My favorite thing is that sometimes, you find out just how dedicated the producer's and actors of this show were. They shot most of the show out on the actual highways, had a bunch of stunt actors. Sometimes, Wilcox and Estrada actually did the bike riding themselves. In some episodes Ponch has road rash on his arms. In season 3, I think it was during filming, Estrada was in a real accident, and he shot the scenes from the hospital bed. They sure took a lot of time and effort. Love this show.

The bikes were tied on the left front forks. Both bikes turn hard left once they "get to the end of their rope". That ejects P & J over the right side of the bike clear of the handlebars. Both bikes instantly do 180s and stop sliding. Still an awesome stunt for the 80s. Just my opinion.....

There's been some debate in the comments below about whether or not those were real live stunt men that flew off the two motorcycles or if they were mannequins/dummies used. Well, I am actually friends with Larry Wilcox, the actor that played Jon Baker on the show, and I asked him about this specific scene and he put to rest the debates and proved what I thought all along, that they were indeed real stunt men that did those stunts. Here's his response when I asked him if mannequins/dummies were used during this scene: "No we used Stuntmen in those days and they did hellacious stunts. I was telling my wife about one when we hit a pedestrian once head on and flipped him so hi that he came down and I thought he broke his neck. Rung his bell for sure but they were in the bar drinking that night. Amazing crap they did."

It's nice to know that they just got up and walked away from that explosion I just watched this same episode today, and after they got blown off their bikes they edited it right to John & Ponch dancing in a club later, and delivering a baby on the dance floor, gotta love when they have to chop episodes to make sure there's enough commercials shown. People need to remember that back in the 70s and 80s there was a federal law that TV had to be family friendly from 7pm to 9pm, so they had to be light and entertaining and safe for small kids to watch. So no gritty or overly tense stuff. Also, TV had only a fraction of the budget that they use today.

I've played this scene over and over since I've had VHS. These do not look like dummies. Awesome stunt! This show had the best car crashes ever. For another awesome bike crash where I always wondered if the rider was a dummy, look at the original THX1138 film when the robot cop crashes its bike and goes flying during the chase scene towards the end. That also was done by an actual stunt person.
@foskten108 жыл бұрын
+Agent Fungus I can clearly tell one of the two riders is in fact a mannequin. At 3:36 the rider on the left is a mannequin and you can better see this when it gets blown off the bike. Look at the way it lands on the pavement... this is indeed a mannequin but the other rider is a real person. If people can't see this then I don't know what to tell you. Real or mannequin, it still looks fantastic and was the best show ever.

@Emax411 No they had something of screen behind them tied to the left front forks of each bike to make them pull to one side and snatch right from under them. You can clearly see the bikes sliding backwards because they are tied to something stationary. So they just drove the bikes forward, having the length of cable and the speed they were to ride all tied in to time perfectly with the explosion. Still it is one hell of a stunt to have a bike yanked from under you on purpose.
