Chinese Super Mario Galaxy HD on Nvidia Shield TV! - Full 100% Luigi Playthrough!

Watch in 1080p if possible! This is the official Chinese release of Super Mario Galaxy for the Nvidia Shield TV. This HD version of Super Mario Galaxy is only available in China, where the game had never been released before until recently; they got it for the first time in early 2018. As a result, this release is on the Nvidia Shield TV rather than the Wii, and it's in true 1080p HD to try to keep up with the modern era (though they didn't improve the texturing to match the new resolution :P). The controls have been remapped to work with a standard gamepad, rather than Wii Remote. I imported the Chinese Nvidia Shield TV in anticipation of the announced release of a Chinese version of Mario Kart Wii (with official online multiplayer!), but in the meantime I picked up Galaxy to see how it was, and this is the result!

The full game is played here, as Luigi, obtaining all 121 stars. There is commentary, however since this was originally a Twitch live stream, it lacks direction and may not always make sense without context. Swordofseals joins in on commentary about halfway through. I didn't originally intend to put this on KZbin, but since Nintendo have relaxed their copyright policies, I'm giving it a go! I'm choosing to upload the Luigi playthrough rather than the Mario one, because obviously Luigi is superior to Mario (and the Mario stream suffered framerate issues and stream drops, which this one did not). That said, for some reason, I note that this KZbin upload does run into framerate issues every now and again, though they go away after a few minutes. The original VOD does not have these issues. This video is 1080p at 30fps, but the game runs at 1080p/60fps. I don't have the hardware required to record 1080/60, so it looks even better in person than it does here. The game runs very smooth, with only occasional stutter. Though sometimes in areas of the game where the action is intense, the controls do end up feeling a bit lethargic. The stream bitrate was 2900kbps, which is why the footage sometimes looks grainy when there's a lot of motion. Unfortunately, there was not much I could do about this, also due to hardware limitations.
As for how the controls map to the Nvidia TV's controller, they are as follows:
Left analog: Move Mario/Luigi
Right analog: Move Wiimote cursor
D-pad: Camera control
Left trigger: Crouch
Right trigger: Grab pull stars, confirm menu choices
A: Jump, confirm menu choices
B: Shoot starbits
X: Spin
Y: Centre camera
Anything involving motion controls just got mapped to the analog stick, which usually simplifies them. But cursor activity is MUCH harder with the right analog, so it balances out :P
If anyone's trying to get this version of Super Mario Galaxy for themselves, it's a complicated affair, and I'll try to post detailed instructions when Mario Kart Wii releases for it, too. And yes, I will be uploading stuff to do with the Mario Kart Wii release on there!

I imagine they just made some of their graphics and input libraries for the switch and then compiled for a different platform. I think emulating would be excessive if they already have the source code.

For those watching on or after late 2020: This game was made available on the Switch as part of the Super Mario 3D All Stars collection, which is sold in the US, Canada, Latin America, UK, Europe, Japan, Taiwan (it's not China), South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. As per Japanese legislation signed in 1962 regarding fair competition, this will only be sold until 2021-03-31. It has become much harder to purchase the mainland Chinese version of the NVIDIA Shield, mainly due to the COVID19 pandemic and economic sanctions placed by many countries around the world. Paying for the game is near impossible due to the US ban on WeChat and potentially AliPay (probably as a punishment by the US government to the Communist Party of China for unleashing COVID19). Couple that with the atrocious human rights abuses by the CCP (especially in Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang), and I would stay away from the NVIDIA Shield version. And heaven will crush the CCP.

I don't remember it's name, but it's a bit of software called MultiBRSTM. Its highly unlikely to find any very intuitive versions, but MultiBRSTM is fairly simple to use

You can, but this is the first time Nintendo have released an official HD solution, basically, which makes it a reasonably big deal. They don't tend to do that when they re-release their games.

If Super Mario 3D All-Stars ever gets released for the Tencent Nintendo Switch, Tencent and Nintendo should use their official Chinese versions instead of just ignoring everything, saying that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the first Animal Crossing game to be localized to Chinese and coming up with new chinese names instead of using the already existing iQue ones, Super Mario 64 is based it's iQue Player localization (神游马力欧), Super Mario Sunshine is based on it's currently unreleased Nvidia Shield localization that is localized by Nvidia and not iQue, for some reason (超级马力欧 太阳之光), but with the enemies' original iQue names and not the ones used after Mario Tennis Aces, that is, if there are any enemies with their different names that appear in SMS, and Super Mario Galaxy is based on it's salvaged iQue Wii localization that was repurposed for it's Nvidia Shield version (超级马力欧银河) but this time with Mii support, I hope Nintendo and Tencent finally brings back the iQue legacy for the chinese fans and give them their proper chinese Mario 3D All-Stars, It could become a reality!

No, but the critical thing is that the Nvidia Shield TV runs a Tegra X1 chipset inside of it, which is identical to that of the Switch. Plenty of speculation of whether or not these Wii games, which are officially supported by Nintendo (this is an official release with full branding) are due for worldwide release on Switch just because of that link.

I wonder why there are so many ads in the beginning Btw the Chinese release for the Wii back then was in the state where everything is finished, and it is ready to be released. The malls even had the demo kiosk and the pre-order information set up. However, the government didn't approve the Wii and the Wii didn't get released. Same with the GameCube. This game is the one that left over. Translation of Mario Kart Wii is not finished yet so Mario Kart Wii might not be re-released.

Depends on the DRM among other things. We tried flashing an English Shield to Chinese firmware to buy the game legitimately, and that was a complete failure since the shop only allows devices originally manufactured for China to buy games. It's quite silly.

Before you do, make sure you get a Chinese one, any other version doesn't have access to them at all. Furthermore, you'll probably need a Chinese contact in order to pay for the games, since they only accept WeChat and Alipay. You may also need a VPN, i heard that nowadays the Chinese online store on the Shield TV only accepts purchases if you happen to be in China, supposedly. It's very impractical.
