Honestly, you need to take him to Flushing, Queens. Amazing, amazing food but some of the smaller places have menus in Chinese only, and no one there speaks English. I wish I had a guide. I can point to tasty looking things but I'm afraid to just order randomly because I might get crispy fried intestines or pork kidney.

Having tea with my grandpa, one of the greatest pleasures in life. Grandma's cooking, right there too. Just sharing a meal with them. Simple things that bring such joyous memories.

not Chinese in this lifetime, but living in NYC (Brooklyn specifically) I am able to indulge my love of authentic Asian cuisines developed while stationed in the Pacific in the mid 1970s. Chinese, Japanese< Korean, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Fill[pino all healthy and delicious cuisines. I had the great good fortune to be invited into many homes as a friend.

@averylfong4843

Not really if it doesn't come with a sauce meant for it! Usually stuff like siew mai, etc have enough flavour on their own. Bready things like cha siew bao definitely not. You might get a chilli sauce with har gao (I think it's somewhat normal in Singapore at least), and you'll get that special soy sauce with the cheung fun rice rolls, and likely black vinegar and ginger strips with xiao long bao, but it depends on the individual dish. You COULD pour some soy sauce in a small dish, pick something up with chopsticks and dip it lightly in it and not be TOO weird, but it's usually best to enjoy the food as the chef prepared it. You can always remark about whether it's good or not, like Grandpa here says the har gao isn't good (he's right it shouldn't fall apart like that), but the daan tat and ngau cheung were good. Never pour table soy sauce direct from the spout over food, though, that's rude!
@americanmade6996
@americanmade6996 Жыл бұрын
Dim sum will rarely need additional salt or soy sauce but table sauces, including chili oil, hoisin sauce, mustard (be careful with that!), or vinegar are very common.

Hello again, you + your grandfather's energy are very heartwarming. This was a very Dim Sum Educational Etiquette Video, w/Family + your friend added that little something that brought a smile. I love the story of the King's tea hand gesture, and you all seemed to dine like kings, with the very delicious food, and hearing the various pronunciations, and your grandpa will always like home made over any restaurant, it's just a fact.(like the original coke taste, to the new recipe). It was great spending time with you both again, on to the next adventure! Grandpa did look 🤩"Hollywood" in those shades + yet carried himself like a humble King😍, educating anyone watching♨️. 🙏💕🌎♨️🥢🥢🥢✨
