Chinook Ultralight and LSA aircraft fly to Carrollton, Ohio for breakfast on Saturday as usual, but discover lots of traffic. Plenty of radio banter on this 40 mile Chinook trip, as aircraft converge at the restaurant. Gyrocopter is along on this trip, but pretty hard to see, so better to watch on a big screen TV. ....This Chinook is FOR SALE, as I am just getting too old.

This may be a stupid question ( I have so many) but do you navigate by landmarks or do you actually have a GPS unit, maps, or what? What altitude do you usually fly at? I love those little planes! Thanks for posting.

That is a good question. It is easy to get lost up there. Different times of day and weather conditions can make things look so different, it is easy to get lost. You can't just follow roads, as it is easy to get mixed up. When I started flying in 1995, I found it difficult to find grass strips. In Ohio there are many farm fields, and they all look like grass strips. When I started flying, I used a sectional maps, followed power lines, and looked for landmarks such as water towers, coal mines, etc. Most towns have their names on the water towers. I fly at about 700 or 800 feet above the ground. You won't find big aircraft that low, as they are very afraid of cell towers. Later, I got a camping and hikers GPS. They are much cheaper than aircraft units. I always used just the arrow that points to my destination. I flew much straighter with it, and it told my ground speed, too. You will see it in some of my videos attached to my control stick. Thanks for the question.

Landing long because of hill was an easy mistake for first timers in. The restaurant was really good at one time. I hope it still is.

BRS would be useful for midair collisions with birds, or other aircraft or flight control failure.

Thats what I was thinking. If you had a structural/air frame failure and lost a wing or tail, etc, etc, it probably wouldn't matter what you did with the flight controls. I would settle for hitting the ground anywhere, trees, ground, water, power lines, if I had a parachute slowing my fall so I'd be less likely to lose consciousness, compared to no parachute.

I was looking at the Detroit Sectional and you have more towers than Montana has mountains.

Yes, there are a lot of towers, but I like them. They keep larger and faster aircraft away from me, as I always fly low. Larger planes have an engine and lots of instruments in the front, and cannot see me very well. Some of the guys I fly with have transponders and ADSB, but my Chinook is not required to have one.🙂

I built it it 2001. Took 90 days. Been modifying it ever since. Engine has over 1400 hours on it with no parts required. Only gaskets. Just now put in new rings and replaced 2 main bearings on the crankshaft.

Top speed on mine is about 95 mph. I have 65 hp. I almost never go that fast. I cruise at 65 to 75 when flying with others. If I am buy myself, usually 60 mph. I am not talking knots. It drinks about 3.5 gph Faster speeds = $$$ There is one of my videos where I go 95 on a pass down the runway. My early videos do not have narration, only subtitles.

I built it in 2001. Engine was used, and I had that before getting the kit. Took me 90 days to build, paint, and wire it. First plane I ever built. Engine had 1400 hours on it before I put anything but gaskets in it. Check my videos. Thanks

Anyone wanting a new engine on one of these has to pay for an 80 horse power Rotax 912 now the 65 horse power 582 is out of production.

Anyone know what the top wind speed is that you can fly that in safely, I know very little about flying always thought I would enjoy it though, stay safe out there

I usually prefer crosswinds of 20 mph or less if landing on pavement. 25 mph if landing on grass. Need to watch out for rotors when landing down in a slot with trees. Winds straight down the runway are no problem.

Hard to see wires, too. I know where they are, because we fly this route every saturday in the summer. We don't fly in winter.

Yes. It is a grayhead Rotax 582 with 65HP. 1489 hours when I sold it. Still running fine. I do take it apart about every 300 hours to check wear and be sure rings are not stuck. See my other videos.

When flying Ultralight type aircraft, you should always expect it and be prepared for a forced landing. I practice forced landings.

I had 1489 hours on my 582 there when I sold the Chinook. The engine was in great shape as you can see in my engine video. 2 best things I did was remove oil injection, and run zero pressure in cooling system.

I want an ultralight float plane to fly just above the waves like a WIG. it seems WIG are too complex and nobody makes them anyway. why isn't there such an aircraft?

I think you would find very few places in Ohio to land a float plane. Lake Erie, the Ohio river, and some private lakes. Better check into it.

This is an LSA aircaft. While it is an ultralight type aircraft, it has 2 seats, large fuel tanks, and a weight of 550 lbs. The top speed in level flight is 95 mph.

@@EdwardKelly-vi9sg Early Chinooks were single seat, had only a Rotax 277 engine and 5 gallon fuel tanks. They were indeed an ultralight.

A ballistic parachute should not be deployed for an “engine out”. It is there for a catastrophic failure of you air frame or controls. With an engine out, just pick a spot and land it.

They say a successful landing, is any landing you can walk away from, a bad landing though, is cringeworthy expensive & a sick feeling to see any damage to your bird knowing you’ll be grounded till repairs are made!!!!!!! 😖😫😢

I have used the same A3 radio for over 25 years. $165 ICOM. Range is an easy 80 miles. I no longer use the rechargable battery pack, and have the adapter wired into cigarette lighter 12v power.
