What an incredible privilege, to follow this score. NB, this is the "revised" orchestration just prior to Poulenc's passing, calling for a slightly reduced ensemble. MANY thanks for posting!

Not so: this 1953 recording uses the original orchestration; the revised version dates from 1962 (Poulenc died the following year). All other recordings use the later version, which reduces the wind and brass by dropping 1 bassoon (of 3), 2 horns (of 4) and 1 trumpet (of 3) -- the score still requires an orchestra of 50 players. It's a great pity that no copy seems to have survived of the 2-piano version that the composer prepared for Benjamin Britten and himself to play in a production at the 1958 Aldeburgh Festival (in the event, Poulenc canceled due to illness).

Point taken, the AUDIO uses the original orchestration, but isn't the image of the 1962 score? No matter... Always a pleasure to learn that I'm not the only person nuts about Poulenc in general and this toothsome romp in particular. 😄
