CHiPS - Drunk runs from Ponch and John

A guy who had a couple drinks decides to drive home and causes a horrible accident! Be careful when you rear end someone cuz you might just jump rather than smash!

The drunk drivers vehicle is a '73 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, the red car that has to avoid the Caddy is a 1972 Plymouth Fury, the car at the gas station is a 1974 Plymouth Fury, while the other white car that has to avoid the Caddy is a '73 Chrysler Newport, aventually, at the crash, there's a '69 Pontiac GTO, this GTO is used from season 3 onwards as a ramp for car crashes. The cars that flip over the GTO are a '73 Oldsmobile Delta 88, and a '69 Imperial, the brown car is a '70 Mercury Monterey.

Watching CHIPS always taught me valuable lessons like not to fly a kite or radio controlled airplane near traffic because you could 'cause a 5 car pile up! Also, don't ride you skateboard down a hill either!

the location for this scene is at the end of Los Angeles int airport west of the 2 runways towards the beach. There was a neighborhood there but was razed later, now fenced off completely.

@@socalltd A lot of the freeway scenes were filmed on the 210 in Sylmar because the Freeway was closed for many years after the 1971 Earthquake. I grew up in Sylmar.

@@JENDALL714 That is true. I know the 210 was built is phases form 1968 to 1981. The 5/210 stub was damaged but was repaired by 1974. the 118 was up by 1976 and later connected by 1982. The 210/118 interchange was there but the 210 was not finished to La Canada till then this gave the show a real "set" to film on. .

It was...a '69 GTO. They kept it around for a fairly long run, and it became known as the CHiPs "Ramp Car". Every time that GTO appeared on the screen, you knew something was going to either flip or go airborne. Sometimes they did a better job hiding the ramps than others. And sometimes it got repainted, as I've seen it in a darker green and a lighter green...unless they subjected two different '69 GTOs to this kind of abuse?

This was a rare episode with a sad ending. The wife gets killed by his driving in the end. There was another episode where Ponch's fiancee gets killed by a drunk driver, and another one where an aging CHiP dies from shrapnel wounds in an explosion.

Did anyone else see that sky blue colour car? That's a 1977/78 Pontiac Firebird Esprit with the 'Skybird' special appearance package on it. Quite a rare and beautiful car. It appears as a prop car through out seasons 2 & 3 of CHiP's. You can see it at 0:46, 0:52, 1:12, 1:15 and 1:24. There may be other points where you can see it but I'm too tired to look properly now.

Sad part was the ending: the girl would die and that guy had to go to jail thinking about what he did. It also taught the cheerleaders a sobering lesson too that witnessed the accident and death of the man's girlfriend.

Every time I see this episode I get so mad.It has a tragic ending, WHY?? Because the lady is CRAZY enough to get in the car with an out of control intoxicated person. She never even bothers to wear a seat belt !!! Did they not have them in those days????

Agreed, she covered for him by switching seats before Ponch and Jon could get eyes on the car. It seemed they had a history with the guy. Then, in the end, she dies because he got drunk and drove.
