Chinese Fans Are Attacking This US-Born Figure Skater Who Chose To Compete For China And Fell

Zhu Yi, a 19-year-old US-born figure skater who gave up her US citizenship to compete for China at the Beijing Olympics, is facing intense backlash on Chinese social after she fell during her debut on Sunday Feb. 6.
As the only women’s singles entry for the team skate, Zhu competed in both women’s segments.
Her short program ended in disaster after she crashed into the barriers in her opening jump sequence and missed a jump later.
Team China, who was vying for a bronze medal, fell to 5th. Its standing was solidified a day later during Zhu’s free skate program, when she fell two more times.
#ZhuYiFellOver quickly became a trending hashtag on Chinese social media platform Weibo before it was deactivated, but not before racking up over 200 million views, according to CNN.
A second hashtag #ZhuYiMessedUp remains on Weibo with over 80 millions views.
Many users questioned Zhu’s selection in the team event while others criticized her for not being able to speak fluent Mandarin.
“Please let her learn Chinese first, before she talks about patriotism,” one Weibo user wrote.
“I’m upset and a little embarrassed,” Zhu said to reporters after her skate. “I guess I felt a lot of pressure because I know everybody in China was pretty surprised with the selection for ladies’ singles and I just really wanted to show them what I was able to do but unfortunately I didn’t.”
Fans around the world have since taken to social media to defend Zhu.
“Zhu Yi doesn’t deserve the bullying she’s receiving for something as senseless as a fall. She is & will always be Chinese, regardless of where she was born,” one user wrote.
Born to Chinese parents in the US as Beverly Zhu, Zhu changed her name to Zhu Yi and relinquished her US citizenship in 2018 to represent China as part of the country’s “Morning Road” initiative for recruiting athletes for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
She is one of several foreign-born athletes to decide to compete for China including fellow Chinese American freestyle skier Eileen Gu, who has become the unofficial face of the Games in China and a gold medal favorite in women’s ski slopestyle.

She is being criticized because her spot is likely related to a deal with her dad returning to China. It’s likely her spot was unfairly taken from Hongyi Chen. Tell the full story.

^^^ this. Chen Hongyi had to delay her gaokao (university entrance exam) twice, I believe, competing her ass off for years to earn team China that one spot. This was then taken away by Zhu bc of the reason you stated + politics. I will say, it's not really Zhu's fault, and it awful she had to face all that hate on her own bc it's not entirely her own doing. But the full story is more complex than than OP presented.

Zhu Yi gave up her USA citizenship to compete for China and she took the spot of Chen Hongyi, a hardworking and talented native Chinese figure skater who was SUPPOSED to compete in the Olympics but Zhu Yi took her spot!! So here's the thing, in her previous competitions she typically got relatively middle of the pack placement. She's still good just not Olympic worthy yet. Also her dad got 30 million dollars from the pentagon to research top secret AI stuff. After researching he fled to China, gave them his AI research, and renounced his U.S citizenship. He took only one of his daughters Zhu (old name was Beverly) and she bypassed the preliminary rounds and took the spot Chen Hongyi.

It's especially sad now that we know China scouted these winter Olympians like Eileen gu and zhu yi to participate as they tried to get alysa liu to do. China were the ones who decided they needed talent from elsewhere and the woman who earned them the olympics place wasn't good enough for them, only for these girls to be villified by both Chinese and us media and citizens for "abandoning their country" or "stealing the olympic spot from the one who earned it then falling". People assumed that Zhu Yi did not qualify for the olympics because of her talent (people liked the performance of another native Chinese born figure skater more), but because of her father's connection (kinda similar to how Ivanka Trump was meeting with world leaders despite lacking experience in foreign diplomacy and people are mad about it due to nepotism)

I’m so confused.. shouldn’t people be upset with her father for doing that to his daughter? Why be upset with her when he took full control over the situation in buying her and placing her there just to come back to China? Did she want to do this or was she forced into doing it because of her father?! I don’t know I just feel as though she wouldn’t have wanted to take the spot of that other skater in my opinion if she wasn’t forced too.

It's probably because there are tons of athletes in China waiting for an opportunity like an olympic appearance. The fact that she fell is then made out to be a failure(when it isn't in reality) but it's perceived badly when so many ppl in china would gladly take her place and probably win a medal. Harsh but that's how it is in china

You can read in the comments. I don't justify the cyber bullying, but people are mad because her wealthy father made a deal with the government to return to China on the condition that she preforms in the Olympics. This resulted in the spot being TAKEN AWAY from someone else who is proven to be far more talented and hard working that she has displayed.

@@irinadica7794 and a bit of additional information, she's not a bad skater. Recently she's shown to be on good terms with that other skater and have had much better performance. She likely just wasn't suited for olympics then, but have the talent and potential. Just, shame about how she got into the position. Chinese people in general have a very strong culture on patriotism, so the fact that she doesn't speak mandarin very well irked a lot of netizens and made the situation worse for her. Very place a lot of value in unity, but due to the culture, it also makes gatekeeping a thing that unfortunately happens quite often.

I know it's a case of nepotism, but if so why no one is angry at the gov, the national team, the university where her dad works, etc. They are the enablers of this nepotism thing. And if it works for this Zhu family, I'm sure there are many other cases that may involve other sports or other industries. It's okay to criticize these people but don't forget the root of the problem.
