, but we had no idea what she was saying. She was so embarrassed and apologised about their behavior. It is concerning to see how China is unable to battle such critical internal struggles, but have claim to be a global power.

I recently saw a clip of these elderly Chinese woman getting ready to harvest the crop of some medicinal herb, when whatever harvesting machine she had broke down, so she went to grab a bunch of workers to do it manually and when she got back to the field, it was a huge mob of these grab-hags, the farmer just fell to the ground sobbing, it was apparently going to be the equivalent of a 200k crop. At first I thought it must be a hunger pandemic but I guess it's just remnants of Mao's generation being pos. It's a shame because farmers are the backbone of any country, this will just cause farmers to look for other means of employment if they're able to find it, since the alternative is having your crop stolen
@mafiawaffle1386

Mao actively worked against the farmer, since owning land or profiting from nature was seen as a function of greedy capitalism. Look up his orders to kill the sparrows--he convinced an entire generation that they were hungry because sparrows were eating all the grains, when in reality, sparrows were eating the locust. when the locust had no predators, they ate all the crops and it made starvation worse. and who did the people blame, the farmer of course.

This was after Stalin sent about 6,000,000 “Kulaks” to Siberia and thereby gutted Russian grain growing and caused a famine over 10 years (because no one other than the Kulaks knew how to grow as well).

I went to a wedding in Vietnam, which tend to be rather short affairs that happen during the day, a short ceremony, followed by lunch and of course boozing. The food was all laid out on a buffet table, and during the ceremony - before the meal had even started - the countryside cousins all pulled out massive shopping bags and started loading food into them to take home. The bride was understandably mortified and spent her entire wedding going around apologizing to everybody for their behavior.

Greece during WWII was devastated by famine. Almost 700.000 people, or almost 20% of the population at that time, died from hunger. Yet, the generation that survived it aren't grabhags. They are just really, really frugal. They're always telling the younger generations: "My child, don't waste this or that, it's edible, it's your strength". They aren't grabbing anything out of your hands though. In fact, they will feed you if you're in need. Hunger does not excuse subhuman behaviour. Period.

Difference in culture. Western morality doesn't like thieving nor hoarding, because both can mean that you are directly or indirectly forcing someone else to suffer for the sake your own comfort. We find value in self-sacrifice for the sake of others *(Such as giving food away when you have little TO give away.)* because not only is it the "right" thing to do, but because there is a certain level of expectation that comes with it. The expectation that it will come back to you one day if you ever find yourself in need. The CCCP's China has none of these qualities. Social trust is insanely low *(Because the government incentivizes selling peers out.)* , conventional morality is discouraged and they have an entire generation of older people who never grew out of the whiny schoolkid phase of their lives. Of course they're stealing and hoarding, they know they can get away with it and they have no expectation of a social reward for not doing so, meaning from their perspective it would be stupid to NOT steal and stockpile.

Here's a quick story about my experience there. My Chinese wife had just given birth. My son was merely a few weeks old. She took him to an outdoor promotion at some shopping mall where they were selling some kind of beauty product. They started handing out free boxes of tissues to the crowd. Someone jumped up on stage and went for the boxes. Suddenly, the entire crowd rushed the stage. My wife was at the front of the stage and said she was nearly crushed in the chaos and luckily protected my son from harm and got out of there. If I had been there, there would have been a lot of cracked skulls because I don't take that kind of bullshit. These people were the worst part of my experience in China. They were EVERYWHERE. If you let these filthy grab hags anywhere near a buffet, you can say goodbye to all the food. They would pile on their plates, not even eat 20% and leave it all on the tables when they left. You had no chance getting seafood like crab legs in a buffet there it was insane how they acted around anything 'free'.

The people taking the corn from farms aren’t “grab hags.” Lets call them what they are- thieves. They are stealing someone elses hard work. You can be thrown in jail for wearing something the government doesn’t like or for holding up blank pieces of paper. But stealing? Totally ok? It’s crazy. I hate the people that force stores to close here too because they just brazenly walk in and steal until the stores no longer find it profitable to stay in that area.

It's not hard to live in harmony with each other as long as we carry inside the understanding of the scripture and what Jesus represents. Those who understand this truth get what I'm saying... It pains me to see how superficial we all have become. We worship money, status, crazy beauty standards and obsess with the most meaningless petty things around us, totally forgetting about the true value of life, and those around us. That is most likely not true. There are many stories of people stopping and picking corn illegally from some farmer. But the important part being that it would only be 1-3 corns depending on how many was going to get to taste it. And most importantly foreign people that happen to stumble onto corn fields being as strange as snow for some. It would be something done illegally but hopefully as a one off experience. Like people living in corn country better not be stealing corn every harvest. I think a very wide spread thing across the world is apple theviefs. But like there is no place on earth you can truly avoid theft being a thing. Corn being taken from a farmer I mean that is a thing that happens. But whatever insanity happening in China? That is....

I come from rural China, and I recently graduated. The situation shown in the video is frequently reported in China, and I have witnessed similar scenes in my own village, although not with as many people as in the video. The main reason is that elderly people in rural areas often lack a source of income, relying only on relatively low government subsidies and financial support from their children. Additionally, the elderly in rural areas have a lot of free time, which can lead them to engage in unusual activities. The societal values of respecting the elderly and caring for the young, combined with a sense of community, often result in collective actions. Individual harm caused by one person is considered minimal, and in the eyes of some elderly individuals, they may not even perceive their actions as crimes. This makes the cost of committing such crimes low, as it's not feasible for the police to apprehend every individual involved in stealing crops. At most, they might receive a verbal warning. However, the elderly may not be responsive to such measures. Some elderly individuals, even when their children are very affluent, engage in activities such as collecting bottles. I have encountered families that earn more than $200,000 annually, and yet the elderly members of such families still go out to collect bottles. In the words of the elderly, it's like 'keeping busy is better than being idle. In China, the proportion of elderly individuals seeking small advantages is much higher compared to middle-aged and young people. They may even engage in perplexing behaviors, such as elderly people who collect recyclables pouring out someone else's partially filled beverage to take the bottle without waiting. In public transportation, they might demand that young people give up their seats, and if refused, some might resort to verbal abuse or even physical confrontation. There are instances where elderly individuals take away iron construction materials from others and sell them as scrap. This has led Chinese youth to nickname such elderly individuals as "lao bi deng." There's a saying that it's not elderly getting worse, it is bad people growing old.
