if you see rural buildings scattered among high rises and modern structures it is more likely the people who live there chose not to modernize or it was a conscious decision by the city government to preserve that part of the city. despite what western media tells you there are strong property rights in china. one phenomenon you can google is china's nail homes where people refuse to sell their piece of land and construction is forced to build around that piece of property.

Its because your so down to earth & truthful about yourself & able to adjust & assimilate in an entirely different culture that people will admire & respect you at any cost . Your mandarin language is as valuable as your charm to be greeting the ordinary Chinese in a certain village & take the truth about the lake / canal you saw without being offended . Introducing yourself as American is very important to showcase the friendliness of Ordinary US citizen not only visiting China but helping them improve their Ecosystems for a better environment in the future .

I like to see some videos that show the true story of China. China is far from perfect but it’s headed to the right direction. These villages seem to be frozen in time and I like it the way how it has been preserved. I like those futuristic big cities as well as those old towns and villages. Btw, it’s old and underdeveloped but so clean. I have plans to retire in a small old slow paced town back in China. 🇨🇳

New subscriber here. I have seen other videos from Katherine but this is the most enjoyable one. A close up, even intimate look at a small part of China. I love how she is so matter of fact interacting with everyone. Give yourself the stinkiest pond award - such an American thing to say in Chinese. I'm surprised around Ninpo so many people assume she's Russian. Feels like all of the U.S.' rhetoric on China are starting to have an effect.

This observation is so true: All areas around the high-speed rail lines have developed rapidly. The places without high-speed rail or trains that used to be pretty good decades ago , have been completely abandoned and outdated. That fishing village used to have well-developed waterways, and it couldn't be modernized only having waterways but with no highways. Nowadays it is hard to find villages that haven't changed much for forty years. Very real authentic tour Vlog, enjoyed very much, I knew many places by names, but visited none, very much expecting your tour in Jinhua (金华), my hometown. Thank you very much 阳离子。

This bicycle trip was a great idea! I am a cyclist but I live in California and I don't think it would be safe here to ride great distances through strange neighborhoods. Ningbo has always had a "second city" type reputation, I think the last time it might have been wealthy would be back in the 1800s. I find the reaction of the common people to seeing you very interesting, those guys assumed you were Russian! I think word of how the US is trying to contain China is getting around and adversely affecting Chinese people's attitudes. BTW, Dahon bikes are meant for commuting, they are not the most ergonomic rides, hope your body does not get bent out of shape by the end!!!

Your travel videos and other like yours are so much more informative, interesting, revealing, enlightening, and archival worthy than most of these crap you learn in a West-centric anthropology course, which are always condescending or at least harbor a sense of superiority if indirectly. Your videos also strike strong contrast to all the negative assessment propagated by all the "China experts" who have never stepped foot in China nor speak the language.

I love this video…. You see the beauty, not so beautiful and the stinkiest canal. Thank you for showing us less travelled side of China. The glitzy cities, charming, gorgeous ancient towns and rural, sometimes nondescript villages are all fascinating to see. 👍👍😍
