If someone's interested: The picture of a cat in the beginning and on 0:47 is not of Sam but of Simon who served on the British HMS Amethyst. Simon was picked up undernourished in 1948 by a crew member in docks of Hong Kong and has been smuggled aboard. He quickly won over hearts of the crew and officers by catching rats and leaving them as "presents" in sailor's beds. He also slept in a captain's cap so his level of authority on the ship leaves no questions. In 1948 the ship's commander changed. The new commander - Lieutenant Commander Bernard Skinner also took an immediate liking to Simon. Then when HMS Amethyst was traveling up the Yangtze River (to replace HMS Consort) halfway up the river they were attacked by a PLA field gun battery, an event which became known as the "Amethyst Incident". One of the rounds hit the captain's cabin seriously wounding Simon, Skinner however did not survive and passed from his wounds soon after the attack. Badly wounded Simon crawled on deck and was rushed to medical bay where surviving medics treated his burns and removed shrapnel from his body. Nobody expected Simon to survive the night. However, soon they were reminded that his level of authority aboard Amethyst leaves no questions. Simon survived and after a period of recovery returned to catching rats, in spite of the indifference he faced from Lieutenant Commander John Kerans - the new captain. After the incident Simon became a celebrity and was presented with a Dickin Medal, a Blue Cross and Naval General Service Medal. He was also awarded the rank of "Able Seacat" after disposing of a very vicious rat who the crew nicknamed "Mao Tse-tung". He had so many letters written to him that Lt. Stewart Hett was appointed as "Cat Officer" to deal with them. On their way back home Simon was presented with honour at every stop and recieved special welcome at Plymoth in November when the ship has returned. Like all animals entering UK Simon was subject to quarantine regulations and was sent to an animal centre in Surrey. Unfortunately Simon's level of authority was only present aboard HMS Amethyst and after contracting a virus whilst in quarantine, despite his and the staff's efforts to save his life, Simon passed away on November 28 in 1949 from a complication of the viral infection caused by his war wounds. He was only 2 years old. The entire crew of HMS Amethyst and hundreds of other people attended his funeral at Ilford Animal Cemetery in East London. The following citation accompanied the Amethyst Campaign ribbon: For distinguished and meritorious service. Single-handedly and unarmed stalk down and destroy "Mao Tse-tung" a rat guilty of raiding food supplies which were critically short. Be it further known that from April 22 to August 4, you did rid HMS Amethyst of pestilence and vermin, with unrelenting faithfulness. As of today Simon is the only cat to recieve the Dickin Medal.

Bismarck's Oscar ending up on Ark Royal has me flabbergasted. In the "Battle" that Bismarck was sunk on, she suffered a torpedo hit which disabled her steering, forcing her to go in circles, unable to flee. Now here's the kicker. The torpedo that the Bismarck was hit with came from a plane. A plane that was launched from Ark Royal. That's some sick twist of fate that Oscar ends up on a ship that's directly responsible for sinking his original owner.
