Hi Katherine, thanks for another great video. I have iu mien (yao ethnic) friends in the states and I always wonder how does the Yao language compare to Han Chinese languages. Perhaps if you're still there you could ask if it were easy for the locals to learn Chinese? What are the similarities and differences?

Thank you for the video. I have never been to such mountain villages. I looked up Youling Village in Sanpai Town, Liannan Yao Autonomous County online, and it indeed has a very long history. Youling Ancient Village was established in the late Tang Dynasty, expanded in the Song Dynasty, and flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is one of the ancient villages with the most intact preservation of Yao ethnic culture. However, the living conditions were poor. Seeing that the ancient village was helped and relocated with support from the government, I really appreciate the practical efforts being made.

In the overview of the village, You can see there are some empty space between house, which is regular trend in Chinese, the vanishing village. Most of young generation left village to town or city. And then some traditional things will lost too after older people gone. Thanks Katherine recording the current status of Chinese Villages.
