I'm glad that you did a video on the different waxes and the different ways to distress the milk paint. I don't like to use my orbital sander on milk paint; just my sanding sponge or sandpaper. I haven't thought about the wet distress but glad to find out about that too. I want to try the white wax too before using the clear. Most of the time I use a liquid sealer and have found out that it does tend to make the milk paint chip more that I really like. I have the perfect piece I'm fixing to start on that will look GREAT this way. Can't wait to get started. Thanks for all of your and Zeb's great videos !!

Thank you, Jami that was a very informative video. I like to go back and watch these again and take notes (I have a notebook just for the purpose of chalk paint/milk paint/DIY paint) so I can reference techniques as I go. I love the table. Again thanks for sharing all the great techniques and ways to use DIY and milk paint. You mentioned doing a white wash type video I will be interested in that. I don't like using wax (I may try DIY wax it looks less like a thick paste than all that I have tried) so doing a white wash (or even a black wash) interests me.

I painted an antique round side table. The very common one with the spindle with 3 legs at the bottom with metal claws, do you know the one I mean? It had never been painted or refinished. It's a family piece. Anyway, I painted it all in a cashew color chalk paint 15 mins ago. 🙁☹ I decided to look for a layering tutorial because I don't like it. THEN I REMEMBERED I HAD (YOUR) MILK PAINT! I'd planned on using it because unknowingly, I used my other bag on raw wood (newly constructed piece)and didn't know it wouldn't chip what happens if I paint over the chalk paint if I super distress and get a lot of the chalk paint off?

Years ago when I still lived in Vt, I did a standing cupboard. It was already old, but I hated the color..I painted it barn red, then painted a layer of millk paint that I made from scratch in a color I love that I call Depression Green. When it dried I just sanded it by hand so the red came through in places. It was beautiful. If you wanted to, you could start out with a mustard yellow as a first coat, then red, then green-- all old colors. It would look great.

I’m a little confused. If I don’t want chippy but want a little distressed from my understanding you don’t want to start with a shiny piece and when you add milk paint you add the bonder? But what is the different between the diy and the milk paint? Is it best to use the diy then milk on top so when I wet sand/sand the chalk paint distresses easier?
@ras85345 жыл бұрын

I ordered and received more paint and am ready to finish up this project. My question is: the first thin coat chipped in quite a few places. Do I wipe off all the chipping before I paint the second coat? Note I did put a splash of extra bond in the first coat!

What is the difference between seal wax protection and polycrylic protection and what is better for acrylic paint seal can I use valspar stain after polycrylic seal pls let me know it’s my first diy
@JamiRayVintage5 жыл бұрын
Wax is a great sealer that can be applied with multiple coats and buffed to a matte sheen or buffed more for a higher glossier look. Times when I prefer to use liquid top coat like DIY paints Big Top is on table tops or heavy use items like a nightstand or end table that will have things set on it a lot. (We do 4-5 coats of Big Top on dining tables.) I would do all of your finish (paint or stain) before sealing the piece. Hope that helps! jamirayvintage.com/search?q=Top+coat+

hey guys quick question why wax instead of shellac like other projects? On before I forget what about using Rustoleum spray paints on metal instead of a normal paint?
@JamiRayVintage5 жыл бұрын
You could use the chalk paints we use on metals. Rustoleum does work pretty well on metal though. We waxed instead of using a liquid top coat because it was really chippy and a liquid top coat can reactivate the paint and cause more chipping.

Hang on so the top coat was left to cure to form a barrier but the wet cloth alone was enough to take it off and see the original color under the black?? Also how long did you wait for the blue layer to dry before doing the second coat and before doing the white color And how often do you have to rewax your furniture
@JamiRayVintage5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Big Top can take several days to fully cure and we just wanted to create a little resist so we painted the milk paint on once the Big Top was dry to the touch, but it was far from cured so with a little elbow grease it can still be wiped back. We gave the milk paint a couple hours to dry and then did the second coat. Once wax is cured he’d you don’t typically have to wax again. If it’s a high use piece of furniture some people will go back and touch it up every now and then with more wax but I never do and haven’t had an issue.

Gorgeous piece!!! How would you seal a piece if you like the look the brushstrokes gives it? Would you still use the white and clear wax and just skip the buffing step?
@JamiRayVintage6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it will eventually dry and harden. If you don’t buff it takes longer to fully cure because it’s thick. Maybe do a light buff after a couple days

I'm a newbie. I bought a vintage coffee table. Color is dark brown. If the dark brown is the color I want to show thru the chipping, do I need to do anything before applying the milk paint? It appears to be stained wood with some sort of glossy sealer. Thanks in advance!
@JamiRayVintage5 жыл бұрын
You can leave it as is and paint if the color is right. If it’s really glossy I would scuff up the surface with some sand paper. Not a lot of sanding, 5-10 minutes should do it. That’ll help the paint adhere so it doesn’t all chip off.

so if I have a dark wood dresser, that is already painted and sealed (from a store) does that mean I could just add the Milk Paint on top and then distress it back to the dark wood? without any intermediate steps?
@JamiRayVintage6 жыл бұрын
Yes it should work great! Milk paint chips more based off resistance. Shiny/slick surfaces = most resistance Dull/coarse surfaces = least resistance. The shinier the piece, the more it will chip. One thing to keep in mind, if it’s too shiny it may all chip off so a light buff with 220 grit sand paper, just enough to take a little shine off, might be in order.
@SakuraAtlas6 жыл бұрын
Jami Ray Vintage awesome! Thank you so much ❤️ your videos are super inspiring. Also, it is the same if I use chalk paint?
@JamiRayVintage6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. The chalk paint won’t naturally chip like the milk paint so you’ll have to distress it with a piece of sand paper or a damp cloth. The damp cloth works best if you’re wanting to reveal the color underneath without removing the base color.

Zeb has cut round tables in half that were missing legs and then we’ve found other legs from tables that had bad tops and married them together.

I don’t think I filmed these ones. They were done before we filmed very many things. We have this video on chair repair and painting chairs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH7bl6dohKmjoas

Two coats and some touch up here and there. I wait until it’s dry to wet distress.
