I absolutely loved your solution for the castors you used. I stopped using those, as they tend to bend over on rough terrain. But that was because I had them mounted on the thin walled tubing. Your plan with the flat bar was an eureka, and a why didn't I think of that, moment for me.

This is great! I have the lower evolution model, 355 I believe. It definitely throws sharp little chips everywhere. My current solution was to hang a welding blanket behind it. Do you still get some chips flying around? Or does it contain them pretty well? This saw's chip guard is a lot bigger, mine is just a tiny little part. I think I'll make a bigger one and a table like this for it.

Great video as always! You are an incredible instructor. And your workshop is becoming more and more awesome! As I've mentioned before, I can't weld in my workshop. I have a hand tools woodworking workshop in the basement of an apartment building. But when I can ... I'm definitely going to take your courses!

I just use weld nuts for the bottoms of my frames. You also get more thread this way since flanged weld nuts come with stems that sit inside the tubing, making your casters more stable

There is a lot of spare space under the saw if you make the shoot go into a tube to a smaller tray and build in the sides with storage it would be very handy.
@TimWelds

That’s a great idea! I’m thinking about adding some extensions that sit in the sides and swing out to support longer pieces, but there could still be some room for storage as well.

@@TimWelds I've been hoping someone would make a dry cut saw with precise miters. Evolution is right up the street from me,where I saw the prototype. I did several reviews on the Rage 2 I had for years. Pretty cold company actually had to go to my local weld shop for buy one.

Can you show how the chips are directed down into the chute from the blade shooting them straight back???
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 жыл бұрын
Now that you mention it, that would have been a good thing to show. The saw has a fairly large deflector that sits right behind the blade and directs the chips downward. I was going to put a back stop on it, but after trying it, it seems like most of them were making it down into the bin anyway. The hardest problem to solve is the chips that shoot out of the end of the tubing, but I'm happy with an 80% solution here.

@@TimWelds Sorry for asking but do you use chemicals for other types of welds? I have seen in the past some welders using acids to remove the blackness from the welds. But I don't know if that is common use or not.

Funny, I just mounted my new evolution chop saw on a HF Hercules saw stand. Then you build this chip catcher. Hmm, what should I do? Thanks for the build.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 жыл бұрын
I was looking at the Hercules stand. It looks nice, especially the material supports on each end, which I’d like to add on this at some point. I wonder if there would be a way to make a frame for some sort of heavy duty bag underneath the saw on an open stand like that. I’m pretty sure I’ll have to sweep up anyway because of the chips that fly out of the end of the tubing, so it might not be worth bothering with anyway. Harbor Freight has these magnetic sweepers on little wheels that actually work really well.
@CraigHollabaugh
@CraigHollabaugh 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimWelds The extension arms are quite nice, I get 10' stock from the metal yard. The Evolution magnetic wand works great because the saw is mostly aluminum. The HF mag sweeper is ok, I used it today too. Best part about the combo, the colors match!

Nice project, Tim. How do you like that saw? Is it worth the money?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 жыл бұрын
I like it really well so far. This is the first project that I have done with it, but here are my first impressions. The thing I really like about it compared to my other chop saws is that the head pivots rather than the table so that the material sits straight side to side no matter what angle you're cutting. It's also nice that it can miter either direction, which will be especially useful on angle iron which isn't symmetric and can't just be flipped over as easily. It's really easy to change the angle of cut and to change the front to back position of the blade without any tools, a big time saver. The clamping setup is great and having both sides clamped feels more secure than just one. The only drawbacks that I've found are that it's less portable due to the larger size and it does take a little longer to clamp with multiple clamps when making straight cuts. I'm pretty sure that this will become my go-to tool for cutting long material. Whether it's worth the money depends on an individual situation and what value it adds to that situation. I do think that relative to other options out there and for the features it provides, it is fairly priced and from what I've seen so far, I would recommend it. However, I never want anyone to think they have to buy a big, fancy tool to make things.

What tap and dye set do you recommend? Great video!
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 жыл бұрын
Here's a link to a set of taps and drills that I have and absolutely love. amzn.to/3GKjrse They are spiral point taps, meaning that they direct the chip downward out the bottom of a through hole rather than jamming it against the other side of the flute. This allows them to cruise through the metal with ease. I also have a cheap tap and die set in case I need to chase threads on an oddball size, but the small kit I linked with a basic tap wrench has proven to be the most useful.

You're going to love that saw, it's the best I've ever used. I was kind of winging it, so I don't draw up any plans. Here are some basic dimensions that can get you started, nothing is too critical other than having the chute end above the bucket. The frame is made from 1.25” square tubing Top is 27.5 W x 25” D, measured on the outside The lower tier is 25” below the upper tier and sits directly on casters.

It’s better than nothing and I’d do it again, but it’s not 100% effective and some still ends up on the floor. The biggest problem that remains is chips coming out the end of tubing.
