I try to do videos of stuff that people normally don't see or experience on a day to day basis, so here's one that I'm sure most people don't even know exists or have never bothered to wonder how it's done. It's the Chip Truck Hydraulic Dumper at Resolute Forest Products in Thunder Bay Ontario. It lifts the whole transport up to a steep angle and dumps the chips out the back into a bin and onto the conveyor system that moves the chips to the piles you see at the Paper Mill. The chips are made by chipping trees that have been cut down in the forest. The logs are put into a chipper which dumps the chips into the top of the Trailer and then brought to the Mill. You can also see the old dumper in the background on the left which only does the trailer portion of the transport. Interesting to some, maybe boring to others!

Hey Rob, I'm very sorry if it seems like I'm over-commenting again on your channel, but my late father worked at Resolute/Bowater and all the other ownership changes over the years, since the original Great Lakes Forest Products started on that same site way back in 1919. He was employed there from 1966 to 1997, 31 years of service, and I still miss him five plus years after his passing. I don't mind these types of videos either because they do still educate, no one person knows everything, I stand by that, and all of us can indeed still learn something new daily, take care buddy and bye for now from "Port Arthur". P.S. As I've mentioned to you before, he started out at the mill in Marathon way way way back when, and you've said you worked in Marathon as well for various businesses there, including the former mill. P.P.S. As I'm sure you know, the same mill here in town is now known as Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper, have a wonderful weekend.

Has a different bumper on the trailer than a standard DOT found on most trailers. There's a barrier the driver backs up to till the trailer is pressed tight against it. Low enough so the trailer door can swing open.

There was one in Grande Prairie like that which had two dumps, a short one and a long one. For A Trains. You drove over the first one and left the pup then continued on to the next one for the rest of the rig and dumped both at once then backed up to get your pup.
@RobFarrowATV
@RobFarrowATV 5 жыл бұрын
There is a shorter one near this one...an older one that they uncoupled the unit to dump. They might still use that one, not sure.
@Bear39224
@Bear39224 5 жыл бұрын
In Crofton B. C. they had double dumps, because the two main chip haulers, in the mid 60s used truck and pup. You backed the pup onto one dump and then backed the truck onto the twin dump beside it and they both went up at the same time.

There is nothing at all, except the barrier that is raised behind the trailer. The air is let out of the suspension and the the whole weight of the truck and trailer are supported by what we call the backstop. If the suspension bounces when the load moves, then the truck might start to jackknife, until it is caught by the yellow steel hoops. We can also dump B-Train trailer combinations on all of our dumpers except the old one shown in the left background.

Paul Phillips ive actually never dropped my air bags while being dumped. Never been told to. The barrier is what keeps it from going anywhere in my opinion.

Frito lay potato chip factories use one of these to unload potatoes from the back of semi's. When the potatoes are old, sometimes they stick inside the trailer, then it is a real problem getting them out.

At this mill, the loads will freeze in during the winter. The friction of chipping the wood makes it very hot, and then the load may come 6 hours down the road before it even gets to the mill.

It has a big butt stop in the back that holds you in place but other than that you have to set your parking brakes There are some Mills that the ramps are too short and you have to disconnect from the trailer and they will have you changing the front of the trailer down But other than that it's far in the back breaks and dump

Rob Farrow ATV they are not strapped down. As a matter of fact I’m getting ready to get dumped right now at the local port lol. We back up until the trailer bumps the bar/wall that’s back there and then we lock our trailer/tractor breaks down along with shutting the motor off because it will starve the motor of oil. As long as you are up against something back there the truck won’t go anywhere it’s not that bad. I can’t imagine setting in one while it’s being dumped though. The fun part is backing on the ones that have a pretty steep incline off the ground with no room for error, at the port I’m at now the walls around the entrance to the dumper are cut up and gouged bad from people tearing their lug nuts off trying to steer the trailer.

This dumper can unload 4 to 5 trucks an hour, the old dumpers can only unload 3. Unhooking the trailers gets really time consuming when the legs are covered in frozen road slush and mud.
