It's clearly shown in PS-1 that these are the younger versions of Aditya Karikalan and Nandini aka Vikram and Aishwariya. And it was clearly told that they were very much in love. Time for a rewatch to refresh your memory.

It is an emotional song which really would melt your soul if really the same effect is portrayed in the movie scenes as explained in novel. But this is better to read in book than seeing as movie. Even though the initial 8-10 pagez drags you with the city, people and nature you will never know when you started travelling along with the novel. Such an impact this novel brings you which is why it is still highly sold novel in Tamilnadu. Every charcter has a story for themselves and a mission.
