Kung Hei Fat Choi 恭喜發財 !
Chinese New Year, or more internationally known as Lunar New Year, is considered one of the most essential celebrations among cultures in China, Vietnam, Korea, and other Southeast and East Asian countries. According to most people, they celebrate this New Year multiple times, not just a single day.
The Lunar New Year usually begins on the 10th of February, which most Asian people will call the year of the dragon. Most Chinese people call this new year the spring festival, or “Chunjié” in Mandarin. Other Asian countries, such as Korea, call this "seollal," while in Vietnam, it is referred to as "tet.".
Every country has a different Lunar New Year celebration, with different dishes and customs that serve as symbols for wealth, success, and unity. Speaking of tradition, houses are carefully purified prior to the start of the Lunar New Year in order to clear out any undesirable spirits that may have gathered. Additionally, cleaning is intended to make space for luck and compassion.
Some people display red paper and banners with calligraphic texts wishing people success and good health. Children even receive money envelopes from elders. Lunar New Year foods are mostly glutinous rice-based meals because they represent unity.
