@@YugoslavGamer I could only find the Italian Army's official history (it's in Italian). Basically, in case of an Axis invasion Yugoslavia and Greece planned a joint offensive against Italian-controlled Albania, in order to set up a strong front in the Balkans. When that invasion began, a Yugoslavian army attacked, but was held at bay by the Italians (they expected such a move, so they were well prepared to meet it. Greece didn't push much either.) A few days into the campaign, Italian intelligence broke the Yugoslavian military codes and issued fake orders to halt and retreat, with the correct key. The confusion this created stalled the Yugoslavians for a day, the Italians then counterattacked together with German units which had in the meantime arrived in the area, and that was that.

The thing is Shu-Han cannot compete with the Cao-Wei that has 3-4 times bigger territory than them, they don't have the resource and the demography, to survive they had to invade the central plains, or at least Chang An. An interesting theory: Sima Yi knew that Zhuge Liang was just bluffing, and yet he pretended to be scared and ordered the retreat. Sima Yi was aware that if he killed Zhuge Liang, who was the biggest threat to Wei, the Wei imperial court would no longer need the Sima clan and they would be removed from power. And it seems Zhuge Liang was well aware of Sima Yi's concerns too.

​@@popolmengompol not sure myself, though there was an Extra Credits video on it (back when that channel was good). Tokugawa met Shingen in the field like a goober, got his army reduced from a few thousand down to a half dozen retainers and agents. Takeda showed up believing he'd finally caught Tokugawa, but found the fort with it's gates cast open and every brazier lit, as if the place was fully staffed. According to E.C. they then performed some small, but vicious, sally that razed hell among Takeda ranks before withdrawing back inside. This was supposedly enough to convince Takeda that they'd fully prepared for siege in anticipation of Oda reinforcement. I think it was apart of that same campaign that Shingen was shot and killed outside another fortress, leaving the clan in the less capable hands of his son; though I may be totally talking out my ass, it's been a bit since I brushed up on that history. 😂

​@@kylerees9242Tokugawa's ploy did work, but just enough to halt Shingen's forces, the rest was up to luck. He actually fell in a deadly sickness during the siege, and they were forced to retreat. Per Shingen's deathwish, his death was to be keep a secret for long enough for his clan to reorganize. His son wasn't actually incompetent, it's just that he didn't live up to his father's name. He was no more than a puppet in the hand of Shingen's generals.

It was the aftermath of the battle of Mikatagahara where after a crushing defeat Tokugawa was left with about 10 men and had to retreat to the fortress of Hamamatsu where with the help of the shinobi Hattori Hanzo let the gates of the fortress open meanwhile the shinobis of Hanzo recked havoc among the Takeda vanguard thus convincing them that another army was waiting for them inside the fortress, this strategy is called “strategy of the empty fortress” and fooled the takeda into a retreat that saved Tokugawa

It remains debatable since some people believe Sima Yi knew the city was empty, but retreated anyway cause he wanted Zhuge Liang to be alive. Sima wasn't aiming for Shu's defeat since he's Wei's main general. Should Shu be gone, he would be a goner too. History played out on Sima's side, through his pavement, his son became the emperor of Jin dynasty, while his opponent Zhuge Liang hard-worked to death. However, since later dynasties, starting Tang, need its generals to be loyal, they praised a lot of Zhuge, leaving the true winner of the duel a loser on pages.

@@EyePatchGuy88 I wouldn't blame too much on Sima Yan since the chaos began in his son's reign, however, he was to "blame" for trying to create another Zhou Dynasty, which was politically equivalent to Europe's middle ages, a feudal system run on families/houses. Since China went through feudal once already, replacing the family bond(Zhou Dynasty, feudalism) with cold-blooded scheming oppression(Qin Dynasty, legalism), and it worked so well with people believing unification is a good thing, only natural that they would do the same thing again. Then again, blaming a man wanting his house to be strong while not being willing to bring the hammer down on everyone? Doesn't seem fair tho.

1378 Years later, during the Sengoku Jidai after the Tokugawa Army were crushed by the Takeda Army and retreated to the town of Hamamatsu with a astounding Remnants of 5 Men. Tokugawa ordered the town braziers to be lit and have one of his remaining retainers to open the gate and beat the war drums, the Takeda Army thinks it's a trap and retreated, turning a Takeda Dominating Victory into a Decent Victory as if the Takeda attacked the Tokugawa Clan would have been destroyed.

Zhuge Liang might be the most brilliant general in Chinese history. He's outrun millions of enemy soldiers while supporting 100 thousand refugees, burned down an entire city to commit decisive victories via arson, did... this. Literally played a prank Sima Yi, his greatest rival (who could oppose him) by sending him a maid outfit (Sima returned the gesture), was recruited because an agressive drunk man almost burned his house down, literally died from overwork, and HE LITERALLY MAD FOUR COPIES OF HIMSELF with illusion tactics and caused the opposing army to be defeated (all of these were when he was outnumbered like 7 to 1). 4 years later when a battle began outside a town the general made someone dress up as him and that literally scared every attacking soldier to run for their lives Weakest Chinese General Hang on, I just remembered more Plucked out corrupt advisors and scheme servants so easily, just for the emperor to pardon them because of bribary (court culture moment) Literally made an ally general (he was going to be a problem later on, and he already was because he was scheming to declare basically war on the two allies) RAGEQUIT from life (he literally had a heart attack from him) and sent soldiers to laugh at him Also foiled this generals plans THREE TIMES in rapid succession Pretended to be a priest that could command the wind (they needed right direction of wind for the battle of Red Cliffs) and actually made the right wind appear, making people think he was a wizard (he was just a good weather forecaster) Used straw dummies, put them on a ship, sent them to the enemy coastline to steal arrows (the archers fired because there was a fog, and the straw soaked up the arrows) and stole 20 thousand in a single night Pacified a rebellion by uh doing this 'captures opposing rebellion leader in trap' 'lets him go' 'captures again 'lets him go 'captures again via trap 'lets him go' 'captures his queen via ambush with rice fields' 'lets her go' 'captures him AGAIN' 'lets him go' 'rebellion relocates to places with advanced armor and basically africa being hot' 'Liang's soldiers don't know how to properly fight, still outsmarts enemies by trapping them in a boulder clearing' 'captures leader AGAIN with the queen' 'leader admits defeat, and rules over the land peacefully ever after' I read too much Three Kingdoms

There is a defensive argument upon why Sima Yi ordered his whole army back away, even if he might have already recognised Zhuge Liang had absolutely no actual defence against him: Sima Yi, appointed by the former emperor of Wei as one of the supportive ministers, to support the new emperor who was his son, had an obvious amount of power and influences among the court at that time, which means, if he on his own had killed Zhuge Liang which was the main rival of Wei, he and his family must have been eventually killed by the emperor, due to that he just had made his own exploit covered his lord (功高蓋主). Yeah the "Romance of Three kingdoms" isn't historically accurate. The writer, Luo Guanzhong was a big Shu fanboy. Shu was depicted as the protagonist, while Wei was depicted as the antagonist, and Wu was depicted as something in between.

Fun fact There is actually a theory for the main reason Sima Yi ordered the retreat. It was not because he worried about the ambush by Zhuge Liang (Sima Yi actually brought a huge army) but because if he attacked and managed to kill Zhuge Liang then he would be the only capable strategist in the whole 3 kingdoms. Thus the Emperor of Wei might issue an order to get him assassinated because he would be the biggest threat to the throne

Another reason why Zhuge Liang was the most badass commander in Chinese history: When he died on another Northern Expedition, Sima Yi heard the news and drew his army out to attack Zhuge Liang’s camp. When his troops were ambushed by the Shu soldiers, they carried out a wooden carving of Zhuge Liang for Sima Yi to see. Not able to tell it was a fake, Sima Yi thought it was the real Zhuge Liang and retreated.
