I was just walking in a park and saw a guy pocket picking from a couple sitting on a bench. So immediately I stopped him. I thought he would run, but he just stood there staring at me. I walked away. He followed me! I was supposed to meet a friend at her apt. He and another guy followed me all the way to the building. Before I could call my friend, they came to me said if I tried to intervene ever again, they will cut my face. I was in shock of course. My friend was not home yet. So I left the apt. The couple I helped was waiting at the apt gate. They saw the guys were following me and wanted to make sure I was ok. They waited with me until my friend showed up. It was very nice of them. Thank you for this video. Sorry for using a throw away account-but I have to comment. I lived non-concurrently in Shanghai visiting family who had a job assignment there over 5 years (early 2010's; I myself having spent 12 months cumulatively there). I was upset at the "apathetic" attitude of people (this is saying it lightly) but I compartmentalized it as "this is the 'new york' of China+different culture". Being a young man I yearned for adventure and traveled extensively during those 12 months. I was devastated to see that the complete disregard for human life was evident everywhere across mainland china. Even the small towns. As a Soldier I have deployed to the middle east for the US military. I can say with complete honesty that I saw more people's souls leave their bodies and die in front of me in China than I did while in an active combat zone. I was not a fobbit, my job in the military is considered "combat arms"; I averaged a combat patrol every 48 hours. I watched 9 people actively die in front of me in China and no one stopped to help. Due to my family's position and my military affiliation I was briefed very clearly I was not to intervene. I pleaded with others to help. No one ever did. My platoon actively did more to help ENEMY COMBATANTS WE HAD SHOT WHO HAD BEEN SHOOTING AT US MINUTES BEFORE than Chinese do for their own people. My final straw with china was walking back from the wet market with groceries for the family. I waited at the stop light to cross the street. A lady across the road (legally) crossed the street when her light changed. I watched a speeding taxi run a red light, destroy the baby carriage, and watched the baby fly across the road and slam onto the pavement head first, dead instantly. The mother rushed over and was shrieking the most heart wrenching crying I have ever heard. Everyone walked by without batting an eye. This baby was the seventh human I watched die. I lost all hope in the mainland on that day. I know no one will read this because the video is old, but it's very cathartic to finally get it out.

There was a Chinese guy who stopped to help an old lady who had been knocked down. It wasn’t a scam. But she sued the good samaritan and the judge ruled against him saying, “If you weren’t the one who knocked her down, you wouldn’t have stopped to help.” That was an actual news article. It blew my mind. When I was in China, my ex-wife (she was my girlfriend then) and I left a KTV and there was this young guy in the parking lot drunk as shit just screaming at his girlfriend. All up in her face. She had her head down and was just taking it. I immediately start heading over there to stop him, but my ex physically stopped me and starting yelling at me to not get involved. She was furious. Her reaction was very shocking to me. Afterwards she was like, “This is China. You don’t understand. Don’t get involved.” Just the usual bullshit they say. She couldn’t understand that it didn’t have to be that way. I have a theory that Chinese people are conditioned to do nothing because it makes them easier to control. It’s easier for the CCP to keep power if the citizens don’t stand up to injustice. They have a vested interest in keeping the population meek and selfish. They claim to have this collective, but in practice everyone looks out for themselves. This way they won’t raise a finger when they see a neighbor get screwed over by the CCP.

I think your analysis is spot on. Yeah, there was a case here several years ago in Australia (I believe it was in Melbourne, but I could be wrong; I'll try & find a link and post it here) where a female Chinese national hit and ran over a woman on a pedestrian crossing and then stopped and reversed over her, and then repeated this manoeuvre forwards and backwards over her body several more times to make sure she was dead. She then attempted to drive off, dragging the woman underneath the car and only stopped because the victim's body finally prevented the vehicle from gaining traction and continuing forward motion. Immediately after the incident, when the driver was forcibly dragged out of the driver's seat by shocked bystanders while continuing to attempt to flee (her car was raised on top of the victim's corpse to the extent that the front driving wheels were raised high enough to loose traction and were spinning at maximum RPM's because she had her foot flat down on the accelerator pedal). The driver confessed to these witnesses that she actually tried to kill the person she had accidentally run over because of the following belief in her own Chinese culture: If you kill a person by accident, you will have to pay their family some compensation in a lump-sum payout and receive punishment under criminal law system (you may go to prison and/or receive a fine; depends on how well-connected you are with the local officials). However if you simply injure the victim badly and permanently disable them, you will be liable to pay for their rehabilitation and living expenses (and that of their dependents) for the rest of their (and possibly your) life. So in other words in Chinese culture, it it better to simply kill someone outright an accident and pay their family upfront, rather than simply injure them seriously and be stuck with looking after them & their dependents financially for the next 50 or more years. When the case went to court, the driver had changed her story to something along the line of "I thought I had run over a bag of rubbish that was in the middle of the road which had got stuck under my car, and reversed back & forth several times to remove it". I believe she ended up getting a reduced sentence because the prosecution could not prove beyond reasonable doubt her intent to murder (her "confession" to witnesses at the time was deemed "inadmissible" evidence in court). Rumour had it that this lady was the wife/mistress of a Chinese diplomat or senior Party Member however the whole thing was quickly hushed-up and reporting of the court proceedings conveniently gagged.

For the most part, its true. Religion often comes about during uncertain times where life is fleeting and people need a justification for the absurdity and indifferent cruelty of the world. While my wife and I were at the grand canyon about10 years ago we encounter this middle age woman coming up the trail from the bottom of the canyon. It was obvious that she had not gone far down that steep trail since she had abosolutly no backpack, water, proper shoes etc. As soon as she saw us, she began madly taking picture of the most mondane things, click click click. We figured that she needed help and found that she spoke only Chinese. We used sign language to get her to reluctantly follow us up the trail. We suspected that she became separated from her Chinese tourist group which we saw earlier in the day. My wife stayed with her at the head of the trail while I ran ahead and found a park ranger who radioed ahead to find the group who were getting ready to get on their bus. To make a long story short, the english speaking group leader brusquely brushed me aside and took the women by the arm an hustled her on the waiting bus. He never thanked me or the ranger and he actually gave me dirty look as if I was the cause of all this. Now I know why.

About 13 years ago I had a similar experience walking home on summer from middle school in Busan, South Korea. It was my second year of living back in Korea, and on my way home I saw a man and a woman standing over an elderly woman who was on the sidewalk, next to a steep hill. This was a busy street, with plenty of students and adults going about their business. She kept saying "I can get up I'll be okay" while the man was being wishy washy about maybe calling someone with his hands in his pockets and the younger woman just watched. I was pretty small but I insisted on helping her and managed to lift her up and half-carried half dragged her back to her apartment. When we almost got here, a hair salon owner started shouting at me telling me to let go of her and stop assaulting(?) her. The older lady explained what had happened and the hair salon owner thanked me, taking down the name of the school I went to and my name. I arrived at my home drenched in sweat and told my mother about this, expecting some degree of praise. Instead she said that I was naive and retarded, that I should have just left her there, that kids get kidnapped "all the time". She then called my dad at work to have him "yell at me" to explain why what I did was wrong. It felt like shit to be told this crap and even have my older siblings say "well that's just how things are". I just felt bitter and disappointed. It felt so contradictory and hypocritical for people to be this way in a country where "ethics" is a core class from first grade through high school. As much shit as I might get for pointing this out, I think the attitude that most people had/have, whether it was the very tight circle of concern, or over-emphasis on outward appearance and social status is definitely a shared characteristic with mainland China.

Serpentza - You are right mate, Ive had the same situation happen to me, as you say there are many reasons, one is they are afraid they would or could be sued, i.e. the vase scam, I stopped a woman being beaten by a strong guy and nobody helped but the reason why are a few, people are afraid in China to help, also there is the losing face element, if they turn around and say they dont need help or whatever they are shackled mentally, but they are NOT bad people, as with the abducting kids YES it does happen and people are afraid of these gangs, these guys are criminals and people are afraid to get involved, when I saw this a tear from my eye fell and I had ended up crying cause this does happen, I was super stressed with my kids playing around without myself or my wife around, I seriously thought about somehow microchipping my kids so I can find them quickly if anything like this happened. Winston - people hate you and some love you, but I say to those that HATE him, why? He makes money from his channel, he uses clickbait titles and subjects to generate interest and get you to watch, who doesn't? The question is does what he says actually happen? Is he lying? Well, the answer is no, it is true, I've lived in China longer than Gweilo60, more than Serpentza and the other guys, I was there at the turn of the century 1999/2000 and can tell you that so far what he has said is the truth. Yes, he may overemphasize some things but this is youtube :) One must never forget that there are really great people in China, honest, hardworking people that nobody knows about, with ordinary and some with tragic stories to tell and others wonderful stories, once Winston started talking about politics his goose was cooked, or his time in China was numbered cause you can't do that and get away with it, IM not saying its right or wrong but the way it is. I suspect he had many subjects in his mind to put onto video whilst in China that he could only attempt to upload when he left and I agree that he was probably itching to say many thing but couldnt. Only one question to Winston if he ever reads these comments is this, now that you've left China and free to make these videos, isn't it dangerous for your wifes family as they could be targeted if you know what I mean, and you definitely know what I mean. I mean is it not dangerous you making these videos if it shows China or the Gov in a negative light, dangerous to your wife's family I mean?

In general, mainland people are extremely selfish and really don't care about their fellow countrymen. What is always very amusing to me, because how can you be SO patriotic and not give an F about your countrymen? Same goes for the 50 cent army if they didn't get paid to do what they do. They simply wouldn't do it at all! Scamming is part of the Chinese society, and the West felt for it in many ways (and still does).

Well, there was a famous court case where a man drove an injured woman to the hospital (I think she was a pedestrian hit by a car or something). The injured woman sued the guy that drove her to the hospital to pay for her medical bills, or just just because, anyways she won. The reason given by the judge was this: the man must have been responsible or partly responsible because why else would he feel compelled to drive her to the hospital. A guy that showed up after the fact and clearly had nothing to do with it. News of that case spread like wildfire throughout China and every one told their children to never, under any circumstances, help a stranger. Because you could put yourself on the hook for mind blowing amounts of money that will financially ruin you for life. I heard that some laws were passed so that strangers cannot be sued for helping someone in certain situations. But no one cares, no one trusts it, what's done is done.

Being as I used to live among them trust me.... Most of them are bad people and only some of them are innocent drug addicts because of mental disability's and life circumstances.

ninjazhu ... By "heart" do you mean that the beggar didn't make a connection between what is given up by working people in order to earn a wage and the actual coins that he held, then sure. Working people sacrifice in order to provide for themselves and their families, whereas the beggar has not made this choice, rather he is exploiting the charity of others, and consequently money does not hold the same worth to him, so he freely gives of it and does not demand value in return.

I was in Beijing with my Chinese wife when we saw someone pickpocket a stranger. I immediately ran to the person who hadn't yet realized he had been pickpocketed and my wife pulled on me, pleading with me not to get involved, which I didn't listen to. I don't speak Mandarin so I had to jester to the young guy what had just happened to him and pointed out the person who had stolen his wallet. He went after him and my wife then insisted we leave because it was too dangerous. Very sad.

Well if (and when) the whole society is like that, protecting someone from harming themselves while helping nothing would actually be the correct thing to do. It may not fit your morals but it still might be the smart thing to do. Being "right" alone while a billion people around you are not going to comply does not really help until there is a movement large enough to make a difference in society.

@@HeatherHolt With all due respect, I suspect you are thinking how to solve a problem in the west and expect that to work in mainland China, failing to understand the whole big picture why this problem exists in the first place? I can't blame anyone for trying, but I am very sceptical about succeeding in what I'm sure we all would like to see.
@HeatherHolt5 жыл бұрын
Pentti Kantanen oh for sure. Since I am a westerner I can only go on how I was raised but it’s definitely a conditioning of the Chinese people through the mistake of it being a communist nation that causes this selfishness to take hold. However I still stand by my statement about one person can begin a revolution of change it might not be quick but it has to start somehow and I hope that the Chinese people can find some freedom from their overbearing government soon, maybe in a few generations they find empathy and compassion for their fellow man as well. Cheers.

I was also witnessed a car accident once in my life but didn't tried to touch anyone of the people with injuries. I was afraid since I have no training about these situations I might hurt them even more. Of course I called the health care system and the police to let them know about it and stayed at the point until they came . I believe everywhere in Europe is a crime to pretend nothing happened and move on.
