I have had the same events happen haha. From both sides too and i am african american. Strawberry festival we were followed by a camera crew because me and a group of friends were the only foreigners around that looked exotic enough to film. But i have also dealt with my more fair skinned friends getting celebrity status and photo time with strangers because they found them so beautiful. I would sit to the side and think, my brown sugar covered in cocoa butter skin is popping too lol

No doubt. It seems that McJagger brought the whole beauty of 'blackness' to mass 'pop' consciousness in the west way back in the early 70's with the hit song 'Brown Sugar.' A very contagious song as well.

Korean men have actually pestered me quite a few times for my number, kakao and facebook here too girls... I feel you! Sometimes it's too forward and scares me because it takes them awhile to accept me saying no. Also, I'm a Filipino-American here in SK and I can attest to a lot of this same stuff!!! People are so confused by me being asian, but being brown with dual lids, and a taller nose brim, and sharper jawline. People ask me if I have surgery, and my students refuse to believe I'm American they always taunt me saying I'm from Africa cause I'm brown, and their parents just tell their kids that I'm Korean and lying about being American. My white friends are always given free stuff and fast service while I go under the radar or sometimes treated like a foreign factory worker from the Philippines, so I get ignored often.... yeah stuff like that. Hello from Yangsan BTW!

Jane, what about tall Filipinos who have brown skin but monolids? Do they have the same experience? 😔 Also, is it the same if someone is teaching in a university?
@trulyjane
@trulyjane 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, I find that the Filipino communities regardless of face or eye structure tend to get treated as second class. Also, people often insult me by saying that I don't look Filipino because they say most Filipinos are ugly. There's also a stereotype of Filipino women being illegal mail order brides. Most foreigners in Korea are Vietnamese, Filipino, Pakistani, and Indonesian and they all get grouped into being looked at as second class. I couldn't speak for university teachers and for all parts of South Korea, but I live near Busan and I either am an invisible foreigner when my white friends are treated like Gods, or I'm treated like I'm not a real American when it comes to teaching, and I'm treated second class when it comes to service or general treatment. The students can say some really ignorant racist and prejudice remarks too. Again this has been my personal experience, and my experience living near Busan. I can't speak for all of Korea and all Filipinos.

It's difficult to identify brazilians most of the time because we come in all shapes, colors and sizes. lol I'd probably think you both were brazilian, but I guess it's more common to see people with blonde hair and blue eyes in the southern part of Brazil. So, say you were in the northern or, probably southeastern region, your friend would stick out, I guess.

KZbin suggest me this video, after watching experiences of black people in Korea and Japan. It's always fun and interesting to listen to people's experiences those countries, especially because the only see us (black people) on TV and even though we are living in a world where people travel a lot, the country that I mention have a very low rate of foreigners in their country. It's sometimes too bad the (negative) image that some Korean and Japanese have from Black people (thank you media), but the more they will be in contact with us, the more, I think, they will make differences between certain type of Black people. Great video! (y) Btw Melody, you have a pretty smile and you are "handsome" xD

I've heard other people teaching in Korea say the same things about children not grasping that Americans has many different cultural backgrounds. Do you briefly explain that America is diverse in culture do to immigration from it's inception, or do the schools frown upon that?
@charnaeyoung9815
@charnaeyoung9815 7 жыл бұрын
Shawna M Schools don't frown upon it. A fact is a fact. In only my experience, I have only had a few students refer to me as an african from Africa. And they only meant it to be rude. No one else was surprised that I was black and from America. They were just excited to hear that I was from America. I'm not trying to be mean about it towards them but the older children like 12 and up would have to be idiots to know celebrities like Pharrell Williams and Beyonce and Wiz Khalifa and not think that America has black people. At some point, it's just willful ignorance. Trust me. These kids are privileged enough to have internet and "handphones"l0l everywhere around them. They are constantly on the computer or their phones. If I know that black people are in England, they should know that there are black people in the U.S.A. 😂 It is only right.

For me, I actually did a lesson and show pictures of people from other countries and I explained to them what African American means, white American, etc. bc they literally have no idea that African American is a classification of people. So when an opportunity comes up for me to educate them on diversity, I always take the time to.

Great Video. i have people herein America react to me like that.. it's weird because, when people stare at you, and approach and compliment you, it can be very annoying at times.. but The Irony is, when some days you go out and No one hit on you and or really pay attention to you, I can realy really make you a bit insecure and self conscious, and make you wonder if something is wrong with you that day.. but i'm really curious to see how people would respond to me in a foreign country. I look like i can pretty much be half black and half of any other race on the planet, so i can kind of blend in in most places. at least that's what i think.

Hi Mel! I have a question, in the United States there's been a lot of buzz about North Korea's missile testing recently. In a past video of yours (and in other EPIK videos I've seen) there's not a lot of worry but has that feeling changed since these new news stories? My heart is still set on teaching with EPIK in Korea but I'd like to know your perspective on safety. Thank you! I am in love with all of your videos, but hey, you already know!
@MelodyAlisa
@MelodyAlisa 7 жыл бұрын
lol! living for the "you already know" reference!! So, I was actually just talking about this topic w/ friends. In America, the media hypes up the drama of North Korea and makes it seem very, very dangerous, which it actually might be because Kim Jong-un IS crazy.. but in South Korea, when I was there at least, no one was bothered, worried, and paid much attention to it. There are North Korea attack drills (their version of fire drills), so they have precautions in place but no one worries about it and my theory is because they've lived their whole lives so close to NK, they know nothing really is going to happen. Hope this helps!

Even foreigners who come to this country think of Americans as only white people. I find it insulting that when they speak of white people they say "he/she is American." I heard this a lot in Florida and I would ask them "What is an American?" They would look at me like what kind of question is that. It's funny that as a "black American" I would have to point out that I was born and raised in this country, I am an American. I also find it kinda odd when blacks here just assume that my background is only American. My mother came here from South American in the late 1960s so I was raised like a Caribbean. Problems come up when blacks mention certain kinds of foods or tradition etc. and I tell them I don't know what that is. I have to explain to them that I was not raised as an "African American." That is really what bothers me about the term "African American." Black people are looked at as being all the same and there is no difference if you are "black." Things like this is what causes prejudices and division in the black community, I think. You have to get to know someone as an individual and not make an assumption about them by something as superficial as skin color.

This video was so interesting, do you by any chance know how Koreans react to light skinned Hispanic people because I'm Mexican but I don't have a super tan skin tone, I'm more on the lighter side.

I'm Mexican(-American) and also on the lighter side and lived in Korea for a few years. From my experience, it's clear to them that I'm foreign and they treated me the same general way they treated other foreigners (except maybe black or asian because they weren't curious about my hair nor did I blend in like they mention in the video). So just curious about where you're from and what you're doing in Korea. And I didn't really experience any negativity because I was a foreigner. Instead. since I don't look like the stereotypical American they're familiar with (white, blonde) they were always curious where I was from (or how I got to America). They would guess based on my physical features (slightly above average size nose [lol] and long, straight, dark hair.) I often got Indian, Arabic, Middle Eastern, Indonesian and even Thai. Usually taxi drivers like to play this game with me lol but not one person guessed Mexican because it's not on their mind. We're not a very common group out there nor do we have much exposure. So no one is going to treat you differently (in a negative way) because chances are they have no idea where you're from. Lol The first thing they'll say when you tell them you're Mexican is "oh, taco!" lol and maybe even ask about the country.

Melody, it might be good if you make an effort to learn the language, so that you’d understand what they are talking about and they might actually open up to you in a way that you might find pleasantly surprised. Also, they might stare at you bc they think you are beautiful.

I'm surprised to hear about this - the 'unicorn effect'. I thought Koreans were a polite people... this old granny curiosity can be sweet, but not if it tries to cross personal boundaries. People in my country complain avout racism, but it's not really an issue - not to such a degree that locals would try to come and touch your hair...

NarnianLady It's very common even in the US,that whites will touch or try to touch Black women's hair.Especially if they've got natural hair or braids,dreads or twists.So you can imagine how a foreigner would be curious.

I have had curious African children touching my fair skin and hair, it was understandable.. But with grown-ups it's kind of not so cute, if they feel entitled to come and touch without permission.

Wow it’s so interesting that they’re so open to having foreigners there. I’m from Atlanta, and I live in an area where we have a lot of Koreans. It’s still very eclectic-different Hispanic groups, Chinese, Vietnamese, Bosnians, etc.-BUT, the Koreans in this area are notoriously racist. My friends and I have all experienced it. For example, my friends went to a net cafe and there was a really nice section that they wanted to sit in. The employee straight up told them, “sorry, that section’s only for Koreans.” When asked why, he says he’s only repeating what the owner told him. I honestly wonder why they’re like this in my area.

Although i'm only half Asian (Filipino) when i worked in an English school in Japan many student would ask me if i was Japanese. also my experience was similar to the Chinese american girl but with a little bit more salt as I'm just half white with black hair so I'm not white enough to have be treated a "unique" and "interesting" and got alot of shit because of it.
