This is a silly debate. The story of Sun Wukong existed before there was a China or a Taiwan. It existed before there was CCP, KMT, DPP or whatever alphabet soup people can come up with. If anything it is a story of the Huaxia people of Zhongyuan that speaks of universal “human”/primate aspirations and nature.

Uhmmm Taiwan preserves what the CCP destroyed during the cultural revolution, so if anything, Taiwanese culture is stronger and older while Chinese culture is far weaker (and superficially materialistic). And your point about politics being the only identitifer - will you then also say that about North and South Korea?
@GIN.356.A2 ай бұрын
@@satoshihatake that is false. That's like saying the forbidden palace museum in Taipei is somehow superior to the real forbidden palace, just because it has artifacts from there. Culture is inseparable from the land it was grown from. The geography, the climate, everything inspired the culture to be what it is. How can Taiwan claim it has Chinese culture, when it's people have never even experienced winter as described in chinese poetry? That tired old narrative is nothing more than a political soundbite from the last century. And disappointingly, Taiwanese slobber that shit up because without politics, there's nothing more they can offer. NK SK is completely different issue, we can revisit when NK releases a game that gross $350M in the first week.

The idea that your nationality comes from the place you were born or the passport that you hold has a very short history. Before world war 2, most Asians can travel to another asian nation WITHOUT ANY PASSPORT OR VISA. Most asian nations do not have a national ID card system. Back in those days, anyone who looks like Chinese, speaks Chinese or adopts the Chinese culture is a Chinese citizen. When my grandpa who had lived in Malaysia for 20+ years was arrested by the British empire for helping the Malaysian Communist insurgency in the 1950s, they threatned to have him deported back to China. In short, he was not considered a Malaysian citizen. It is also because of this reason that many of the older generation does not have any distinction between who is a 中国人 or 华人. To them they are the same thing.

There was prejudice before then. Han (of KMT or Communist) even before World War 2 treated regular Manchurian people badly because of Qing rule. You had to say you were Han and pass for Han for them to treat you like you were Chinese. The same goes for Hmong/Miao and other ethnic groups.

I watched people streamed and watched Wukong. I would say what almost everyone cares about is how good the game is, from the gameplay, music, graphic to story. You can see how the developers really love the game and want it to be the best version possible. Everything else like cultural promotion or political ideas, are just secondary. A game may try to include these elements, but the fundamental game must be good enough for people to care about them
