In Chinese dreams, documentary maker and China expert Ruben Terlou travels further through China, driven by his fascination for the Chinese and with the rapidly changing society as a compass.
No country in the world is so concerned with the future of its children as China. On the prosperous east coast, Ruben sees how parents are doing everything they can to offer their child the best possible future. With children from a boarding school he walks a long march of forty kilometers and talks about their dreams.
Ruben also speaks with parents who had one child as a result of the one-child policy and who lost it as a result of fate. They find support from each other and share their concerns about the absent future; because who will look after them when they are old?

Can anybody explain to me why this stunningly good reportage only made 766 views in 2 months? Guys, what are you doing wrong?? I simply don't get it. This is dw level and beyond. Is it the intro animation? It might be :))) or maybe the Dutch rather than English? Mindf*ck for me.

I thought it would be about Chinese education system before watching. It focus much on boarding school(re-education school), which is used to punish children and has a lot of negative news, thus notorious. Most of time, it's the problem of parents/family rather than children's, and the documentary shows it. A good documentary. Thank you.

I lived in this country for a year, studied its language and culture for 5, and I am still surprised by how much trauma load I just saw in this little girl who had to deal with so much. she's so courageous to have stood up against it all by herself. this is capitalism permeating society and families, and it is at its sickest. I hope she's alright and safe.

The economy of China developed so fast, yet the people's mentality is lagging behind. As a Chinese myself, I dislike the extreme materialism in the society -- which is one of the main causes of why so many kids going to the re-education school.

unfortunately this is how society force us to do. The country is way competitive than anywhere else. I think Wall Street is easier compared to out society and the economy inflation is crazy in China.
