Between the news headlines talking about how strong China has become, and China's own domestic state propaganda, you'd think that China's projection of military power is unsurpassed. You'd be wrong.

What I have observed is that some of the strongest militaries in the world do not hold military parades showing off their “advanced” weapons. Only weak militaries, wanting to show the perception “how strong” they are, would do that.

@@reinermost6269 I call your bluff just just as the world is calling China's bluff. It makes zero sense not to let potential enemies really know your real capabilities. Brian stated about military parades, showcasing 'apparent' capability and he's right. Basically barking dogs that flinch when you stoop for a stone. @@reinermost6269 I remember seeing a video on the US military tech, and it mentioned that the US doesn't 'show off' it's best tech like that but rather keep it secret. This not only helps to 'surprise' the enemy during war with new tech, but it also helps to prevent other countries from copying that tech themselves, or getting the 'same ideas'. Sometimes being low key is best since if ya know what you're going up against ahead of time, you could probably find a way to counter it.

The chinese have a lot of money and bodies, which would make them a threat but not a winning one i think. Having also been in the military (Army), I think that proper planning and training CAN be done without direct combat experience. The thing is, the political incentives and lack of intellectual rigor in the CCP and PLA is what prevents them from preparing properly without operational experience. Even ill-prepared forces can adapt if they have the mental capacity and the poor quality of training will likely constrain their ability to do so. Consider that Russian forces did have plenty of personnel with combat experience but that regular Russian soldiers performed dismally after a few days. I attribute that to a lack of intense exercises that would have made it clear to officers how sleep deprivation and stress impacted readiness. The political incentives in the Russian military made passing up bad news hard so the deficiencies were not corrected despite having people who were well aware of them. I expect the PLA is even worse given the brain-drain and lack of focus from the business operations of the PLA and the political incentives against making one's superiors look bad.

Great post. I always enjoy your more realistic insights into CCP-controlled China. One additional thing I would like to point out is that the younger troops in China's military are all "Little Emperors" - the CCP would face massive backlash from the populace if they engaged in a war which killed the only child of thousands of families. And finally, the demographic crush is a slow-moving trainwreck that the CCP is powerless to stop. They will not win a war now, and they are quickly becoming unable to compete economically on the world stage. I don't see the CCP ever willingly giving up power, but they may eventually collapse under the consequences of decades of poor centralized governmental decisions.

Thank you for staying true and speaking up about China. I imagine you've seen Chinese police enter bars/clubs, forcibly drug test people on the spot and then send people to prison for years, all with no trial. This type of thing happens regularly there, according to a Chinese friend. This isn't even close to the worst thing happening in China, but really shocked me when I first heard it. A neighbor can simply make one phone call that accuses them of drug use etc. and minutes later, you'll be on your way to prison if you're just an average person. This really happened to someone's friend that I know. Instead of outrage at the slave camps and human rights violations, you have many Hollywood stars, influencers, business leaders and politicians that openly prop up the CCP and are ridiculous enough to actually speak out against the U.S., while publicly supporting China. I fear China's propaganda and control over our culture will be what destroys us, not conventional weapons. China is interested in saving infrastructure and resources. I believe that's the only reason China hasn't made a move for Taiwan. They want the semi-conductor fabs and blowing up the island gets them nothing, but if they play the slow game and infiltrate every part of Western intel and private sector, then they've won before it started.

However the PLA had vastly more heavy weapons like tanks, artillery, and aircraft as compared to the Vietnamese border forces. Normally, the process of recon, air cover, and infantry screens would make that a reliable win but the mind-mindbogglingly bad coordination of PLA offensives was why basically light infantry defenders could hold on. Normally, an experienced soldier with just a rifle is no match against an armored personnel carrier crew with a machine gun and only basic training. The CCP somehow #$%^ed it up.

No way they'd be able to successfully invade us. Flew the Nuclear triad during the Cold War and missions in Viet Nam- including Operation Linebacker II when they bombed Hanoi into surrendering and rescued our POWs. So you need to remember the feared B-52. They don’t require aircraft carriers and can fly around the globe with refueling mid-air. That is hands down THE MOST critical bomber we have. Look it up for yourself. So, we absolutely have the capability of annihilating a country-but after that, likely comes nuclear world war.

In olden times, a Greek ruler asked the oracle at Delphi what would happen, if he attacked Rome, militarily. He was told "If you attack, you will destroy a great empire." He attacked Rome- and destroyed a great empire. His own. The last big Chinese operation was against the Vietnamese, who had old US equipment, Russian & Chinese equipment. The Chinese were halted in their tracks. Taiwan has had since what, 1949, to prepare for this. It's about 100 miles to Taiwan, as I recall. Let us recall that the Japanese had some great resources- and planned to take over the entire Pacific. Battles at Midway, and later, went against them- though the Zero was a better fighter than the F4F.

Europe being anywhere near aligned with China was always just a Chinese fantasy, tbh. It was basically just Hungary, and maybe one or two more countries. The rest were just onboard with business deals, same as the US. Only difference is Hungary could veto EU resolutions, but ultimately all that means is that individual countries went through with them on their own. This is why you see for example Lithuania opening ties with Taiwan, Sweden banning the Confucius institute for being propaganda and Huawei parts in infrastructure, etc.

Bribing countries to be neutral in a war or undermine diplomatic efforts to constrain preparatory actions is a viable strategy hence why the tolerance of Huawei was so worrying. Once a war would start, time would work against the CCP but getting advantages before war is what a lot of bribery can do. The Russian invasion of Ukraine forced a degree of moral clarity that really acted against the CCP (aside from the obvious evidence the CCP was backing Putin).

The USA invaded Afghanistan in 3 weeks. They invaded Iraq in 1 month. The feats here is that the US could invade a country like Afghanistan in weeks, a country that couldn’t be further away from the USA or her military installations. Secondly, the USA managed to invade Iraq (2003) within a month, despite Iraq having one of the largest militaries in the world (550k fielded manpower). The United States has proven her ability to destroy a county with a large military, or with a long distance within a very short time. China may have a large military, and may be far from the USA, but if the US wasn’t enough to stop China, then places like India, the ROK, the ROC, Japan, Australia, and the Philippines would be some of the first US allies to assist the American military.

Economies are suffering and allies will look out for themselves at this point, look at the UK for instance, they are becoming divided due to a poor economy as sanctions are being altered and they are rethinking their options going forward. Ukraine has taught many recently that going to war is not your business when it leads to your Failure to support the nation's citizens. Right now I wouldn't count my chickens so fast to go to war, NATO is not strong as they were as we see Turkey of all nations holding hands with Russia right now as well as many nations of Africa...and let's not forget India seems to be looking out for themselves as they too are buying Russian oil and joining China, Russia on military exercises so your data may not add up if a war breaks out.

The problem with China is that their habit of making cheap copies of other people's stuff extends to not just their exports, but to their most important local businesses as well, especially the military. And the thing about military strength is: the more important the tool is for combat, the more resources you have to spend to make absolutely sure they're capable of defeating the enemy's equivalent equipment. So a rifle, for example, will need to be decently expensive if you want your soldiers to be as effective as can be, but due to the sheer quantity of rifles needed it's just unrealistic to make them all hyper expensive. Meanwhile having a Tank means you have to have a tank crew, support vehicles to carry extra fuel, ammo, and parts, etc, so having several cheap tanks will typically cost you far more in the long run than a handful of expensive tanks. Planes? Those need to be able to evade detection whilst simultaneously be able to lock onto enemy aircraft, and be easily deployed wherever needed. This poses a whole lot of engineering problems that drives cost way up, and trying to cut corners will just make you lose air superiority. China's mentality of quantity over quality is what makes casualties go up and battles more tedious than impressive.
