By 2008, the US Drug Enforcement Administration had gathered enough evidence to prove that Hezbollah had transformed itself from a military and political organization into an international crime syndicate earning up to $1 billion a year from drug and weapons trafficking, money laundering and other criminal activities. ‘Project Cassandra’ was the ambitious, top-secret project to stop them. This three part series tells the story of ‘Project Cassandra’, through the testimonies of DEA agents and other people involved. It’s a tale that helps explain the history and rise of Hezbollah, making a complex geopolitical story accessible to a larger audience.
The assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on February 14, 2005 caused an earthquake in Lebanon and in the international community. All eyes turned to Syria, which was accused of being the sponsor of this attack. The army of Bashar al-Assad, which occupied part of the country, was forced to retreat amid hostility from the local population. With the withdrawal of the Syrians, Hezbollah lost a long-time ally and protector. More seriously, it also found itself in the dock, suspected of complicity in the murder of Hariri.
This documentary was produced by Magneto and directed by Jérôme Fritel & Sofia Amara. It was first released in 2023.

Excellent documentary - except for the title that must be corrected to “Who murdered Lebanese PM Hariri.” Hezbollah now controls Lebanon fully, even though chiites are no more than one third of the country’s population. Their political and military control brought the country’s economy to its knees. It’s important to understand that with every failed Israeli adventure in Lebanon, the direct result is an ever more powerful Hezbollah. The constant American support for Israel chips away at the credibility of its supposedly righteous (because officially “anti-narcotics”) financial crime operations. The Lebanese people are left holding the proverbial bag, as they are the ultimate victim of all these competing political and military forces.
