I was taking an ESL class in University of New Hampshire during 1990's. Two Chinese graduate students brought a pipa (lute like the lady in the center is playing) and a flute at the end of semester party. They started play the traditional music that was beautiful and everyone enjoyed. Then our instructor's husband started play bluegrass banjo, I joined with a guitar. These guys kept up with it and improvising solos with no effort. That was one of my greatest memories playing music.

This is wild. I've always heard the far east was fascinated with some bluegrass. Being from Kentucky, I think this is pretty cool. Who duh thunk these instruments would compliment eachother so well.

Both styles of music are based on the Pentatonic Scale and so natural are very similar and can be played together.

When I learned the chromatic scale, nothing was mentioned about a "nationality" belonging to any one of the notes. Music easily transcends all the "restrictions and biases" we put upon ourselves if we let it, and here's the living proof. Bravo!!!!

I love how the Chinese musicians put their own spin on it, bringing out their own personalities, and the personalities of their instruments. Musically, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its two parts.

this was great!!! I grew up w/Bluegrass & to see bluegrass being played on chinese instruments was fantastic!! I loved seeing their expression of how fun this music is while playing their chinese instruments. This was so much fun & I'm so glad to see music that derived from the moonshine mountains being enjoyed in other cultures. I wish you all the best in your music endeavors, 4 u all are no doubt awesomely talented! Thank You for sharing w/us!!

You're both right. All these stringed instruments have common tonal and acoustic qualities, because of their common structures (plucked or bowed strings stretched across a hollow resonant body.) It is an example of cultural/instrumental/musical convergence (coming together).

They're shredding. It's fun to hear them play the melody through different scalar sensibilities. They don't naturally go to many blue tones, and you don't hear the usually jazzy inflections a bluegrass outfit would put in the second breaks of all these players. This kind of cultural exchange is GREAT! Now, did he play one of THEIR tunes?

Mandolin even has a 'Fat' sound in comparison to the Red C's most active three pickers. Only the far right instrument had it, but not enough heard of it until the last few bars. Great rythym together and no shortage of spirit and enthusiam.... Really cheery stuff. Great post :>)

Lovely performance and great idea. The combination of Chinese music with bluegrass seems really to be catching on. Chinese music sounds great in combination with Irish music as well; if you can find the video or CD "The Chieftains in China," it works so well, there are so many similarities between the traditions (not least of which is that the most common keys for both are D major and G major).
