*"You are a western spy, we are taking you in for questioning. Do not resist, you are a western spy!"* Knew someone that knew someone who worked with [internal security] and when we'd visit they'd tell me all about how they'd fuck people over like that. If the government decided you were a criminal, you were a criminal. They didn't ask you, they told you. You just had to accept that and until you did they'd never release you - but if you did that would remain as a black mark against you for your entire life. @Trok kune Fake and gay lies, the course we see *every single* Socialist state take is the exact, necessary course it can only take. The nature of Communism is such that it requires increasing degrees of authoritarianism to the point of total control. The end-state of Communism is a self-enforcing superstate of willing, indoctrinated slaves. Read Marx and Engels. @1972hattrick See: The Soviet Union See: China See: North Korea See: Albania See: Yugoslavia See: Venezuela See: Pick your failure It's not that "real Communism" hasn't been tried or hasn't worked out, it's that it has but reds don't have the intellectual honesty to admit it. It's an extremely simple question: with no economic incentive how do you get people to work necessary but horrible jobs nobody wants to work? The only way you can do that is to force them. The fundamental ideas of Communism cannot possibly work without a totalitarian state directing labor, directing politics and directing the personal lives of the people.

Not only that but my friend and this family moved from Sweden to Russia during that time nobody cared about them like China seems to do today, so no, China turns that "harassing" stuff to 11.

I lived in China from 2003- 2010. I got some useful information early on. I had a friend who was knowledgeable. He told me to always rent an apartment in an Army directory area. That is close by an army base essentially, the area surrounding is called an army directorid Area. The Police are scared of Army guys. Army guys have more power than police. The police are less likely to bother you in this area when you are a foreigner because the police are scared if they bother the wrong foreigner he may have powerful connections with someone in the Army. So they are reluctant to bother someone in one of these areas, it might mean the end of their career if they bother the wrong foreigner. So I only lived near Army bases. I never even registered at a police station for the first 4 years I lived there, and no police ever bothered me. I moved a couple of times. But finally I had to register at a police station because of an incident in my apartment block. A woman had fallen off the balcony in the apartment above me. I was on the 20th floor. So obviously she died. I came home 1 day and knew straight away the guy walking in my direction was a plain closed police. He approached me in the lobby, and asked was I at home last night. I said yes. He then asked could he ask more questions in My apartment and produced identification saying he was a detective. We went to my apartment and the basic premise of the questions was he was trying to establish weather the woman fell accidentally, or more to what he was suggesting to me was that her husband threw her off the balcony. He asked did I hear them fight etc. Did I hear the incident happen etc. I stated No to all this as this was the truth I had no idea about the incident, and heard nothing. He was friendly and reasonable, but of course I was on edge being questioned by a detective. Once he established I knew nothing about the incident he left and said good bye and thanked me for my assistance. He also questioned me about my personal situation and what I was doing in China etc. I did not produce my police registration card but he did ask for it. I just said I didn't have it and didn't elaborate. The next day I went to the police station and applied for a foreigner police registration card. And low and behold 3 days Later I get a knock at my door at 1am. They always come late at night. I swear its an intimidation tactic. These were low level police extremely rude, but happy top portray themselves as authority figure that could crush you like a grape if they chose. Unbelievable like 4 of them just push there way into my apartment and they are smoking as well. Can you imagine just pushing your way into someone's house with a smoke in your gob. I told them get out if you are going to smoke don't bring cigarettes into my house. They didn't listen just kept smoking. Such complete assholes. I showed them my registration card that I luckily now had. They tried intimidating me for about 10 minutes saying that I had been here for 4 years and only just registered because I had to produce my passport for them so they knew I only just registered. I just said so what? What do you want? I've shown you my registration now please leave. They just laughed and said OK no problem and left. They tried to intimidate me but I just said if there is anything else you want please say so otherwise leave please. They kept on coming back every month with the same dog and pony show. Always at like 1am. But when they came back I wouldn't open my outer steel security door I just passed my passport and registration card through 1 of the gaps in the outer steel door. They always asked me to open the door. I always told them No. Usually they would ask a couple of times and I just told them you have my passport, you have my police station registration card, If you need anything else please tell me what it is you want? They were always angry with me for not opening the door but had no real comeback when I refused. And they were always smoking and blowing smoke in through my door. They got sick of the same response and then would just say OK and leave giving me dirty intimidating looks. And they would always say Oh Ok you wont open the door, we will come back in an hour and you will open the door then. They just always tried to be creepy and intimidating. But I wouldn't react. I complained at the police station, and told them I was not happy with police blowing smoking in my apartment. After a couple of months they stopped coming around. I was told this also happened to Chinese form out in the county that moved to the city. Only people from certain regions can move to certain regions or cites. a lot of country people come to big cities to try to earn money. Only to have the police beat the shit out of them and put them on a bus back to the country because they did not have a permit to be in that city. So many people in China are wearing some type of uniform, And you see them intimidating normal dressed people. They are such authoritarian wankers

I truly enjoy your channel. I have been working and living in Shanghai since 1997, and started my China adventure through an American company and then later was invited to work with the Chinese company (one the biggest state owned firms in China, and basically they were Shanghai), and was treated like a diplomat. I had the time of my life! The RMB was 8.30 to 1 USD, and I lived for free to boot, so money filling up my pockets. I met a Chinese woman, married, had 2 beautiful daughters, bought a house in 1999, had felt safe and free. I traveled freely over the years between S.F. and Shanghai - flights everyday like a 12 hour bus ride. Now, 22 years later... it's the scariest I've ever seen. The party is over. Many of my Chinese friends who I originally met in the 90's rose through the years to influential positions within the system, and some are now in prison for "Corruption" as part of the purge - especially the Shanghai faction, and others are now toeing the CPC line and I no longer have any contact with them. I left in June this year and don't expect to ever set foot there again! Yes, it's a completely different attitude towards foreigners more than ever now. We are no longer welcome. Great people with a sad future...
@lwfeagan
@lwfeagan 5 жыл бұрын
Yep. I also left in June after years living in SH. The Entry-Exit Bureau Police in Pudong was full of other older foreigners departing and young people, mostly from Eastern European countries, starting to work or study there. Even after four months back in the USA, I still think of myself as being from SH, as I really enjoyed my time there. But very glad to hear you made the choice to get out. My startup company CEO was guilty of income tax fraud, embezzling funds from company, and corruption with China Railways CEO to funnel money for technology projects through another company at exorbitant prices to distribute. I realized as the token foreigner I could be an easy target so I knew it was time to GTFO.

Interesting story. Yes, agree. China was great in the 80s and 90s, into the early 2000s and then it increasingly became what the critics outside were saying it was. Pleased we were able to enjoy the best years in China. It's a huge disappointment to experience and see all these changes for the worse. China is awesome, but it's really not welcoming anymore. Just applying for a visa, apart from all the ridiculous paperwork, is met with resistance and often hostility. I'm sure that's on purpose to put people off. I sort of wish I hadn't even bothered giving China a chance, but now I have family ties there and it's very sad to feel unwelcome and not want to visit there anymore.

Xi Jinping received overwhelming support in China for his anti-corruption action in China, why you seem to have a problem with that? You accidentally prove that China is not currency manipulator, not devaluated RMB at all, as Trump claimed. Now One USD = 7.1 RMB, and back to your time, One USD = 8.30 RMB. Trump gave a piece of fake news. The USD devaluated compared to the RMB, not another way around. Over 97% of Americans are misinformed, mislead, manipulated, brainwashed, they believe everything that their Gov't told them. If the gov't says China is currency manipulator, they believe it, if the Gov't says China force the technology transfer, they believe it, .... plus there are over 50 big and small Steve Bannon making fake claims, ... no wonder we see American disoriented toward China, Americans ------ Great people with a sad future...

And for all I know, because its a catch 22, they both could be right at least in part. The idea that Asians aren't targeted by racists outside of China is a pipe dream, and the CCP knows it and will use it to consolidate their own identity. We do have cases of Chinese being targeted by people PRETENDING to be cops in the "West", but its often Chinese people pretending to be PAPs.

@Steve-ev6vx your comment is not helpful. The vast majority of authoritarian countries are so strict that foreigners either can't live there or don't have access to the internet or both. Yes there are plenty of vloggers all over the world but the only reason china can't keep everything a secret is because they do have a level of immigration from western countries and also it's a very large country which is more difficult to control. A country like North Korea however could control things to a much greater degree. Cuba is a tiny bit more open NOW but for most of the 20th century Americans were pretty much just plain not allowed. U might find some stuff now but not much. Not like this. Russia is an interesting case because a lot of the horrible things we hear about in the media now are rarely parrots by western foreigners. So a lot of that is propoganda. But it is still a very authoritarian country and citizens of Russia are definitely controlled to a greater degree than your average westerner but perhaps not as much as North Korea or China so u can learn a great deal and even visit. But during the Stalin years it was very hard for westerners especially Americans to visit or live there without being expected to completely denounce their citizenship. All your comments did was expose your ignorance.
@juanmccoy3066

So what you need to understand is that most totalitarian and authoritarian countries aren't open as China is in terms of migration and visitation. It's good rhetoric, but in practice it's not true - only the people who understand the concept of the human rights deserve to have them, and it's absolutely unacceptable to hoist onto ignorant people the obligation to transform their systems to follow the human rights. The correct way is to drastically limit immigration from all non-HRD the countries into OECD, unless they actually understand the history of the OECD and why the human rights were understood as a primordial concept to be developed. That also means that a big part of current immigrants should be deported and barred further entry.

Steven Drysdale Canada is a frozen inhabitable waste land. The people are even worse. It’s not a serious country. When somebody has a Canadian passport people are like lol that is cute. Not respectable. Canada is a joke country. Canada is a shithole that is in decline. It peaked many years ago. China might have a lot of problems but I’d rather live in China. Canada can only provide a mediocre or a below average life. I’m an ambitious person and Canada represents everything that is wrong in the west. Damn Canada to hell. The United States needs to invade that silly little country called Canada. Enough is enough. If the United States doesn’t take it someone else will like China or Russia. We can at least export our advanced culture and freedoms onto the Canadian people. Canadian people are pretty awful though. People who immigrated to the U.S had ambition. People who immigrated to Canada were probably the losers of the family. Nobody chooses Canada as a top destination. It is a plan b or c country. Fuck Canada. I will never step on shitty Canadian soil.

I live in the US and my employer purchased a 6.5 million dollar piece of equipment from a Chinese company. This is 20 years ago. A crew of 12 Chinese nationals came to build and commission the equipment, they had people here for over a year. During the entire time they were accompanied by a very stern and unerringly business like political officer who restricted their freedom of movement, and suppressed anything more than the most basic of casual contact. He never spoke much, his glance said it all, he didn't have to. I remember that those guys were so human and warm when he was out of sight, and became completely devoid of expression when he was afoot. They wouldn't even read magazines the like car magazines I tried to give them because they were afraid of being watched. They looked so lonely to me, they seemed to derive great joy in befriending a groundhog as a pet. I remember they weren't well paid, and all missed their families. I tried to be as much of a friend as the PO would allow. Good guys.

In 2004 my local Chinese company had a cleaning lady come to our company apartment once a week. A real luxury for a college aged intern. I figured out she reported on us when my supervisor (Chinese) said we should remember to not bring friends over as per company policy. My roommates and I loved doing misinformation campaigns by placing insane amounts of random stuff in odd places, e.g. beer bottles behind TVs, hanging condoms from curtains, etc. It was fun seeing the looks we got at the office :)

I've lived in China since June 2004 . Everything he said up here is true. However there's a way to avoid all the disturbances and hassles. You come close to the district police . Make friends with them. Know the guy in charge of your area and give him/her gifts. Smokes for the men, makeup kits for the women. They'll never bother you again.

I think that's fairly valid but there's more. When you came (and still somewhat true) one thing was pretty universal. The average Chinese didn't care about politics. That's really a key thing. If you're into politics you're either friend or foe there's no middle ground. If you stay apolitical you're at least not an enemy. Being the considerate visitor (smokes and makeup) you're fitting into Chinese culture. It's not the value of the gifts and it's the thought counts. I think generally people forget that politically China is very young. Most of the behavior I have seen is the kind of gaffes that many countries can and do make. You hear foreigners throw adjectives like homogeneous and xenophobic around but then suddenly forget they have meaning here. China may have been technically "open" in the '70s but it wasn't until the 2000's that foreigners had a significant presence. The first time I came was just before the handover (Ahh yes, Kai Tak airport). I ended my trip in a fairly modern hotel near the airport in Beijing. I went down to the bar and ordered a glass of Crown and when the bartender pulled the bottle off the shelf and placed it on the bar I got a shock. First, it was 25 years old. Second, it hadn't been opened (the paper covering the top was old). And finally, no one else came to the bar the entire time I was there. China has gotten better and loosened up from the old days in my opinion.

This is so true. I recently moved in with my wife in Beijing. We went down to the local police station and registered to get the temporary residence permit. 2 days later, in the evening around 9pm, there was a knock on the door. 3 police officers invited themselves into our house and took my picture and also took pictures of my passport and residence permit. They did not roam through the house checking things out, fortunately, and they were fairly polite. About a month later, I was able to get a "permanent" residence visa (which allows me to stay in the country until the permit expires in 2 years). Again, we went down to the police station and got a new residency permit, and 2 days later there was a knock on the door. 3 more police officers were there to take my pic and check my documents. Also, when I was visiting last spring, I rented an AirBnB apartment in Beijing for 3 months. AirBnB was supposed to handle the registration with the local police just as the hotels do (they even announced such an agreement a year earlier in March, 2018), but they didn't to this. So, as I was walking back to the apartment with my then-fiance after lunch on day 5, I was stopped by a police officer who started asking me questions about who I was and where I was staying. We had to ride down to the police station in the back of his police car and then spent an hour or so trying to get this straightened out with the apartment owner. In the end, I was told that I had to move out and move into a hotel immediately. So, lesson learned, don't do AirBnB in China, unless you are only going to be there for a couple of days.

Big contrast with America - where everyone is from somewhere else and the cops don't give a damn unless you do something outrageous like shooting up a shopping center. The USA is like that scene from OLIVER! "Consider yourself part of the family..We have taken to you so strong - It's clear we are going to get along." And if you decide to stay - NO PROBLEM! Why within weeks in states like California you can get a driver's license and voter registration card! The Illegals from English speaking countries are IN LIKE FLINT in no time. I pushed the door shut on his hand, heard him scream in pain and I have to admit that I smiled when I heard that. He pulled his hand out, said something I Chinese that I took as insults and went on his phone. Haven't seen him since. My son told me that there are so called Chinese police stations in Canada. Lots of hotels in China have 1 floor or marked rooms for foreigners where there are hidden cameras in bathrooms and voice microphones in the rooms. My friend talked a Swiss German language so the hotel manager moved him to another bigger room. Finally a worker at the hotel was nice enough to tell my friend just talk English because ccp government was listening. The worker at the hotel said just wait to go outside to have personal phone conversations. That was about two years ago I don't know if it's that way anymore though. There was always somebody following him also everywhere he went.
