Today we visited Tsing Yi Street, a famous Chinese street in KL, Malaysia. We wandered around, bought local fruits, and enjoyed delicious street food. My sister especially loved the claypot chicken, and we had a memorable night with family.
00:20 brief intro

6:15 durian

@@oldwatchma re: Malaysia exploration completion rate 1%... Don't worry, take your time to taste Malaysian food. Not only we have Malay, Chinese and Indian culinary here but each state in Malaysia have their own special food. We even have more than 20 types of popular durian varieties. We have Japanese youtuber couple (Jimmy ang iChang) from channel iChang RM who have been staying here for nearly 2 years but still discovering new food that they like. e even gave iChang the title 'Durian Queen' because she's an expert on durian...

if the food is not finished, for example asam pedas claypot, you can ask for it to be packed to take home... that's the custom of Malaysians because you've already paid for everything, so if you haven't finished eating you can ask for it to be packed, that's if you want it to be packed.. .

7:30 The RM27 durian is the original durian, which we call Durian Kampung (literally translates to Village Origin Durian). Yeah, it is a mix of bitter & sweet. Locals love this kind of Durian as well. The others are durian that bred through research & genetically modified, just like most of our food these days. The sellers are not purposely scamming you. It is what it is. They have to bear the cost as well, but I agree, almost everything sold in Petaling Street are more expensive than somewhere else. Ask locals though... 12:45 it is Malaysian dish and popular in the southern part of Malaysia like Malacca & Johor. Each states has their own recipe as well even for the same dish. It is called Asam Pedas (spicy & sour). Normally locals eat fish based Asam Pedas rather than chicken..

I think you prefer sweet food. You better go to Kelantan because the food in Kelantan is a lot of sweet. I prefer durian that has a bitter and slightly sweet taste. That is the type of durian kampung and durian i.o.i or 1.0.1 (one O one). In Malaysia there are many durian flavors such as Musang King durian, Black Torn durian, D24 durian, Red Prawn durian, durian 1.0.1 and many more.

Best to ask the durian seller the types of durian that you want, if you do not like the bitter taste, you can tell the seller to get you durian with sweeter taste. but makesure you ask for the price too, the sweet ones are normally pricier 😊 I suggest you go to SS2, Petaling Jaya to eat durian, they have more varieties that you can try.

Usually you can tell them the type of taste you like (bitter, sweet?) so they can recommend the type of durian species more towards your likings. Rm 18 should be the Durian Kampung which is like what Fiona said, they are random and it can be a hit or miss (good or bad or anything in between). It also depends on the durian sellers, its more like the quality not the ediblelity of the fruit. If its not edible, I think most durian sellers will replace it for you but if its lower quality, it is based on luck for Durian Kampung. Most people prefers bitter flavour I think so you got lucky but unfortunately, it doesn't suits your taste or your taste have not evolved to that level yet hahaha. The Musang King is the widely popular ones but I feel its too commercial hence the price tag is also very high and they at this point of time they can go to Rm 38 per kilo for Grade A ones and there are some lower Grade ones as well for cheaper price (Grade B, C, etc). Usually the quality of non Kampung Durian is more stable but its also depends which state or ochard or even tree this fruit is from. Usually good ochards are able to produce more consistent flavour quality due to experience of growing the fruit over the generations and years of knowledge. Love your sister's reaction when seeing the claypot LOL ... her excitement so real :) Anyway, if you guys are sharing can ask for extra empty plates/bowls and cutleries (spoons, etc). Due to Malaysia mixed culture, a lot of our ways of life and especially food are influencing each other. I think Asam Pedas is local Malay style but adding into Claypot is chinese style. The Beef Noodle is also chinese influenced dish as well but it has been modified a bit as well hence the soup taste a bit different that the one sold in chinese stalls. There are some Halal Chinese food, if you are able to find those will be more authentic but I believe some has been influenced as well by other cultures. Even those are not really much influence, I think you guys may find it a bit different as from what I know the Chinese Malaysians here mostly ancestors are from South and South Eastern China (Eg: Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Fuzhou, etc) which the flavour is very different than North China and maybe some difference with South Western China (Yunnan). Maybe I should try check out some of you guys videos later to know more deeper about Food in Yunnan :)

The dish your sister had called Asam Pedas,it is a true Malaysian dish,if she miss the taste, she can just buy Maggie(instant noodle)Asam pedas, but of course the taste isnt kick in like original 😂,shes right about the price, since petaling street/chinatown is major tourist attraction, the price wont be cheap,u can try bring your family to SS2 petaling jaya durian buffet,Jalan Alor durian stall(quite a good place for u to enjoy food here,u can try the ramly burger as well, kinda like trend tourist who visited definitely try the burger/during king TTDI..malay indonesian filipinos kinda same,so expect to see more people mistook your sister to look like any of us here😂

7:05 - RM 18.00/kg - DURIAN KAMPUNG KAWEN. If DURIAN KAMPUNG, price below RM 12.00/kg & some place can get RM 8.00/kg - local & cheaper, the taste some bitter + sweet & creamy, very special taste. not like DURIAN MUSANG KING, 1 taste + expensive haha 9:34 ASAM PEDAS AYAM (Chicken asam pedas = spicy + sour) eat with rice. ASAM PEDAS are our local menu especially in Melaka & Johor, every stall have & every house, every event must have "asam pedas" (all can cook asam pedas - fish / meat / chicken). its not same taste from one stall to others stall. when people ask us, Melaka people, which place the best asam pedas. sure we answer - "asam pedas mak saya" (my mum cook) hahaha
