What can we add if not meat? Any vegetables that can go with this herbs?
@ChineseHerbalPantry2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Mrs L, for most recipes here, if you are vegetarian, you don't have to substitute meat with anything else. This is because most the herbs I chose here are quite flavourful. Though some are subtle, by the time you combine them or add some goji berries and a couple of red dates, I find they are quite tasty to drink. If you want to more flavours, you can often add mushroom, corns or carrots. Hope the above helps!

Thanks for the informative video, dear Shirley. May I know what is the function of ginger in this chinese herb soup ? Can I skip ginger ?
@ChineseHerbalPantry Жыл бұрын
Hi there, one basic function of ginger, merely for cooking purpose, is to get rid of the gamey flavour of the meat. The second function is, ginger can 'warm our TCM Spleen and Stomach', meaning to support our digestion. So adding ginger is to help with the digestion of the herbs, especially good for people who have weaker digestion or people who is 'colder' in nature. Having said that, if you are someone who is very prone to 'heat signs' and even a couple of slices of ginger can trigger that, then you can skip the ginger. Or if you simply don't like ginger, you can skip it too. It is ok for this soup, other herbs will do the work.

@ChineseHerbalPantry3 жыл бұрын
Hi @James, I am sorry for the late reply. I didn't see your comment until now. Sorry to hear that you are suffering from mouth ulcers. Usually, mouth ulcers are caused by 'heat'. Please note this is Chinese Medicine theories, and not based on western medicine. Yet it could be caused by many other factors too, the tips here are if it is caused by heat, if you are unsure, please check with your local Chinese Medicine practitioners. So, assuming it is caused by 'Heat', please make sure you are sleeping well and sleeping early, reducing stress and anxiety. Please avoid spicy or fried food or food that is 'heaty' or 'warming' according to Chinese Medicine theories. I have a post on Instagram that gave a few examples of 'heaty' food, please see the link below. instagram.com/p/CLlkiaHAjgV/? One last note, there is a possibility that your mouth ulcers are caused by grinding your teeth too much and it starts rubbing to the mucous membrane inside your mouth. It may be something to look into too. Please check with your dentist. Hope the above helps. Please take good care!
@jameshue552 жыл бұрын
@@ChineseHerbalPantry Thanks Shirley, just out of interest,how do the other cultures overcome "heatiness" especially those curry consuming ones. I also understand they are meat loving and not heavy vege consumers unlike the Eastern Asian that practises the concept of Yin & Yang in their diet.
@ChineseHerbalPantry2 жыл бұрын
@James, it is a very good question. Working as a pharmacist myself in Australia, we usually recommend symptomatic relief medications. For example, if patient comes in with acne, there is acne cream. If constipation, there are laxatives. If mouth ulcers, there is anti inflammation cream. Unfortunately, these symptoms are not treated as a 'whole' like the patten we know as the 'heatiness' in Chinese medicine. So, these symptoms tend to come back if we are not changing our eating habits or try to resolve the underlying cause ( 'heat').

Great video! Should this soup be eaten at certain times of year? To coincide with seasonal changes? Or is it good to eat year round? What are the Chinese names for the 4 ingredients? Also, how do you feel about adding huang qi to the recipe? (A 5th minister? 😉)
@ChineseHerbalPantry3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Kaisersoce07, as I mentioned in the video, since these four herbs are all neutral, so generally speaking this soup is ok for year around as it is not cooling or warming. There are two herbs in this recipe help to clear dampness, so if the weather is damp (rainy), it is a good time to drink this soup too. As for the Chinese names of the herbs, you can check them in the description box and they show on the screen when I explained each herb too. Ha, 5th minister! This recipe is 'tightly' and masterfully formulated, adding Huang Qi will offset the 'neutral' property. This is because Huang Qi is slightly warm. Yet, if you prefer, want another Qi tonic and your body can take Huang Qi, yeah, you can add.

Hi, i would like to seek for your advice pls. I boiled the cleaned dried herbs to make this soup. But black powder was found to be floating in the water during the boiling process. Not sure why, what was it. Is it considered safe to drink? Could it be possibly the spore of Fuling? or the skin peeled off from the brown lotus seeds? Thank U.
@ChineseHerbalPantry9 ай бұрын
@laychoon7828, umm..... it is really hard to tell as I don't know the herbs you purchased. Having said that, if you are using the brwon lotus seeds, it is likely is due to the peel of the lotus seeds. Sometimes the Qain Shi (Euryale seeds) may have that too. But they not necessarily is powdery, usually I can use the peel reasonably clearly. But it also depends on the batch of herbs. If you are concern, what you can do is to use a small amount of brown lotus seeds to cook separate in water, and test it to see if there is the black powder again.

HI @Laurie, welcome to this community! Hope you are enjoying learning more about Chinese herbs here. Traditionally, we don't eat the herbs after cooking in soup. We drink the soup as most nutrients should be already in the soup. Many of these herbs are not palatable, except some limited ones, eg goji berries. In this soup, your mother can eat the two seeds. As for the Chinese yam, unless you cook with the fresh yum, but the dried Chinese yam is not palatable too. Hi @Sophie, ha I see! I understand your 'concern', if I am a good eater too! The thing about this soup is, it strengthen the TCM Spleen. If someone who is already lack of appetite, this soup may increase appetite. If it someone who is already eating well, it is not necessary will increase the appetite more, as supporting the TCM Spleen is also about supporting the digestion. When the digestion is good, you absorb the nutrients more appropriately , and you will feel the fullness instead of feeling hungry all the times - this itself is actually a 'healthier' Spleen. @Anna, I am sorry to hear. Where do you live? Is there a Chinatown where you live? Usually there should be a herbal shop in Chinatown. Or many Chinese grocery stores would sell the herbs I mentioned in this video.

@@annapsom.9 I am sorry to hear you live so far away from the capital city. Yet, I really appreciate and admire you taking the interest and effort to learn more about Chinese herbs! I think you are the first follower who wrote to me that is from Slovakia! 😊 I hope somehow one day, there will be a Asian grocery shop near you and that you can get the herbs. Or maybe try online store if you can find one? All the very best and please don't give up!
