Even if it's to do a history lesson about how the CCP was behind the Mali civil war, and how that ties into what China is doing there now. That’s what I saw and analyzed from the time China introduced the soft loans through the Build & Road Initiative ( B&RI) and strangle the countries by bringing their own “ specialists” but at the same time their ordinary worker. And even opening cheap small shops. Depriving income to the locals workers, therefore depriving taxes to the government. Then loans can’t be paid. So then again interests grows until they control the country and dictate. That’s also a soft colonization through debts. That’s what happen to Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The government and the rich benefit by making deals with the Chinese while the poor don't even see the scraps of said deals while the very ground under their feet is being sold out. It's just new form of colonialism, except the Chinese do not feel any kind of obligation to care for the people. People can rightfully criticize the European colonialism for their various evils, but most nations that did settle the world also carried the 'white mans burden' mindset that provided at least some benefits for the new, often unwilling, subjects. For the Chinese it's purely numbers game, they'll appease and invest only as much as is needed.

Coming from Kenya myself, this is plain corruption. I know the locals over price things they import, but it really speaks volumes about how corrupt a country is when a foreigner comes and kills competition for many locals. I don't mind Chinese investors coming into Kenya to do things like manufacturing and real estate, but such type of retail is not healthy in the long-run. I am pretty sure knowing how Chinese operate, he basically said let me start by making a loss though I will kill competition then once I have the market look for ways to start making a profit, this is expensive to do and not many locals can compete tbh.
@juups86 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, manufacturing is all and good, i wouldnt want them do real estate though, that is one hell of a big and dangerous loophole.

Manufacturing in Kenya wasn't killed by foreigners. It was killed by the Kenyan elites so that they could import and raise prices. The Chinese just found a loophole and the same politicians that allowed greedy Kenyan businessmen to destroy our manufacturing sector are using xenophobic rhetoric to send small time traders into a frenzy. Stop blaming the Chinese and start blaming the people who made sure it's impossible for Kenyans to manufacture in the first place.
@JohnSmith-vn8dm Жыл бұрын
You are right, and that strategy of flooding the market at a loss or 0 profit only to hike up prices later is called "dumping". The CCP has subsidized many businesses and industries to execute the same strategy against other countries. Hopefully Africa is able to diversify its trading partners like with the EU and India to make this tactic less effective.
@diogeneselcinico2957 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-vn8dm I don't think you understand. Kenyan business men have complete control over our trading policies because they are the ones that import and even fund these politicians. 90% of the consumer products these businessmen import are from China and they redistribute them to smaller traders and supermarkets. China isn't the problem in Kenya, the Kenyan elites who do nothing but import are. They won't diversify either since the Chinese products are cheap and they can make huge profit margins by selling them double or triple the price

@aoeu256 Жыл бұрын
The US has done this with their subsidized products across NAFTA. You have to remember though that savings to the consumer allow the consumer to purchase other type of items which in turn increase jobs. Cheaper goods by a farmer that used horses meant that more people could turn to writing or manufacturing for jobs even although they lost their farming jobs. Cheaper goods by Chinese producers means that Africans can now afford different things like solar panels or infratructure. Instead of Africans manufacturing and trading like the Chinese they can move into different industries.
@Kanal-mx5rb Жыл бұрын
This is difficult to compare. In General, every one is the US could have created Amazon or Walmart. Same conditions. Same prices. Hard but fair. Neo-Colonialism isn't "Neo". People just have a wrong, distorted image of what old, European colonialism looked like. It was the exact same thing as what the Chinese are doing now. They didn't just jump out of ships and storm beaches. What happened was that some businessmen would show up in a place and ask the local king or chieftain whether he wanted to buy some modern weapons to defeat his arch enemies over the next hill with and when it was time to pay for those weapons, they offered him that he could just give them the rights to prospect for resources on his land, or establish a few farms or trading posts and the such. Then European workers moved in to run those businesses and they brought their families with them and then a few soldiers too to protect them and their investments and over time they started running everything. Only when there were uprisings and rebellions and atrocities against those white settlers and workers, then European armies were brought in to establish law and order. That is what European colonialism actually looked like and only because that was forgotten and replaced with silly myths about white people just coming in and randomly shooting everyone, as if they were the Mongolian Golden Horde, people falsely think that what China is doing now is any different or better and so those soon to be re-colonized people are doomed to repeat the same mistakes their ancestors made 300+ years ago. The story of colonialism has always been and still is a story of greedy, naive and corrupt local leaders selling out their homelands and their fellow tribes-people to shifty businessmen for personal gains.

The rest of it is a nice fairy tale Indians like to tell but it has no relation to reality. GM seeds? you do realise 99% of the food you eat is already genetically modified right? Most vegetables and fruits are not as we see them today and have drastically changed from genetic modification, the faux outrage over GM now just shows a lack of scientific understanding. Also given they're a poor african country GM crops would probably benefit them the most with higher yield

China is a huge country, the coasts are developped but the interior is super undeveloped since its landlocked and you can't get goods in there.

As a Kenyan consumer in a worsening economic crisis, the lost opportunity to obtain cheap goods actually hurts. At the end of the day the Kenyan traders are selling the same Chinese goods at higher prices due to higher markups. The demonstrations you are seeing was organized by traders, but the average consumer (or me, at least) was saddened by the closure of China Square.

These protests are just for political show. At the end of the day, whether China is kicked out of the country or not, the corrupt government stays the same. Nothing changes. People still suffer.

Antony: It might be cheaper but it can be poisonous to your body in the long run. Plus, they take the money out of the country [Kenyan] thus Kenya and Kenyans loose the benefits. They take the profits to China. You have to look at the bigger picture. Don’t trust the Chinese: be careful, be very careful. If the locals can’t take care of themselves and their children. Then who will. The LORD GOD ALMIGHTY is watching.

Yes we all want to buy things at a cheap price , but you don't seem to get what is really going on . I suggest you read up more on what is really happening in the countries that are being invaded by the Chinese under the guide of friendship .😢

@orlettacort3358 Well should other countries just come develop African countries for free, out of the goodness of their hearts?
