Chinese Doctors Changing Africa's Healthcare | China/Africa Big Business | Business Documentary from 2013
Episode 4: Doctors for Africa
In this fourth episode, we look into a Chinese medical team acting in Zanzibar. In the second part of the video, we follow a Chinese delegation of doctors working in Angola.
This series looks at how big Chinese enterprises have found a foothold in Africa, how they’ve often had to adapt their approach and strategies to fit the African market, and how Chinese and African employers, employees and business partners have learned from and influenced one another.

The Chinese medical teams are free services given to African countries from the China government. About 45 teams are operating in the Africa. China said over 40 medical workers have died in AFrica and did not return back to their familes in China since 1963. The Chinese medical free services team started in 1963 when Algiers got independence but inherited a collapsing medical service. Algiers asked the world for help and China was the only one responded and started this tradition. The medical teams are purely an act of charitable gesture and has become a permanent feature in some AFrican countries. Over the years China has trained African doctors and nurses in China and sent them home. Together with the host country's own medical personels the medical services in Africa have improved. Many Chinese medical workers are now part of the host country's establishment instead of a stand alone practise, although in isolated places this may still the case.. In 2020 China also built the AFrican CDC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Chinese medical workers are backed by China thus it is reasonably staffed and adequately supported by medical supplies and equipment. This isn't the same with the medical assistance from the western countries.

According to data from the WHO, there is 1 doctor for every 5,000 people in Africa in 2015. The population in Africa in 2020 amounted to 1,331,396,559 people. If we were to use the above ratio, we can estimate that there are about 266,279 doctors in all of Africa (1,331,396,559 / 5,000). Sources: The Conversation. Ask Wonder

Thank you to the doctors and the staff for your sacrifice. It's definitely not easy to leave home for a foreign country. I have a hard time just working in a different region of my country. I hope the locals learn to be appreciative of their efforts. The governments should sensitize the community about their good work. As Africans, we should borrow a leaf from them, by trying to contribute and invest in each other's social and economic development, even in small ways.

Really makes you question individualist values where you develop mainly to earn more and more to live a comfortable life yourself, and secure comfort for your children, and after that comfort for your grandchildren… you’ll never be done to be ready to help others except for a small number of people who don’t buy into these beliefs. There are enough resources to help everyone, only our value system makes us believe there isn’t enough to go around. You can see it from how the western countries hoarded the covid vaccines such that they had 2-3 doses per citizen even though the unused vaccines will expire anyway, before even thinking about helping others. Whereas the moment factories in Thailand and India etc got patent waivers to manufacture the western vaccines, they produced both for themselves and others *almost at the same time* - they sold/shared to other countries *before* fully stockpiling for their own people.

I have a friend who, although not a doctor, is an aid worker in Africa. He has told me very much about Africa. Two things struck me. The first was that the first month they were there, the whole team, except him, contracted malaria, which is said to be a very painful disease. Secondly, the "elite" soccer team formed by the whole company was defeated by the local teenagers....... The second thing made me feel very emotional, is it true that Chinese people are not born to play soccer?

I mean the Chinese government in general… sure. Each Chinese individual though? They are there because they genuinely want to help & also be inspired by the beautiful people of Africa. I’m sure the CCP knows that sending aid will help it’s influence in Africa. But the US increased their influence in Africa by setting up military bases. China did it through aid, infrastructure, & mutually beneficial projects. I mean if your friend is in trouble & you can help, you do so because you care but it also strengthens your relationship & therefore influence over them.
