i now live in hong kong, kowloon. i remember Chatham Square. I used to work at the CCBA on Mott Street with the English teachers. Thanks for the memoies, and Confucius plaza also had classes. That was in 1980. Thanks for the memories.

a cool thing you can do in lion dance parades (only lion dance parades) is if you have a red envelope, you can feed the lion it and it will do a simple dance for you. you can also take picture as well depending on which group of lion dancing group your going to.

You missed Elizabeth center is an underground Asian shops filled with cute things, Japanese plushies, jewelry, cosmetics, etc. And another bubble tea/donut/coffee shop called "Alibaba" they sell delicious donuts and variety of bubble tea flavors!

Unfortunately, the Elizabeth Center is a shadow of its former self. 10 years ago, all the shops were open, and last I had went there a couple of years back, more than half the storefronts were empty.

You are doing yourself a disservice by not going to Jing Fong for dim sum. It is my go to dim sum place in Chinatown. And yes, it can be busy (take a number and wait) on weekends, but they will move people in and out quickly. You can either go really early, or go later (get there after 1:30 or 2 and you can easily get seated right away). They do the dim sum carts until 3 or 4 pm, so you won't miss much. If you are looking at doing dinner there on the weekend, I would highly recommend calling first. Many times the restaurant is booked for wedding banquets so it will be closed. My other go to place for dim sum is Joy Luck Palace on Mott Street just north of Canal Street.

Chinatown is awesome! I don't live in NYC ( I'm about 4 hours away), so when I come in I always look for a great hotel. Hotel 50 Bowery in Chinatown is amazing and right in the heart of things. This is great, I was wondering when you would do Chinatown! The parade is possibly to celebrate the community of people from Fujian Province. There isn’t a lot going there as far as jobs, so a lot of people from Fujian province move to the US and Canada. Primarily to work in Chinese buffets, and takeout places, and once they attain enough English, they move to smaller towns to open their own restaurants. Child labor is still pretty common, anything from putting lids on food containers to making dumplings to eventually working the phone or register. The Chinatown bus systems originally were created to ferry workers (and Chinese restaurant supplies) from the larger cities to smaller towns with jobs available, nearly ALL from Fujian province. I think the Lucky Star to the side of the Buddhist temple is the 3rd oldest bus system. Probably more than you wanted to know, huh?

great vid but you did forget one iconic eatery, this one (read on) and Jing Fong Restaurant are two of the places I remember going with my family when I was a kid and that was many years ago, lol. If your going to get ice cream in Chinatown this is the place you need to go, The Chinatown Ice cream Factory, 65 BAYARD ST. These two places are places I always took friends when down there. I agree for tourists they should visit Chinatown during the Lunar New year or during the Autumn if only to avoid the searing heat down there during the Summer but I love Chinatown too so anytime of the year it's a fun excursion to get some yummy food and pick up some things to eat at home as well as some other fun items from the various shops.

At 11:31, that's the On Leong Chinese Merchants Association building. There's used to be one in Chinatown, Chicago, but it was changed into the Pui Tak Center. *And I believe it's accessible through stairs because there's a small door entrance on the left.

You also forgot to point out that the Five Points area that was made famous in the Leo DeCaprio movie "Gangs of New York" essentially comprised a large portion of Chinatown, with the center of it pretty darn close to Columbus Park (the park you went to in Chinatown). The southern portion are where all of the government buildings now sit.

Should definitively go to East Boardway Mall. It's right under the subway, and it gets super busy. There's also many shops and restaurants within the mall. There's a big dim sum restaurant within the mall and it is probably the most popular restaurant near that area.

Where the old Sun Sing Theater used to be....and the turf wars in that theater. That movie theater was iconic to chinatown, (as well as Music Palace, and I think, the Pagoda Palace?? theater). The body counts at Sun Sing theater though... Wow. brings back memories from the 1970's and 1980's. All gone now.

Jing Fong for authentic dim sum on weekends, this place is humongous, looks like a ballroom dancing hall inside...the chicken feet tasted bland though..but maybe that's how authentic is supposed to taste like? and not the Americanized version I got used to? Hehe It's worth a visit even just for the experience.

I might be going to NY again, and Chinatown is definitely a region I didn't spent enough times in during visits. Question- all those food places you recommended, how English speaking\written menu are they?

Virtually all of the restaurants are well aware of the high number of tourists going to Chinatown. They will either have menus that are printed in both Chinese and English, or they will have pictures of all the dishes posted on the walls so you just need to point to what you want. Many of the waiters will also be able to speak English as well.

I've been to Chinatown at least a twenty times since the 70s and you showed me some new stuff. I took notes and will be definitely doing a dumpling run the next time. Great job on the video, your style of presentation is really enjoyable to watch.

Born and raised in Chinatown, NYC. U wear SNEAKERS. It's a given. No other shoes will be more comfortable. If ur not wearing sneakers in Chinatown or NYC, ur not a true born-and-raised-in-NYC native. I'm not saying tourists wont wear sneakers, but even after leaving NYC--a born native returning will always wear sneakers when returning to the old nabe. It's just THE most comfortable shoe for walking the concrete jungle of NYC. Sneakers have BOUNCE when pounding the pavement of NY.
