Oh, in terms of personal qualities, Xiang Yu is the superior man with the more romantic story. Xiang Yu: Peerless Warrior. Super strong. Very tall even by today's standards (he was 6'2 or 6'3 in a world and age where most men are lucky to get 5') Young and handsome. Had a cool birthmark on his eyes that made it look like one of them had double-pupils. Basically the Jordan of Warrior-Kings. Actually meant and honored his promises, and had genuine friends and comrades willing to die with him. Had a cool horse. Had a legendary beauty for a consort. Descendant of a noble warrior family. Actually led the bulk of the rebellion that destroyed the Qin Dynasty. Liu Bang: Peasant. Village trickster. Became a rebel because he was late for work and decided banditry was better than execution for a few hours of sleep. Super charming but absolutely should not be trusted. Willing to sacrifice anyone for his own benefit. Betrayed all his friends. Xiang Yu and Han Xin included. Betrayed his wife. His wife probably single-handedly held women back in China due to being such an odiously cruel and corrupt empress-dowager that the archetype she started carried on for almost 3000 years. To Liu Bang's credit, his rule might have been better for peasants than Xiang Yu's. Xiang Yu was a true martial aristocrat. A knight-general. Liu Bang actually made reforms that made life better for the commoners and eased a lot of the harshness brought about by the previous dynasty.

I saw the whole historical drama of Kingdoms of Chu VS Han after the Qin empire fell. It was very dramatic and Xiang Yu was the "never give up". Lu Matong was born from the same village Xiangyu was from and his last words to him were "Since I'll die today, I'll let my comrade have the reward". Also, Lu Matong used to be commander under Xiangyu forces.

In Chinese history, Xiang Yu is the only one who is referred to as the Overlord or the Hegemon-King (霸王). Lu Bu's battle record was hardly impressive in official Chinese history. But Xiang Yu had personally slayed 100+ soldiers in more than one battle, recorded by multiple credible ancient historians. Xiang Yu may not be the best general overall, but he is often considered the strongest warrior in ancient China. And the dude was only 25 when he led around 50K men and won against 400K Qin forces in the Battle of Julu. He died at 30.

@@gameanimeking I wouldn’t say it was corruption of “generals and courtiers”. The biggest contributor to fall of Qin are Zhao Gao and Li Si, who change the Qin Shi Huang’s decree and made his beloved first born son Fu Su into suicide, and make the spoiled brat Huhai the heir to the throne. If Fu Su would succeed Qin Shi Huang as he has visioned, history will be very different. He was recorded as a just and sincere person who was surrounded by competent scholars and generals that were devote to his cause. He was attributed of writing many letters to his father to ask him pardon Confucius scholars. And Qin Shi Huang, despite being enraged by his son’s letter, still make him the crowned prince regardless. The monarchy is everything but corrupted, it is a shame that Qin Shi Huang’s vision was never followed through. Ironically the only reason that Fu Su would commit the suicide as instructed is that he is a devout follower of Confucius. His followers are suspicious of the forged letter, but failed to convince him. His last words “父而賜子死,尚安復請” can be roughly translated as “if a father wishes the death of his son, what more should be asked”.

I think MasterofRoflness missed the best part. There is a chinese idiom that stemmed from this event, called *四面楚歌* meaning "surrounded on 4 sides by the songs of Chu" Xiang Yu fled with his men to the camp, surrounded by Han soldiers. The Han Soldiers under Liu Bang then started *SINGING SONGS AND POETRY* from the state of CHU (Xiang Yu and most of his men were from Chu since they had practically executed every prisoner in their hands unlike Liu Bang). The Chu soldiers felt homesick and thought that since the Han soldiers were singing their song, that it must be that Chu had fallen (this in fact had not happened). Fearing for their families, they started surrendering, Chu Officers were unable to stop them, in the end, Xiang Yu gave up on disclipining the soldiers and the main Chu force collapsed. Then an idiom came about literally flexing this event, 四面楚歌, it usually means a situation is hopeless, or an army is surrounded

By the way, this man was a tactical genius who used his unrivaled personal strength as an advantage. Unlike the usual perception of Xiang Yu being a brawn-over-brains person, he had been extremely successful in all his campaigns prior to this battle, though in the battles his central homeland force was whittled down by the constant bloodshed. He would use his personal force to provide morale for the army or even tear out an opening in the opponent’s formation, then grasping that chance to shatter the opposing army. This is named “the inclination strategy” and barely repeated in Chinese history due to better technology later outweighing one man’s ability in war.

Xiang Yu was an amazing battlefield tactician and a valiant commander on top of being a heaven-blessed warrior. His problem is his inability to gather or recognize men of equal or better caliber or heed their advice when around. Everything in Xiang's army revolved around his own qualities. While Liu Bang gathered men of much greater talent than himself and bound them in loyalty and friendship through charm and personality. Xiang Yu was also sensitive to the topic of his own personal honor, and that made him vulnerable to utter scoundrels like Liu Bang.

Xiang Yu has to be the coolest 'loser' even recorded in history with Sasaki Kojiro as the second close, and he was probably the earliest example of anti-hero. Not surprise why Chinese poets love him. He might lose to Liu Bang but goddamn if he didn't leave one hell of an impression.
@willvan7685
@willvan7685 Жыл бұрын
Isn't Kojiro's actual existence heavily scrutinised? I'm asking because I think I saw something about how he was quite literally made up to be Musashi's rival. "There is no evidence he even lived. The name Sasaki Kojiro appears for the first time in 18th century Bunraku plays. Musashi himself never mentions Kojiro or the duel in his writings." According to someone on Quora, this duel DID happen, but the person he was dueling was an unnamed swordsman referred to as Ganryu for his fighting style, the latter of which is corroborated by Kojiro's page on wikipedia, however his wikipedia page seems to have... a lot of red flags in terms of sources and citations.

They're both interesting in their own way, but I must say Xiang Yu's life is a goddamn amazing story. Liu Bang might be the founder of the dynasty that laid major foundation for Imperial China, yet he was remembered as a conniving scoundrel who mercilessly and dishonorably put his kingmakers to death. Despite that, we can't deny that Liu Bang had the most important skill of a leader: delegation. Meanwhile, Xiang Yu became some sort of mythical folk hero who is subjected to many romances (for a 'loser', Xiang Yu's deeds were rather well documented IMO) and endless debates whether he is a hero or villain. While he is the loser in history, his force of personality still echoed thousands years later. Not an easy feat for a person to achieve, and considering Xiang Yu could probably ended up as a footnote in Liu Bang's pages since winners write history, it's very impressive.

However after the war over, he was excecuted by the empress without even a little resistance LMAO. That is what most of the history be like I think, heroes fight like legend, and die like a comedy.

Xiang Yu was an absolute unit, however he was never suitable to be a ruler. During the War on Qin, Liu Bang was the first of the rebel forces to enter the capital of Qin, he accepted the plea of surrender from the final Qin Emperor, spared him, and all the citizens in the capital. He then simplified the endlessly complicated laws of the legalist Qin to three simple rules: murderers must die; thieves and assaulters must pay their price. His right hand man, Xiao He, took all the governmental records in order to quickly re-establish peace and stability to the state of Qin. Xiang Yu later came, killed the former Qin Emperor (who already surrendered, might I remind you), slaughtered countless citizens and burnt the entire capital. It was such a devastating fire, historic records say that the city burned for 3 months (a bit questionable, likelier time being somewhere between 3 days to 1 week). This fire not only destroyed a gigantic city, but also the countless books that were within. Qin Shi Huang (the first emperor) once decreed that “the sacred book of the east” and the “book of poems” must not be spread outside of the royal library, and demanded all of the Chinese people in his time to burn their copies of the books. These books were some of the greatest works of China, encompassing philosophy, political sciences, history, moral etc. By burning the capital of Qin, he destroyed the last copy of “the sacred book of the east” and the “book of poems”. Which is a real shame.

Ah yes... The Chu-Han Contention. The later betrayal of Liu Bang/Emperor Gaozu against the one who truly built his empire, Han Xin, was real treacherous if you go and read it up. Also, there's this saying in Chinese called "四面楚歌", "The Four Walls of the Song of Chu" in direct translation. So what was reported was that during the Battle of Gaixia, Xiang Yu was on the back foot after losing battles after battles and by the time that he was trapped in there, he had lost about 100,000 men already and had only 100,000 men against Han's 300,000 strong army. Whilst being besieged by all sides with Liu Bang, Han Xin and Peng Yue taking each sides, Chu forces were surrounded and with constant prodding attacks, Chu lost more men and the longer the siege, the lesser supplies they had and morale dropped. Han Xin felt that it wasn't worth it to send men in and attack the walls and throw more men thus he sent out notes to every soldier to sing as loudly, in unison, songs from the state of Chu during the middle of the night. At the strike of midnight, the whole Han army that surrounded Gaixia started singing those songs and it hits deep into the valley and it shook Xiang Yu's camp as it gave them the feeling of home and with the fatigue kicking in due to the lack of sleep from the loud singing, many started to feel paranoia kicking in that they had lost their homeland and started to panic, thinking of ways to defect. Some were executed for defection and a riot nearly broke out at the gates but soon, the writing was on the wall as more and more troops wanted to break out and surrender. Xiang Yu had enough of it and lost control of the situation and many did in fact defect towards the Han.

After Xiang Yu's death, Western Chu surrendered and China was united under Liu Bang's rule, marking the victory of the Han dynasty.
