I agree with your opinion to noisy clutches. It reminds me to times when children put ice sticks on the rear wheel to get attention. A kingdom for a silent race bike wheelset. Thanks for your videos!

Man I remember back in the day oz cycle, Rj the bike guy and bikeman4u. Repairing my father’s and grandfather’s bikes, waxing chains, degreasing chains using deisel fuel just to squeeze everything out of a vintage mtb and road bike so that i have something to race with. These guys build my childhood. Using what little was tools available to enjoy and compete

Neat to see the DT swiss copy freehubs on chinese carbon wheels, some thicker grease in there I believe makes them nice and quiet, mostly in MTB the noisy freehub trend is gone, it was super annoying while it was around.

I have a well known Japanese expensive wheel set, and everything goes fine until one day I passed the 75 kms hour speed down hill. It was a nightmare, believed I had a flat and my life end there. Fortunately I was able to stop and was only rear unbalance wheel. Checked all my Strava files and all faster speeds went about 72 , 73 kms/h. So 75 kms/h was the barrier. Unpleasant. Check your bike handle it from the seat post and move the pedals with the hand as fast you can, let freewheel work and if you notice any up-down vibration check it. A few grams of sheet lead glued under the rim tape will cure it. It's a good video to make Mr. OZ Regards from up-over.

Thanks mate for pointing out that bike wheels have to be trued to cope with high speeds. The valves from the deeper rims cause a weight distribution issue. Usually i true them in the stand with led balls from fishing until it doesn’t have a heavy point 🤙
@milybanily
@milybanily Жыл бұрын
@@domestique3954 My experience was different., heavier part of the wheel was at the opposite part of the valve... Made any full wheel stand tests just adding some lead weight to the upper part of the spokes and later fine tuning with that weight glued under rim tape. I hammered lead to get a tin layer with round borders ....and looks fine now. Front wheel had no issues.

Great review! Interesting to think about spoke tension. If the layup is not uniform then the stiffness of the rim will vary around the circumference. Non uniformity may be affected differences in the adhesive thickness between plies along with non symmetrical layers, seams or wrinkles. Thanks for the thorough review. Personally, I'm leery of no-name brands for the simple reason that there is not a chain of accountability from vendor engineer to consumer and without destructive testing, we don't know if the components will prove reliable or safe...so I'd pass. 🙂
@joystation1
@joystation1 Жыл бұрын
Great thorough review. While there was no rim tape on, weren't you tempted to adjust the tension of the worst spokes ? What is the issue with "ripples" on the inside of the rim ? It can't be aesthetics. Why do you bother greasing the freehub splines before fitting the cassette and the centrelock splines before fitting the rotors ? They aren't surfaces constantly sliding over one-another and the grease only attracts dirt which will grind away at the contact points.
@stevenleffanue
@stevenleffanue Жыл бұрын
I ride wheels for 1,000km for review then adjust spokes if required. Nipples inside rim for better aerodynamics. Grease stops creaking ,prevents corrosion and easier to remove cassette when required.

Rims only or wheelset? Pretty much all rims will take 110kg. For wheels it depends on the build. Preferably a wheelset that doesn't use ultra thin spokes.

You measured the internal rim width with a digital caliper as 19mm but at the end you said the 21mm internal width was a little too small and you would like to see the manufacturer make them slightly wider at 23mm. I don’t understand the discrepancy?

I seriously don't understand why the wheel "has to be loud" - I would not mind completely silent even - the bike is not (should not) be a noise generator, right? We make sure everything is tighten etc so nothing is moving and making noise, but wheel ... o no, this one "has to show to everybody how important I am" ;-)
@xjoelportox
@xjoelportox Жыл бұрын
I felt the same, until I got a loud hub and realized it serves as a bell to alarm people on the road. During the ride it's silent, you have to stop pedalling, even the slightest, to make noise
@milybanily
@milybanily Жыл бұрын
Carbon wheel used to be louder due drum effect. After 20 minutes ridding you will not hear it just because your brain just delete this waste info. Auditive fatigue or something like that is calling. Sound will not make you faster....except if you can pass sound barrier....

Carbon spokes should never touch at a crossing as the micro-flexing along with any dirt present will wear the spoke thinner at this point. This eventually results in spoke breakage. Not applicable for steel spokes.

What amuses me is the fact that all these pundits in Australia 🇦🇺 & the USA 🇺🇸 & l suspect else where jump on the Chinese Band Wagon regarding Carbon Wheelsets & Frames . Specialized/ Roval spend big $$$ 2 Design there Frames & Wheelsets in there Win Tunnel & they have the Input from the Pro Peleton Riders. The Chinese don't do any of these Luxuries & yet u folk push them . The best the Chinese can ever do is try & copy . 80 kilos certainly isn't much weight . Construction of Wheelsets in 2 halves isn't smart either .
