Tears and online criticism as China’s US-born skater Zhu Yi falters in another Olympic routine

China’s US-born figure skater Zhu Yi burst into tears on the ice during her latest Winter Olympics routine on February 8, 2022. The 19-year-old faced intensified criticism online as she finished last in the Beijing 2022 women’s short programme team event. Zhu’s fortunes stood in sharp contrast to that of Eileen Gu, another athlete born in the United States who has chosen to represent China at Games. Gu trended heavily on Weibo on February 7 after participating in the big air qualifier. Her reaction to losing her skis during a fall in her second jump was described as “cute”, as she later qualified for the final after nailing her third jump.

I do understand though, because her father is an incredibly powerful figure in China and Zhi Yi did not actually qualify to go to the Olympics, but was still picked above the skater who was. There are rumors of nepotism because of her being picked over that skater and her father being such a powerful man. So now, many nezitens are disappointed because if she did take the chance from the skater who rightfully earned it, then she should be winning and not wasting another skater’s chances- Zhi Yi’s best isn’t enough in this situation.

It’s a bit more complicated than her not qualifying. Basically, domestic competitions were held where she scored above Chen Hongyi but there were no videos for some time. Eventually some footage was released I believe. What you’re getting confused is that Chen Hongyi earned the spot for China the previous season. She wasn’t selected yet as they hold specific competitions for that, but she was anticipated. The nepotism definitely could have affected bias judging though, not unheard of in this sport.

But how can you prepare for that pressure, how can you know that you can handle it. She fell, and then clearly the stress got to her and made her fumble further, but the reaction online probably is a huge factor in her confidence. You can’t just say if you can’t handle it, don’t go, because nothing prepares you for the reaction and judgement of billions of people.

Zhu’s dad (朱松纯) is an expert in the field of artificial intelligence and a great asset to China. Netizens are furious because it showcases China’s class divide and unfairness, as another more qualified athlete was cut out from the Games. Zhu’s Olympic run will help her greatly when she applies for an Ivy League school in the future. They’re a bit rough on the girl, but I guess they don’t have other channels to vent their frustration about the unfairness in Chinese society.

People are rightfully upset but the reaction towards her is misguided, her father is some AI scientists who received an invitation to work in China and part of that "agreement" appears to be that his daughter got an Olympic spot when there are 3 others who are equally or more qualified than her; one of them didn't have access to anywhere near the same level of resourced as her, comes from a much more underprivileged background and had to pay out of pocket for a lot the training, has more experience and is just as qualified if not more. The reality is she doesn't actually deserve her spot, she got it because she was born to the right father - the issue is much greater than just some 19 yr old kid falling and getting hate for not winning - it's a manifestation of the growing injustice and indignation a lot of people in China feel. She obviously doesn't "deserve" to get bullied by 1000s of people online but it's not like she's innocent either.

I heard that this girl’s father is a top intelligence professor for China or something like that. Due to her father’s status, she was able to be in the Olympics and replacing the others who had true talents. Should she be receiving all these hates? Nope. Zhu zi did not deserve the spot. She got it due to the Chinese government wanting her dad to come back to China and the dads condition was that she gets a chance to compete in the Olympics. People are mad because she had the worst performance and it was obvious to see that she was the worst out of everyone during the qualifiers yet she was given a really high score so she’d get into the Olympics. Not only that, before and during the competition she barely knew how to speak Chinese. Imagine if the same situation occurred where someone from China got a spot on the US team due to nepotism and barely knew how to speak English. There’s no foreign hate on this. If it was, then Gu Ailin would have gotten more hate because she’s of mixed decent and looks like it too. BUT the difference is Gu Ailin EARNED her position, she could speak Chinese fluently, and she did an amazing job during the Olympics and has an amazing attitude. She’s a big celebrity in China where everyone knows her, adore her, and admire her. I think the truly discriminatory people here are those who thought Chinese netizens are infuriated due to her being a foreigner without actually understanding that they’re upset because she stole a position she didn’t earn due to nepotism. Not only that you guys are sorely mistaken, foreigners in China have a higher status than Chinese citizens when it comes to so many things. If you look like a foreigner (especially if you’re white) you get a much larger salary (doubled easily) for doing the same job as someone who is Chinese.
