Quality control on these is simply stunning, regardless of their price. To have so many of them write so well out of the box, it's eye-opening for me, but it also saddens me that manufacturers of much more expensive fountain pens (Visconti especially) continue to ship out products that give sub-par writing experience.

Recent production pens do see a lot of changes, but this all begin really way back in the 90's when the industry start to come away from regulation and state planned production. Before the time, the factories are limited by what they can do with limited access to materials, and technology. While constant exchange of business and technical know-how do happen during the 80's they fail to expand from the experience until the 90's when the business management are let open up. A great Video that could be most educational to those who had not yet had the chance to experience Chinese fountain pens

I have recently ordered a WS 3008 and the Lecai acrylic pen, plus have my eye on a few others on eBay. Hello, I have a few Chinese pens and others and every one of them stops writing even through I clean them. I saw your video on good Chinese pens to buy. My question is should I go buy a few of those and stop fussing or am I doing something to cause all my pens to stop writing? I try to use the same ink in one pen and it is a monte verde ink. I have Conklin, Monteverde, Jinhao pens. Anyway I’d really appreciate your opinion since I am tired of researching how everybody else keeps their pens clean. Thanks so much for what you do! Polly

I have I am now more informed and I thank you for that. For what it's worth, I recently purchased and received the Wing Sung 3008 four pen set and my pens have a click-lock mechanism that keeps it from turning easily and this spilling ink. I have the very same pink one inked up right now with Noodler's Lexington Gray ink and it is beautiful. Happy writing!

Not quite sure what that "too many pens inked up" thing is all about. Right here and now, I have about 22 pens inked up, ranging from no-names all the way up to a Lamy 2000 and a Custom 74, but there have been times when I've easily had 40 or more inked up at once. How often do I write with them? Not often enough. How often do I end up dumping out 1ml or more of ink down the drain when I choose to re-ink them? Far too often. Am I likely to get my house in order and stick to 3 inked pens any time soon? Don't bet on it! Part of the fun of this hobby is the inking and, dare I say, the flushing & cleaning. It's all part of the addiction...

Hello Chris. I am trying to clean some of my fountain pens . I have noticed some difficulties with them. Inks tend to get dry faster . Is that because of converter issues ? Feed issues ? Thank you.
@chrisrap523 жыл бұрын
Lots of causes, for me the cap not sealing well, ink dries out. I've had full converters become empty over a few months. Some pens better than others. Hooded nibs dry out less. Thankfully, usually a good soak in water will dissolve the dried ink.

Chris, as always, thank you! I am trying to move toward a more responsible choice with regard to investing in more pens than I can us; hence, I found this review interesting. My question would relate to whether you note a significant improvement in a Chinese pen, one like the PENBBS models recently reviewed and available at prices varying from around $22 up to $39 or so, versus the one that (as with you) attracted me, the Wing S 698. I do find the acrylic work of the Kaigelu 316 appealing, and I have ordered one PENBBS (the light green you reviewed, now at $22, but still less expensive than some other color combinations) just to evaluate. I am starting a “Card Ministry” and will give some pens away too. Any thoughts of which is best for a new-to-pen user with limited funds? I want to make it easy for anyone to participate.

My favorite under $1 pen for beginners is the Jinhao 991 with hooded nib. I just got 8 for under $8, delivered. Easy to use, consistent, doesn't dry out. Many times called student pen. Need to look at pics to confirm hooded nib. If you want to upscale the Wing Sung 3003 is great, next 3008 (piston fill), both under $2. These are more classic fountain pens & will require more user interaction. I've given many of all of these away to positive results.

I have an Hero 901 and Jinhao x750, I write with the Hero 901 more often because I prefer finer lines. But now that I know much more about the subject after watching so many reviews, I bought a Kaigelu 316 because I have really liked the Duofold aesthetics, and currently they began producing it with an ef nib, which is meant to be 0.38 mm, but if it writes de facto as a 0.5 mm nib I will be happy, can't wait for it to arrive.
@chrisrap524 жыл бұрын
The 316 is a heavy pen. I tend to like wider nibs. 0.7 or more.
@Fernandohe1114 жыл бұрын
I think its hard to find many people who like fine to extra fine nibs, its just that my writing style is better with 0.5 or less. I think the weight of the 316 will be fine for me, the Hero 901 appears to be notoriously heavy, I gave it once to a few relatives of mine and they thought it to be a really heavy pen, but after many weeks using it I don't feel it as being heavy anymore.

Also, I definitely don't find anything lacking even though you use only one camera; the content is still entertaining and informative, which is what matters really. Some other video ideas I'd be interested in: could you do a video of pens you regret buying or had a negative experience with? Or maybe a discussion on how you chose which Chinese pens to buy (e.g. your thoughts when you peruse Ebay), considering the vast number of designs and mimics out there it can be quite overwhelming!
@chrisrap527 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the format. My favorite pens vary depending on the day and what I am writing. Any of these could be a favorite for a day or more. Most of my regrets are experiments where I expand beyond, take a chance. Sometimes the pen needs to sit for a while while I learn what it is good for. I will think about it. Some of the pens I don't like have been sold or given away.

This is truly a nice collection. I'm a Chinese and had more first hand experience with Chinese fountain pens. Undoubtedly a lot of Chinese manufacturers kind of copy foreign companies designs. To be honest, it’s hard to be creative in the pen world now. There’s just so many models out there. Sailor also copy Montblac’s cigar shape. But at the same time I see a lot of more creative Chinese fountain pens in the market. Maybe foreign retailers are not so interested in those models. And pen addicts in other worlds get to see less of these. Ps, Chinese fountain pens are really cheap.

As far as I know, it is the Kaigelu 316. It is a nice pen, but sadly very back heavy. I cannot write more than a Din A4 page with it, without feeling a "tiredness" in my hand, because of the heaviness. (The end piece of the pen is not made of plastic but metal, therefore the weight and the unbalanceness). The Kaigelu 356 is better for long writing sessions in my opinion.

Last time I purchased chinese pens is 4 years ago and it was hit and miss. Quality wise it was ok but not impressive. These pens dont last long and change color overtime. And the fact that they are a lot of chinese pens that are copies of other pens. I recently purchased a couple of others and im hoping they are better than they used to be. I will see once i get them

Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for giving Etsy as one of your sources😃 on another of your videos. I like that shop. I would rather purchase my pens at the shop than eBay. I now have 4 fountain pens, I can see how easy it is to collect more than one pen😃. I told myself I only need one fountain pen and now I have 4😃. I also have my eye on a few others🌸. Now, I’m telling myself I should only have 6 fountain pens, yet I think maybe 8 would be fun🤗 I grew up in PA, in the North Hills area. Lived in PA for 22 years then moved to North Carolina, lived there for 17 years. Now I live in Tennessee and have been here for over twenty years😃. I love the weather of the south🤗. God Bless You🙏🏻. Till next time!🌸

Many have asked the same. I choose to makes this a visual tour. All these pens I have reviewed in separate videos. I do mention the model. Yes, it may take some effort on viewer's part to find a specific pen. Enjoy the journey.

Please reconsider. Yes, I get it there are full reviews of all these pens. Yes, I am going to go and check out the full review. But if I don't know the brand and model of the pen the viewer has to go through your entire library, switching back and forth from there to this video to find the full video of a pen where you sparked the viewer's interest here.Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Next time make it a point to name the pens and model numbers CONSISTENTLY as you started rambling about 5 mins in and mentioned some names in passing in a mumble. I really enjoyed this but it was a lousy job.

Hi Chris! Love your collection. I have collected a few of these inexpensive Chinese pens and I love writing with them! I’m curious about the pocket pen in this video. (6th from the left) you did not mention the name of it and I couldn’t find it anywhere on google search. Great video btw!
