Success in any sphere requires certain abilities. Even to come to experience the Self, it is necessary for one to have certain qualities such as, the ability to discriminate between the Real and unreal, to control the mind, to have mastery over the senses as well as the compelling desire to know the Self. In this episode discussions on these themes are depicted through the incidents from the lives of Vitashoka and Nachiketa.
Vitashoka, the brother of Emperor Ashoka is of the opinion that the charity given to Buddhist monks is used by them to indulge in pleasures of the world. As a result of a conspiracy by some ministers against Vitashoka, King Ashoka orders his execution. Prior to the execution, King Ashoka grants Vitashoka seven days to indulge in various pleasures. It is in the face of death that it dawns upon Vitashoka that one who is constantly aware of his imminent death can never really be carried away by pleasures. This was a unique method adopted by King Ashoka to get Vitashoka to understand and realise the Truth.
In the second story, a young Nachiketa, having been sent to Yama, the Lord of death, gains the knowledge of the Self. Vajashravas, Nachiketa's father, having performed the Vishvajit sacrifice to overcome attachment, is seen to be selecting and distributing in charity the most aged and frail cows. Nachiketa wonders why his father was doing this. It then dawns on Nachiketa that his father was not yet free from attachment, and for this attachment to end his father needs to give up his attachment to his son - Nachiketa. He then goes and asks his father as to who he is giving Nachiketa to. Agitated by this question, Vajashravas replies in anger, “Go, I give you unto Death!” Find out what happens when Nachiketa reaches the portals of Death!
A beautiful episode that narrates the conversation between Nachiketas and Yama, the Lord of Death, from the Upanishad Ganga series.

यम --नचिकेता, देवताओं के लिए भी यह रहस्य दुर्लभ है ! तुम कोई दूसरा वर मांग लो ! नचिकेता-- हे मृत्यु, मैं उस रहस्य को जानना चाहता हूँ, जिसे न जानने के कारण मेरे तपस्वी पिता मोह के बन्धन नहीं काट सकें ! क्या है जीवन की उपासना का वह रहस्य जिसे मनीषी आत्मविद्या कहते हैं ? यम - हे नचिकेत, तुम सौ वर्ष के आयु वाले पुत्र, पौत्र मांग लो, पशु-धन, हाथी-घोड़े, स्वर्ण-रत्न मांग लो ! मृत्यु लोक में जो जो कामनाएं दुर्लभ हैं, वे मांग लो ! ये स्त्रियां, ये रथ, ये वाद्य मांग लो, पर मृत्यु के सम्बन्ध में प्रश्न मन पूंछो ! नचिकेता--हे अन्तक,ये सुख, ये भोग कल रहेगें या नहीं इसका भरोसा नहीं ! भोग से इन्द्रियों का तेज कम होता है, इसलिए आपके ये घोड़े, ये नाँच, ये गान, आप अपने पास ही रहने दें ! मनुष्य के धन की प्यास कभी बुझने वाली नहीं ! इसलिए मुझे तो आप वही ज्ञान दे, जिसे पाकर मनुष्य अमर हो जाता है ! यम --हे नचिकेता, जीवन के दो पथ हैं, एक श्रेय का दूसरा प्रेय का ! प्रेय का मार्ग भौतिकता का, भोग का है ! योग का श्रेय का मार्ग है,आध्यात्मिता है ! दोनों मनुष्य के सामने भिन्न -भिन्न रूपों में आते हैं ! बुद्धिमान प्रेय की अपेक्षा श्रेय को चुनता है ! निर्बुद्ध अपने लिए प्रेय का मार्ग स्वीकार करता है; भोग का मार्ग, अविद्या का अज्ञान का मार्ग है ! आध्यात्म का मार्ग विद्या का ज्ञान का मार्ग है ! प्रेय का मार्ग को चुनने वाला सुख को ही सत्य मान बैठता है ! श्रेय का मार्ग को चुनने वाला आत्मा को ही सत्य मानता है ! प्रेय का मार्ग इन्द्रियों की ओर ले जाता है,और श्रेय का मार्ग इन्द्रियों से परे ले जाता है ! हे नचिकेत, आत्मा के सत्य को तर्क से नहीं जाना जा सकता है ! स्रोतीय और ब्रह्मनिष्ठ गुरु के द्वारा दिए गए ज्ञान से ही आत्मा का सत्य जाना जा सकता है ! यम --हे नचिकेता, इस शरीर को तुम रथ और आत्मा को रथी जानो ! बुद्धि को सारथी और मन को लग़ाम जानो ! इन्द्रियाँ रथ के घोड़े हैं और विषय चारागाह ! जो चंचल मन का है, जिसने मन की लगाम नहीं खींच रखी, इन्द्रियाँ उसके वश में नहीं रहती, ठीक वैसे ही, जैसे दुष्ट घोड़े सारथी के ! जो निश्चल मन का है, जिसकी मन की लगाम खींच रखी है,इन्द्रियाँ उसके वश में रहती हैं, ठीक वैसे ही,जैसे उत्तम घोड़े सारथी के ! विवेक जिसका सारथि है, जिसने मन रुपी लगाम खीच रखी है, वही मनुष्य अपने गंतब्य तक पहुँचता है ! हे नचिकेता, इन्द्रियों से इन्द्रियों के विषय श्रेष्ठ हैं, विषय से मन, मन से बुद्धि और बुद्धि से आत्मा श्रेष्ठ है ! जो इस आत्मा को जान लेता है, वह मृत्यु से पर चला जाता है !
